Publisher's Summary

A novel of explosive family secrets, regret, and all the little decisions that shape our lives and make us who we are.

At the age of thirty-nine, Alice Chang suddenly finds herself living in the last place she expected: her mother’s house. But in the face of divorce, eviction, and the recent death of her father, she doesn’t have a choice.

Watching as her mother thrives in a new job and meets younger men at the local gym, Alice struggles, reflecting on her parents’ marriage, her relationship with each of them, as she adjusts to being single again for the first time in twenty years. Then she finds her father’s old journal…and uncovers a shocking family secret that forces her to question everything she thought she knew about love, regret, family, and her own path forward.

As Alice comes to terms with the man her father really was, she must finally decide who she wants to be and what it will take to get there.

“Narrators Jackie Chung and Keong Sim create an inviting listening experience of a relatable story centered on family secrets and the rippling effects of choices.... The characters' interactions, ranging from comical to heartwarming to contentious, are brought to life with genuine emotion that draws the listener in.... The two narrations complement each other in tone and intensity, creating vivid, lingering characters.” (AudioFile Magazine)

A story of a life

Each decision we make so involves each of the people we spend our lives with whether they know what we do or don't do. To live with desires unfulfilled will affect not just us but the people around us.
Excellent story narrated beautifully. Thank you Ms Kim for an enjoyable and compelling story.

Good storu, compelling characters

I felt pulled in by the characters and the story flowed beautifully. I did think the ending was a little abrupt, wanted to know more about what happens with Alice, Derrick and their baby.

Enjoyable

A widow with a daughter going through a divorce. Online dating. Racism. Hypocrisy. Injustice. Lies and fifty year old secrets come to light. An excellent story.

Abrupt ending to a unique story

This was actually a good story and I enjoyed it very much. It had a very unique storyline. The story contained much detail so I was surprised at the abrupt ending. The narrators were very good. Overall a good listen and I finished it quickly. It was nice to listen to something different.

unique and interesting plot, but abrupt ending

I liked the plot and reading in general, but it ended very abruptly, almost in mid thought.

interesting twists

The 2 narrators mad it easy to know which character was speaking. I like learning a bit about how the Korean War affected the psychological personality of those who born in Korea and immigrated to California in the 1960s, early 1970s. I worked with 2 male Korean doctors in the mid seventies. I wish that I had this insight then.

Excellent!

Heartfelt and well done! It is a love story on so many different levels. Filled with insight. Very well developed characters, many of them, if not all of them deserving of our compassion.

Narration was quite well done. I loved listening to the authentic Korean accents, in particular the mom who, indeed, was quite a character!! I highly recommend this, especially as a great offering included with the Kindle Unlimited subscription….go ahead, try it!! ☺️

Slow start

I almost gave up. The reader took some getting used to. Eventually, I got used to her style. She can do accents well. Same with the other reader. The story is interesting.
