Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

Story
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce - and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight, to defend Earth and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Publisher's Summary
Beginning a New Series by a New York Times Best-Selling Author. Will the People of Earth Bow Down toAlien Overlords—or Will They Live Free or Die?
First Contact Was Friendly
When aliens trundled a gate to other worlds into the solar system, the world reacted with awe, hope and fear. But the first aliens to come through, the Glatun, were peaceful traders and the world breathed a sigh of relief.
Who Controls the Orbitals, Controls the WorldWhen the Horvath came through, they announced their ownership by dropping rocks on three cities and gutting them. Since then, they've held Terra as their own personal fiefdom. With their control of the orbitals, there's no way to win and earth's governments have accepted the status quo.
Live Free or Die
To free the world from the grip of the Horvath is going to take an unlikely hero. A hero unwilling to back down to alien or human governments, unwilling to live in slavery and with enough hubris, if not stature, to think he can win. Fortunately, there's Tyler Vernon. And he has bigger plans than just getting rid of the Horvath.
Troy Rising is a book in three parts—Live Free or Die being the first part—detailing the freeing of earth from alien conquerors, the first steps into space using off-world technologies and the creation of Troy, a thousand trillion ton battlestation designed to secure the solar system.

A touch of hitchhiker guide to the galaxy
Don't think twice in getting this. It has a original beginning and i am 60% through it and it feels complete. The writer takes the innocences of the human race and ads the confusion of an alien world and how one man outwits them. The narrator has a great way of reading this that makes it almost comical and special at the same time. For me to make effort to write a comment here takes real effort and guts and this book has both. It almost reminds me of the innocense and sense of norm 'Hitchhiker to the galaxy' brought to something that would make us paranoid and confused in real life. This is a good listen if you like sci-fi and space stories.

John Ringo is in my top 5
Very well told story. My favorite aspect of John Ringo's style is his witty dialogue, not only is the story meaningfully progressed but nearly every conversation is intriguing, except for the technical explanations. I appreciated the explanations but I got lost in some of them.
If you like John Scalzi, you will definitely like John Ringo.
The narrator is phenomenal as well. You can tell within about ten seconds if a narrator is good and this guy is well above par.

Nice Technical SF
First off the performer does a really good job and the book is solid as well, especially if you enjoy technical SF. First Ringo book and i will check out more of his work.
Now for the part that everyone keeps harping on, yes the main character that has right leaning views and it is brought up in the book. So What, it's part of the process of getting to know a character.
The only complaint i have about the books is at the end of it i really don't know anything about the other characters. I mean i know a little bit about others but I don't feel as if i know them. The exception might be the AI's, he did a good job with them.

Captivating
This is such an awesome story! I thought I'd give it a try, since I was not familiar with the author. Half way through listening to book 1, I bought books 2 and 3, and I don't want to go to work - I just want to finish listening!
I'll certainly be checking out John's other books. He has a great way of blending action, characters, and plot. Also, I love the references to BSG and Star Wars - Frakkin cool.

All of the action you would ever want!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This version of the hostile alien contact genre is more enjoyable for me than most others.
The bad aliens are really bad. The allied aliens are as complex as humans. The heroes are heroic. Even those who don't start out as heroic rise to the occasion. I love this series and wish John Ringo would write some more sequels.
What other book might you compare Live Free or Die to and why?
The Posleen war series is comparable in action and drama, but more from the ground-pounder point of view, rather than the space jockey as this series is.
Unlike David Weber, who takes a lot of time to build the political and religious infrastructure to support his action heroes, Ringo just gets on with the mission.
What does Mark Boyett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Mark Boyett's narration is first rate. He really brings the action alive and his characterizations work to keep the people straight in your mind's eye.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book and the others in the series kept me from sleeping or doing any useful work.
Any additional comments?
Mr. Ringo, please follow up with another episode or twelve.

Classic Sci-Fi, Heinlein style
This book reads like it's from the golden age of sci, aliens vs humans with cold war style politics. It's very much in the style of Robert Heinlein, a very technical writing style with a lot of explaination of the physics of what's going on. It seems like it should be tedious with so much technical writing, but in Ringo's skilled hands, the story just flows.
The main charactrer, Tyler Vernon, reminded me of Heinlein's Lazarus Long. The same cranky angry attitude and drive to suceeed completely. The narrator captured the feel of the book perfectly.
Other reviewers talk about latent racism/sexism, but it's far tamer in that regard than the sci-fi classics that clearly inspired this book.

One of the best sci-fi books of a generation
Excellent narration, and one of the most compelling sci fi stories I have ever read. This is Heinlein level sci fi, and my third listen to this series. John's other series are more fun if you want a good laugh, but this series brings to life a world you can imagine being real. One series that goes in my top ten list!

A very fun daydream.
Would you listen to Live Free or Die again? Why?
Perhaps, to get the science parts better and all those very many abbreviations.
What did you like best about this story?
The concept, the idea of the solution on how to "fix" the "problem" at hand.
Which scene was your favorite?
no favorate, I like many of the ideas and concepts.I dont like the gene/medical attack ideas and scenes.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, not that kind of a book in my opinion.
Any additional comments?
The writer is either from the south or loves the south. He is a die hard right wing republican. If you, the reader are one the left side of politics or PC, "this read might hurt your feelings"...I am how ever on the right, I love it! :) I don't like some of those gene/medical ideas, they are just silly and show the writers preference rather than something an attacking alien force would do.

If you could sum up Live Free or Die in three words, what would they be?

What did you like best about this story?
Its possibilities
Which scene was your favorite?
Maple Syrup War
Any additional comments?
Wished the author would allow the flow of the speakers to move a littler better. Hearing the reader every 5 seconds saying " he/she said " gets pretty distracting and grating but the story does a good job to keep you going.

Predictable but fun
This title has received criticism of being right-wing propaganda...
Apparently, one can't even read a book anymore without politicising it.
I for one had fun with this and I'm not ashamed for it.
Yes, the story is a bit cheesy and predictable, the main character a hero who single-handedly saves Earth, but so what?
It's not like Hollywood has done any better lately. At least the characters in Live Free or Die have more depth to them.
If you're looking for something whimsical, surprising or deep, you'll be disappointed, but if you like the majority of SciFi movies, you will enjoy this.

Loved it!
A breakneck pace story of human ingenuity, overcoming the odds and not backing down. Giant space constructions/infrastructure building, science, super weapons, and space battles. Very enjoyable. Some moaning about it not being PC, and although there are a couple of wince moments it's really not significant. For instance, I read one review that said how every women is described as "stacked" so I listened out for it. Actually, it's only used twice, in the whole book. Could have been written better or more subtly, but not a big deal. And some see it as an attack on left wing, city dweller types, and well yes the main good guys are conservatives but again, it's not a big deal unless you make it so. So yes, I recommend this book to anyone who is not neurotic or easily "triggered".

Brilliant stuff
I love this book, I have listened to it twice now. The narrator is fantastic, his Vermont accents absolutely spot on and very funny. This is one of the most unusual sci-fi stories I've read and also the funniest. I don't like Russell's review of this book, I can't help thinking that he misunderstood some of the politics and humour. It is interesting and odd that Russell has also posted the exact same, word for word review on Amazon of the paper back book.
Don't be put off, this series is thoroughly entertaining and clever.

Got through 2/3 of the book before I couldn't take the super conservative rhetoric anymore. It's apparently on the KKK reading list, which after reading this last chapter is not surprising. Had to stop reading, such a shame.

it is like an american republican's wet dream...
if you are not an american, fox news-watching
republican odds are this is not for you. it started off interesting with a decent premise, but became more and more politicized so much so that it became unreadable. u live in a country with 'free' health care? are you muslim? do you live in Africa? do you live in a city? are you a libtard? well, then the world is better off without you, according to the protagonist. my favorite quote; 'Not even fox News were entirely impartial'. LOL

awesome but
Eveything was great. But shouldnt have included political commentary. Out of place. The tidbits of slacking off liberals and hailing conservatives. Thankfully there wasn't too much of it.
Other than that close to perfect book and one of the best narration performances ive heard.

HFY indeed
An old favourite. Humanity at it's best, as it responds to and recovers from alien invasion and control. John Ringo is a superb author, who makes characters of all races (terra-evolved and otherwise) seem as real as you or I. A fine logistical and strategic narrative, as well. Very well narrated.

Great
It's slightly hu-ya America or bust for a foreigners taste, but it's a really good yarn for anyone with a sci fi taste for space. Very funny too at times.

great military sci fi. Practical look at humanity in space and a great yarn. Certainly not fantasy rubbish.

Hokey ... maybe for kids?
I had my misgivings about this book from the comments posted about the politics that suffuse the narrative; but I'd hoped that it was part of the humour, something playful.
But I just couldn't settle. There was the "politics", but also that I just didn't care for any of the characters. In part I think this was down to the reading, which gave the narrative a hokey sound.
But then I heard "frack", "fracking" and "nimrod" and realised the book was probably more for the juvenile market. Frack and Fracking being silly alternatives to F**k, etc; and "nimrod" I think I first heard coming from the kid character in "Terminator 2". PG13?
The story concept really had some potential.
