Publisher's Summary
Some places make their own laws....
When Ella Watson, a woman of wealth and status, is brutally stabbed to death in broad daylight, it sends a shockwave through the Lake District community. Later that day, Keira Bradley meets the same fate. But whereas Ella’s murder is a tragedy, Keira’s death on the notorious Beacon Estate is just another statistic in a dangerous place.
DI Kelly Porter has the unenviable job of running simultaneous investigations. Her efforts aren’t helped by a boss driven by protecting his reputation and a housing estate where fear rules and no one dare speak out. Kelly knows the answers can only be found by winning the trust of the residents at Beacon Estate. A task so hard it may be impossible.
Kelly puts everything she has into finding justice for both victims. The only thing she hadn’t anticipated was a traitor in the ranks. When the evidence points to someone in her team, Kelly has to put feelings aside and work the case – no matter where it leads. By the time it is over, nothing in her world will ever be the same....
A dark and gripping police procedural for fans of Patricia Gibney and D. S. Hood.

Mixed messages
Another great Kelly Porter story! This book tells the story of two murders - one, a rich white woman, and one, a poor biracial woman - which are committed nearby and in a troubled, crime-ridden estate. The theme is social injustice. As you can imagine, one murder is viewed as significantly more "important" than the other. Add a dirty, high-ranking cop and a couple questionable lower-level officers and things get interesting. My one complaint about this book is quite specific, and I was warned of it by an Amazon reviewer. Kelly is smart, kind, and cares about her family, friends, and community. When her boyfriend Johnny's daughter comments that she thinks Donald Trump is "hilarious" and no one challenged her, it made me want to vomit. It goes against the entire well-intentioned message of the story. I hope that Ms. Lynch understands that Trump is not "hilarious". If a Trumpian character appeared in one of her novels about social injustice, he would be the villain. Frankly, in any story, he would be the villain. Don't bring American politics into a book unless you understand how incredibly polarizing the content is. Obviously, Ms. Lynch doesn't get it, or Josie would have been, at the least, debated. Politics aside, the book was quite good, and, as always, Clare Kissane reads beautifully.

The language and it dragged
I am so sick of unnecessary excessive swearing--F... this F... that, Sh... this Sh... that. I can maybe see it happening when something extraordinary happens, but not in normal conversation. It's so lame. Why do these authors think this is cool? It ruins the whole story. And it drags. Concentrate on words for the storyline and not the swear words-- maybe it will go somewhere. I could not finish it.

very hard time getting through this one
I can usually rip through a Rachel Lynch book in the matter of a few days... however, this one took me a few weeks... I kept having to replay and rewind due to my mind wondering off due to it not drawing me in. Not much mystery or may I say it, gore, as there usually is. I will say, she must've 'took my notes' from the last books though when I thought Kelly wasn't a 'real person' because she's perfect in everyway, she never gets into trouble in work or personal life, and everyone around her is perfect - making it very 1-dimensional. I guess this book works to rectify that, but still... that rainbow ending... come on... leave me wanting more. I will continue to read the series... but I hope it gets better and not worse. Best books by far: book 2 & 5.
