The Narrator’s breathing is unbearable!!!

I can’t believe this was recently remastered. The Narrator taking a deep breath with each sentence was seriously making me feel claustrophobic. It was weird my own breathing felt off while listening. Maybe I’m really sensitive to it.

Horrible. I own nearly 100 audible books and this was the worst ever!!!

Could not listen

I could not listen to this book. The narrator breathing like a 90 year smoker with emphysema completely wrecked it.

Love the book, can't handle the narrator

I love this book, it's entertaining, wise, evocative, revisionist, and just beautifully written in general. I've already read it twice, but it's been a while and I thought it would be fun to listen to on the way to work and falling asleep. But I'm a picky listener, and I couldn't handle five minutes of Lee Horsley's narration. It's not so much his raspy voice as his audible breathing, almost gasping at some points. Can't do it. Returning. I hope someone else reads it someday. Nick Offerman would be great.

Lonesome Dove

Loved the story with all of its great characters. However, I would not recommend this audio version because the voice of Gus McCray was decimals higher than the other voices in the audible version and extremely irritating to listen to. I only made it through this book by keeping my finger on the control volume so I could turn it down when Gus spoke which was often. I would listen to a different version of this book if I were you. I understand that they were trying to create this character that did speak louder and was hard of hearing but when listening to an audible book they need to be more aware of there listening audience. I doubt that the people that created this set down and listened to all 33 hours. I rarely take the time to write a review but hope this would be helpful to someone else or to the creators of this audible version of lonesome dove. It could just be edited so the volume is not higher than the other characters of the book but keep the same gruffness and tone of Gus’s voice.

Narration and yelling: not the same thing.

I really wanted to read this book given its reputation. I made it to chapter 9 but the narrators yelling out every comment by Augustus made it simply too obnoxious. I just couldn’t take it any more 😕

Lee Horsley is perfect!

Nothing else I have read has brought to life the Old West like McMurtry's Lonesome Dove! I could practically taste the steak and beans cooked on the campfire. I could see the herds of buffalo. I could feel the sting of the dust on my face. I live in Colorado and all around me is the evidence of life in this era so the book made my home more intriguing.

Each character was unique, likable and very real. I liked the people McMurtry introduced to me well enough that I plan to look for the second book in the series very soon.

Lee Horsley is incredible in this book. His voices for the various characters are very distinct and really brought the book to life. I never struggled to know who was speaking. I was enchanted by both the book and the narration

Disappointed

I'm a huge fan of the mini-series and heard that the book had so much more that I liked. I could not, though, get used to the narrator's delivery, especially the heavy breaths between lines.

The narrator yells

The narrator yells loudly as Gus' voice.. even during soft scenes with Lori. It ruins a great story.

Great story but a horrible recording

It’s crazy that they would try to sell this for real money, it sounds terrible. It’s a great story but not delivered well here.

Brilliant but...

I nearly abandoned this book in favour of a print version. The narrator started off at such a gallop it was hard to follow. The volume needs pushing up because the whole book is a little quieter than usual. Except for Gus... anytime he speaks, he shouts. So it was uncomfortable trying to hear one minute and having my ears blown off the next. But I got into it and I'm glad I stuck with it. The narrator settled into a better pace and really brought the characters to life. Its a wonderful book and really paints a vivid picture of the gritty living and harsh realities of the first settlers and to an extent the native Indians. Enjoy!

Epic, beautifully written, perfectly performed!

I was worried that this book was about 38 hrs long, but I ended up wishing it were longer! Such a beautifully crafted novel, the characters and Wild West landscapes are superbly drawn. I feel as though I've been on the cattle drive, I'm exhausted, humbled and ready to settle down back in the comfort of the presence. The performance couldn't have brought it to life better.

Magnificent

Enough superlatives have been heaped on his book for me to add any more. Suffice to say that it richly deserves all the praise. I alternated between the audiobook and the Kindle version and this pairing worked well to get me through the great novel. Lee Horsley's narration was recorded in the early 90s and one can hear the tape hiss of the anologue recording but it is a minor thing and most listeners will probably be unaware of it. It doesn't detract from the listening experience in any way. This is one of the best books I've read and it comes with my highest recommendation.

Cracking

Having just finished the last in the Mantel trilogy I was looking for another epic but was doubtful about following Cromwell. This book turned out to be the perfect tonic
. A real giant of a story striding along the length of a time in American history that was short but somehow defined the Wild West.
My only criticism is the voice adopted by the reader to portray Gus, but the excellence of the overall performance outweighed this
If you're looking for a massive story well told, settle down and lose yourself in this book

It is clearly a great book just to slow for me,
I read as far as I could and just gave up on it. Sorry I know a lot of people love this book it's just my personal opinion

Best talking book I have heard

It is long, but for the first time ever I finished a talking book and went back to start all over again - and some of the chapters I had already played twice over anyway. I frequently found myself taking longer walks or sitting in the car after I'd arrived at my destination simply to hear more or to hear it again. If you have never read a Western, don't let that put you off as I hadn't either; just consider this a fabulous story, a work of historical fiction that happens to be set in the American West. I came to care deeply about many of the characters and am now going back to read the "prequel" books to find out more about them. Lonesome Dove is nothing less than a masterpiece, one I cannot believe I had never come across before. The reading could not be bettered. Have only bought 20+ audio books so far, but have heard many, many others over the years and this is the best.

Fantastic!

I read this book many years ago and had forgotten many of the finer details. I watch the series at least twice a year.

This telling gives full life to the characters - narrated with a fantastic touch it is really giving me a finer sense of the characters and how much I have grown to love the story.

Incredible!

Boring.

I hardly got through two chapters. It is so slow. Perhap it is hard for me because in Australia a cowboy is that. The old guy or kid who milks the cows, and does odd jobs around the homestead. We have stockmen and stockwomen, not boys and girls. This novel does not travel well. It is boringly slow-paced, with matchimg slow narration.

Simply epic

You wont find a better epic western, well read too. Took a full month to get through and it never felt slow or lacking, it does embrace quite a few characters in order to keep the story engaging.
