My world shattered on a cold April morning when they took my husband away in cuffs. The life I knew, the man I loved, and the world I believed in was nothing but a lie. He stole my trust, my happiness, and my faith in humanity, and I’m not sure how to move on. Story
Renowned psychiatrist Dr. Cyrus Irvine takes his job and his life very seriously. He is well-respected in his field and has worked hard to get where he is. But he’s lonely. When called in to evaluate a murder suspect, the last person he expects to find is the man he slept with a few months ago. The man who ghosted him and wounded his fragile heart. Ethically, he should turn around and walk away, but he doesn’t. For as much as Cyrus understands the human brain, he can’t understand the pull he feels toward the patient.

When it comes to hockey, I'm all about the game. I've worked for years to be one of the best in the league, and l've done it without splashing my orientation all over the tabloids. My hockey image is one I've carefully cultivated, and after one night with Ezra Palaszczuk, I risk it all. He's cocky, obnoxious, and has an ego bigger than Massachusetts. And okay, maybe he's the sexiest man I've ever known. We'll never get along. Not when we sleep together. Not even when my possessive streak awakens. That doesn't stop us from falling into bed together over and over again.

I spent college worrying about responsibilities and earning my teaching degree, so before graduation and moving to Atlanta with my best friend, Ross, I figure I deserve a little fun. I’ve never been with an older man, but the guy at the bar grabs my attention and doesn’t let go…for multiple rounds, all night long. The next day, when Ross introduces me to his dad, the last thing I expect is for him to be my hookup from the night before, in town from Atlanta for his son’s graduation. The best thing would be to pretend it never happened, which is easier said than done.

I’m a SEAL. Or rather, I was. Retired at the grand old age of 38, I’m at loose ends. My best friend wants me to join his security team. I’m not sure I’m bodyguard material, but he needs someone to protect his kid brother. How hard can spoiled brat duty be? Somehow, I missed the part where former child star Danny Love went from dorky TV darling to all grown up and disturbingly attractive. All the gossip about his wild ways fails to mention that he’s trying hard to clean up his act.

Publisher's Summary
It was love at first sight.
They were soul mates.
It was forever.
But they were only 16.
Too innocent. Too naïve.
Too ignorant about the world around them.
Besides, nothing lasts forever.
With their fairy-tale future torn to shreds, both boys need to learn to find their own way in an unforgiving world.
Gavin Buchanan is thrown into a life he didn’t want, molded to do a job he always feared. He must learn to get by, but with only his brothers in arms to lean on and secrets so deep they eat at his core every day, he struggles. How long until life in the Marine Corps turns this gentle, tenderhearted man into someone no one recognizes?
Owen Wallace is adrift and going through the motions. Every time he tries to stand tall and put the past behind him, life kicks him down. There is only so much a person can take before they turn bitter and jaded. It wasn’t supposed to be this way.
Their souls are bound to each other.
Nothing will keep them apart.
It will take time, but they just need to find their way home.
Trigger warning for PTSD.

Another Sleepless Night--Couldn't Stop Listening
I love books that create characters so real that they feel like old friends. That's the way I feel about Gavin and Owen. I literally listened to this book in one long sitting, all 11+ hours of it, rolling into bed at 3:45 a.m. this morning. What happens when a kid who has been loved and nurtured finds himself thrown away at age 17. Suddenly he finds himself with literally no connection to anyone in the world except the boy he loved in high school half the country away, and that connection is forbidden. The answer is heartrending. I am a straight 75-year-old grandmother, but I relate to individuals, whatever their sexual orientation. I loved this book. Don't let the sexual orientation of the main characters stop you from reading this book. There are some fairly explicit sex scenes, but the characters are so real, so engaging, that I couldn't help cheering for them. It's hard for me to believe that Nicky James never spent time as a soldier in Afghanistan. I highly recommend this book. My favorite Nicky James so far, and she's had several good ones.

An Emotional Journey!
Wow! This narration totally blew me away. Nick Russo is quickly becoming a favorite narrator for me. He and Nicky James make a great team. Nick was fantastic in telling this story. He brought all the passion, all the emotion, and all the feelings to this wonderful story! Gaven and Own’a story was such an emotional journey from young love to a hard-fought happily ever after! This was truly an epic romance that spanned years. From self discovery and teenage love, to tragic circumstances that caused them to be apart, to navigating adulthood and eventually finding their way back to one another, Nicky James writes one heck of a story. You will swoon, you will cry, you will get angry, and you will feel so much. This wasn't always an easy story, but it was powerful and written so very well with a very satisfying happily ever after for these men who deserved it so much!

Wow!!!!
This book should be made into a movie!!!!!! The story of Gavin and Owen draws you in from the start plus the added bonus is the narrator, Nick J. Russo, who brought these characters to life. Yes, the story is long but it's worth every minute and I found the time flying by. I will definitely listen to this story at least 2 more times. Bravo, Nicky James. Bravo, Nick J. Russo.

Another brilliant Nicky James book
I always rave about Nicky James books so I’ll start this review a little differently. Nicky uses a couple of great narrators, and Nick J. Russo is one of them. He delivers solid performances I always enjoy listening to. He made this book that much better.
Which means the book was amazing.
And broke my heart. And then mended it back together.
Young love is just that – young love. It rarely survives into adulthood because it’s based on the feelings and hormones of teenagers. Odds are always stacked against the young lovers. I wanted this book to be different. I wanted Owen and Gavin to make it. I knew they wouldn’t, but I hoped I was wrong.
I was not. The circumstances of the separation broke my heart. I knew they’d eventually wind up back together, but I wondered what they’d have to endure in the meantime.
Upon finishing high school, Owen heads off to college, dedicated to being a journalist.
Gavin joins the military and tries to hold on to his sanity.
Neither man does well. They make friends, only to later lose them. Their paths cross several times, but it’s never the right time. They continue on with their lives, but never thrive. They were meant to be together and until that happens, neither will reach fulfilment.
Now, this story starts back in the early 2000’s, meaning the military stuff takes place during DADT (Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell). Anything that holds people back from being their authentic selves is a bad thing. When it was repealed, many LGBTQ members of the military rejoiced. Didn’t end prejudice, but it did allow them to serve openly. Proudly.
Back to Owen and Gavin. Sometimes hard-won love means more and I sure celebrated when they finally got their happy ending. I did have my doubts, but this is a Nicky James romance, so I knew I’d be satisfied. As her writing is so eclectic, I have no idea where the next audiobook will take me. Can’t wait to find out.

Epic Narration!!!
THE WRITING:
OMG... this book.. it's everything!!!
Long Way Home follows the lives of soulmates, Gavin and Owen, over a span of 16 years.
As with all of Nicky James's book, Long Way Home takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. The journey that these two men take will leave your heart aching.
Gavin and Owen met in high school and thought they had their whole lives ahead of them. Little did they know that not everything last forever.
Long Way Home is a second chance romance and in true Nicky James style, she visits mental health.
This book is aptly titled as Gavin and Owen's journey back to each over, their home, isn't an easy one!
If you're looking for a book with true in depth character development, angst and ALL THE FEELS, then you will not regret Long Way Home.
Congratulation Mrs James on another amazing read!!!
THE NARRATION:
Nick J Russo has done it again!! He has brought another epic story by one of my favourite authors to life!! The emotions, the passion, the feels that he projects while narrating this story had my heartbreaking all over again!!
Nick J Russo has quickly become a favourite for me, and having teamed up with Nicky James, I could not be happier!!

Deep, emotional and intimate🌟
This is a deep and very emotional book narrated by Nick Russo, who manages to personalize each characters uniquely. It was a very intimate listening, and I found myself in tears walking along the beach and in the woods here in Denmark.
Gavin and Owen fell in love at sixteen, and the description of their first months in their relationship is really deep, intimate and sweet, yet tons of angst is looming in the horizon and spans over a period of 8 years, with a tearjerking HEA.
As any Nicky James story this is exceptionally written , her sharp on point writing and well chosen words turns to vivid scenery in my head.

Highly recommend!
Gavin and Owen meet in high school when Owen writes an article about Gavin's football playing in the school paper.
I loved hearing their relationship grow and strengthen into young love. It was really sweet and touching.
There were so many feels in this story. I really felt the joy, the love and especially the heartbreak and trauma that both Gavin and Owen wrnt through. In pure Nicky James style, she slowly cut out my heart with a blunt rusty knife before she slowly began to piece it together again.
The narration was perfection. Nick J. Russo brought these men to life in such a way I felt like I knew Gavin and Owen and was right there beside them as they journeyed through life.
An amazing story about the resilience of love and friendship, of pain and healing.
Highly recommend!!

An emotional journey
Owen and Gavin's journey blew me away. What started as a sweet exploration of young love turned into something so much more than that. Theirs was a story of dealing with the unfairness of life, of discovering who your true friends and family are, of traveling down a different path than expected but somehow still ending up exactly where you need to be. As I listened to Gavin and Owen experience the joys and pains of growing up, their story hit me on a visceral level. I felt their hope and joy and pain as deeply as my own, and while my heart ached for the innocent teenagers they left behind, there was something so fulfilling about seeing how time and circumstances shaped them into men. At times, the losses Owen and Gavin experienced made me feel like I was being ripped apart, but that same pain was what made their journey vividly real. The men they grew into had remnants of the teenagers I met in those first few chapters, but so much had changed that I did wonder if their adult selves would still have room in their hearts to love the new versions of each other. Their relationship had vicious clashes, jealous fits, misunderstandings, and long periods of separation that almost made me give up. To say their romantic journey wasn't easy is an understatement, and knowing how difficult the path was made their happily-ever-after all the more satisfying. I can't begin to describe the way these men touched my heart, and though at times I hated Nicky James for putting them through so much, I don't think I would have loved their story as much had it unfolded any other way.
**I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

Wow, this audiobook is amazing and what a rollercoaster of a ride it was too! What started as a typical boy meets boy romance quickly and dramatically turned into a harrowing, difficult and emotional story. Not knowing (or even guessing) what would come next just added to the story. Really well written and narrated. Off to find more from the same author... :-)

Perfect narration for this heartbreaking book
This book is the worst (in a best way) from Nicky. No other of her books can compare to this one on the level of angst this has. And to listen to this story on audio, wow.
I never and I mean never ever wanted to read this story again becaus it was that hearbreaking for the first time, but guess who's a masochist and listened to it? I can't with myself...
I wanted to cry many, many times while listening to it. The narrator did an amazingly perfect job with this book, and oh god, save my sanity, it was more than enough to listen it once. It hurts so bad.

I loved high school Owen and Gavin. They were such a cuties, they were happy and ignorant to the adult life. They biggest probleme was to find a hiding spot to kiss or make out. They were everything. They had their life planned together forever. And as they believed in it, I did too.
Then Nicky James happened... lol
I think I screamed cried and tried to throw my kindle away...countless times. But I hoped. And hoped...
The book was beautiful and heartbreaking. I loved and didn't loved at the same time.
I hurt for Owen and I hurt for Gavin. Their happiness was my number one priority, but Nicky James thought it differently...
So I still read and hoped. And screamed. A lot.
Owen and Gavin, I just wanted them to be happy. And I mean happy together, because they were meant for each other. And I couldn't wait to read finally about it!
As I said, it was a heartbreakingly beautiful book, I felt all the feelings, and I just wanted to hug Owen and Gavin and tell them that everything will be fine at the end, just wait for it. I still want to hug them and never let them go. They are the cutest and they deserve the very best in life.
Highly recommend it, just be prepared for all the feels, and get a box of tissues too!

Deeply touching
This is again why I have this author on auto buy. How she is able to write such heartbreaking and heartwarming stories is just amazing to me.
This starts about a couple teen age guys who discover each other. This intro to their story is so heartwarming. But coming out isn’t everything anyone would hope for, especially when its your relatives who hold so much power over a child. The power Gavin’s dad uses over him is madding. The effect this has over both of these guys lives plus those around them is unforgivable. As the author takes the story down the path each guy travels made me cry more than once. I have to say the laughs are less, yet the pull between these two kept me hopeful till the end. I completely ignored sleep and a couple other things until I knew the end. The only negative part I found in the story is Gavin’s mom. Too little too late. I want to thank Nick J. Russo for his narration. He made these characters and emotions alive.

Emotional challenge
Story: In typical Nicky James fashion, no punches are held and the issues the MCs face are painfully contemporary and important. My heart was in a vise grip troughout and there were so many parts that resonated deeply with me!
Great book and a prime example of the author's skills in creating an emotional wringer that leaves the reader wanting more every time.
Narration: Spot on performance from Nick J. Russo. Emotional, easy to follow and enhancing the experience.
