Publisher's Summary
She lifted up her granddaughter from the cot, clutched her to her chest, and without looking at her beautiful daughter lying dead on the floor of her bedroom, ran from the house. Only when she was outside did she let a wail escape her lips, frightening the baby who joined in her screams.
When Isabel Gallagher is found murdered on the floor of her baby’s nursery by her mother, it’s a grueling case for Detective Lottie Parker. Isabel’s pajamas have been ripped, her throat cut and an old-fashioned razor blade placed in her hand. As Lottie looks at the round blue eyes and perfect chubby cheeks of Isabel’s baby daughter, she can’t understand who would want to hurt this innocent family.
That very same day she receives a call with devastating news. Another young mother, Joyce Breslin, has gone missing, and her four-year-old son, Evan, has been abducted from daycare. Lottie is sure that the missing mother and son are linked to Isabel’s death, and when she finds a bloody razor blade in their house, her worst fears are confirmed.
Desperate to find little Evan, Lottie leaves no stone unturned as she delves into Isabel and Joyce’s pasts, and when she realizes the two women have been meeting in secret, she knows she must find out why.
But when Joyce’s body is found in a murky pond and some little bones are found on a windy hillside, it feels as if this merciless killer will stop at nothing. The bones aren’t Evan’s, but can they give Lottie the final clue to find the innocent child before more lives are taken?
This absolutely gripping crime thriller from best-selling author Patricia Gibney will leave you gasping for breath.

Another great Lottie Parker book
I enjoy this series. This, the tenth in the series, has a lot of moving parts and potential suspects. There is sadness and worry for a young child missing since his mother was murdered in front of him. (Not a spoiler; it’s in the publisher’s blurb.) Lottie and her team are under pressure, as always, to solve this murder and kidnapping while other crimes come to light.
This was hard to put down. The narration was enjoyable. The only negative is that now we readers have to wait for the next Book.

Diverting
I've listened to the whole series now and this had the same issues as the others:
1.) The narrator sometimes forgets whose voice she is doing and doesn't switch appropriately.
2.) The characters stand and debate forever before making a move. It feels a bit like filler and my mind inevitably wanders off waiting for them to get on with it already.
3.) Lottie Parker is selfish, thoughtless, too reactionary, and hard to root for. She constantly overtalks people, ignores her team's (and kids) calls as a rule, and then is SHOCKED when she misses things. You don't really ever see her go to bat for anyone on her team so it isn't a surprise that any of them plot against her. She is quick to suspect her love interest of cheating on her as her first conclusion any time his attention is diverted from her for a second, so it is hard to believe she actually has deep feelings and trust. If she showed a little more personal development, it might be easier to root for her or to empathize with her astonishment when nobody confides in her. The stories are interesting in spite of her luckily.
Aside from that, it is a decent story. If the filler was toned down a bit, it would have gotten 4 stars. The author has taken some time to weave an interesting web of relationships so it isn't easy to guess whodunnit or what motivated them to act.

I want to go for a beer with Lottie Parker. I want her to tell me her troubles and put her feet up and have a rest. The woman has been through so much! And yet, she's the rock around which the stories are written and the characters are built. Great read, interesting people, very well read. If you like detectives with problems, emotions and the ability to sniff out trouble, then give Lottie Parker ago.
