Story
For Kate Klein, suburbia's been full of unpleasant surprises. Her once-loving husband is hardly ever home. The supermommies on the playground routinely snub her. Her days are spent carpooling, and at night, most of her orgasms are of the do-it-yourself variety. So when a fellow mother is murdered, Kate finds that the unsolved mystery is one of the most interesting things to happen in Upchurch. She launches an unofficial investigation with the help of two friends and discovers the secrets and lies behind the town's placid picket-fence facade....

Now Cannie's back. After her debut novel - a fictionalized (and highly sexualized) version of her life - became an overnight bestseller, she dropped out of the public eye and turned to writing science fiction under a pseudonym. She's happily married and has settled into a life that's wonderfully predictable. As preparations for her daughter Joy's bat mitzvah begin, everything seems right in Cannie's world. Then Joy discovers the novel Cannie wrote years before and suddenly finds herself faced with what she thinks is the truth about her own conception - the story her mother hid.

No matter what was happening in Jennifer Weiner's life - whether good, bad, or very, very ugly - her mother, Fran, would say the same thing: It's all material. Now the number-one New York Times best-selling author and "one of the biggest names in popular fiction" ( USA Today), beloved on Twitter and hailed as "an unlikely feminist enforcer" ( The New Yorker), takes the raw stuff of her personal life and spins it into a collection of personal essays as uproariously funny and heartfelt as the best of Tina Fey and Nora Ephron.

Publisher's Summary
Four very different women navigate one of life's most wonderful and perilous transitions: the journey of new motherhood.
Rebecca Rothstein Rabinowitz is a plump, sexy chef who has a wonderful husband, a restaurant that's received citywide acclaim, a beautiful baby girl and the mother-in-law from hell. Kelly Day's life looks picture-perfect. But behind the doors, she's struggling to balance work, motherhood and marriage, while dealing with an unemployed husband who seems content to channel-surf for eight hours a day. Ayinde Towne's already on shaky ground, when her basketball superstar husband breaks her trust at the most vulnerable moment in her life, putting their marriage in peril -- and thrusting their new family further into the public eye. Then there's Lia Frederick, a Philadelphia native who has left Los Angeles behind, along with her glamorous Hollywood career, her husband, and a tragic secret.
With her trademark warmth and humor, Weiner tells the story of what happens after happily ever after.

for everyone who's ever been a mother
if you are, or have ever been a mother, if you're pregnant, or even thinking about having a baby, you will be able to relate to the characters and situations in this book. Even though much of it is cliched, the story is so heartwarming and humorous it just grabbed me!
I'm in my 50's, so it's been quite a while since I went through what the 4 women in this story are dealing with, but this brought all the memories back to me in color.
But more than entertainment, there is a lot of subtle wisdom imparted here. I smiled and winced as the characters messed up their lives and their relationships. The author manages to create sympathy not only for her 4 female protagonists, but also for their partners and families. There were times I saw myself or someone I knew, and in the meddling mother-in-law, someone I don't want to be now that I have grandchildren.
A thoroughly enjoyable read!

Driving Happily and Entertained
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes - entertaining and smart about relationships.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Kelly - she tried so hard to cover up any sadness or badness.
Which character – as performed by Johanna Parker – was your favorite?
All were great. She did wonderfully with the men without making her voice sound strange.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I couldn't wait to keep listening - it was for the road while I drove my friend's moving truck across country. I kept thinking about the things friends do for each other. I laughed a couple of times about Becky's reactions to things.
Any additional comments?
Loved the narrator and the book. I wish all were this awesome. I didn't think the subject matter was for me but I trust this author to be good. I am oldish and childless so pregnancy and newborns is a little outside my experience but that wasn't really the main subject but part of the conflict for the characters.

Audible I love
Jennifer Weiner is my favorite author. I've read almost all of her books but there is a nothing like listening to on her. The wat she gives characters their own story line and they intertwine with each.. It really makes you feel like she has plucked the stories from you. That every character has a piece of you in them. Every parent with a newborn has these moments.
Loved it, definitely recommend to family and friends!

Heartwarming tales of Motherhood & Friendship
Would you try another book written by Jennifer Weiner or narrated by Johanna Parker?
May be
What was one of the most memorable moments of Little Earthquakes?
Rebecca Rabinowitz's face-to-face address to her mother-in-law following her mother-in-law's decision to cut off her son and have nothing to do with him and Rebecca following the "Christmas" saga. Not many people would have chosen to act with such humility. I really expected a show down, expected that with the support of her husband, Rebecca would have put her mother-in-law in her place with some harsh words/truth. Instead she showed such humility and maturity, I could see why her husband was so in love with her.
Did Johanna Parker do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
Yes. The characters had very distinctive qualities and life stories allowing the author to cover a wider range of challenges faced by women and particularly new mothers. It helped that the characters were strangers, unknown personally to each at the beginning of the book/story.
Could you see Little Earthquakes being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
Yes, a movie or a tv mini-series. Katherine Heigl as Kelly Day and Alex Pettyfer or Kellan Lutz as her husband; Sanaa Lathan as Ayinde Towne and Rick Fox as her husband; Seth Rogen as Dr Rabonowitz, Camryn Manheim or Marissa Jaret Winokur as Rebecca; and Marla Sokoloff as Lia Frederick
Any additional comments?
This is a good book, the story is somewhat predictable but realistic and empowering.
