Dorothy L. Sayers was best known for her mystery novels featuring aristocratic amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey. But she was also a poet, playwright and committed Christian, and in The Man Born to Be King, she combined art and evangelism to powerful effect, making the story of Christ accessible, relevant and every bit as thrilling as her detective fiction.

Story
When Harriet Vane attends her Oxford reunion, known as the 'Gaudy', the prim academic setting is haunted by a rash of bizarre pranks: scrawled obscenities, burnt effigies and poison-pen letters - including one that says, 'Ask your boyfriend with the title if he likes arsenic in his soup.' Some of the notes threaten murder, and one of them involves a long Latin quotation, which makes Harriet suspect that the perpetrator is probably a member of the Senior Common Room. But which of the apparently rational, respectable dons could be committing such crazed acts?

Story
Barbara Pym is one of the 20th-century's wittiest, and most underrated, novelists. Her perceptive comedies of manners, centred around the domestic lives and loves of unassuming middle-class Englishwomen, won her many devoted readers and saw her hailed as a modern-day Jane Austen. Yet she spent 15 years out of print in the 1960s and '70s, until Philip Larkin championed her work in the Times Literary Supplement. Her seventh novel was subsequently shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and writers from Jilly Cooper to Alexander McCall Smith continue to laud her talent today.

Publisher's Summary
Ian Carmichael stars as Lord Peter Wimsey in these definitive BBC radio dramatisations of Dorothy L Sayers' classic crime novels.
Aristocratic amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey was the master creation of Dorothy L Sayers, widely acknowledged as one of the four original 'Queens of Crime'. These full-cast adaptations - first broadcast on BBC radio in the 1970s, and presented here in their entirety - are admired by fans of the genre worldwide.
Whose Body? is the tale that first introduced Lord Peter to the world, and sees him investigating the case of a corpse in a Battersea bathtub and a vanished oil millionaire.
In Clouds of Witness, Lord Peter's eldest brother stands accused of murder. In collaboration with Inspector Parker, Wimsey slowly uncovers a web of lies and deceit within his own family....
Unnatural Death finds Peter probing the mysterious death of an elderly lady. He suspects foul play, and with the help of the indomitable Miss Climpson, sets about his investigations in deepest Hampshire....
Produced by Simon Brett (author of the Charles Paris series), these acclaimed dramas also feature Peter Jones, Patricia Routledge, Miriam Margolyes and Garard Green.

It was music that made me remove a star
I love books of almost every genre (excluding romance, non-fiction, and westerns) and English murder mysteries have a special place in my heart HOWEVER I had the worse time with that music!! There was no need. It didn’t add to anything and worse it was recorded at a higher decibel than the narration. I wear earphones (very very good ones) and was gardening while listening to this and at times the narrators voices became almost whispers then suddenly that infernal music would blast my eardrums. Had the stories themselves been unentertaining then I would have given up. I also do find that the mix of so many voices does tend to confuse one as we are expected to KNOW the characters by voice alone at times. And some of the narrators rushed through their lines that I missed a bit here and there.
All in all, if you can find these books read by ONE person you will definitely find it more enjoyable. However based on the story itself I have to give credit where credit is earned and this book earned my credit

Great dialogue adaptations - irritating music
Voices get really quiet and hard to hear and then the music come up extremely loud. There is no middle ground with the audio. You go from, what wa that? I have to back up, to having horns blast out your eardrums. I would prefer less intro and exit music and more dialogue.
Aside from the horns and volume problems, the stories are enjoyable.
I am getting the next in this series, as there are currently no unabridged Audible versions of the individual stories available.

Annoying
I purchased the book because I have very high regard for the author Dorothy Sayers. And on balance the detective stories were not too bad. It is a clone of Sherlock Holmes but instead of Dr. Watson there is Inspector Parker and butler Hunter to help Lord Wimsey.
What made the book annoying, was the recording production, perhaps the original production from the BBC radio series, which included very loud blaring muted trumpets that separated each of the episodes. The recording volume of those separating interludes was extremely loud and forced me to turn down the volume or even remove my headphones every time we came to one. This is perhaps a minor matter, but it was very annoying and happened between scenes within episodes and for when longer periods between episodes. in addition, for the North American audience the combination of very strong British accents, which was a delight, and low recording volume for the voices, especially compared to the music, made it sometimes difficult to hear and understand the narration. Finally, some of the stories captured one's interest, but others were not so exciting, and bogged down with so much of the traditional British way of interacting, whereby the courtesies of greetings and interactions slowed the progress of the plot. I had thought I would buy another of these series from the BBC, with Dorothy Sayers, but I probably will not.

A Must Listen for All Lord Peter Wimsey Fans
This volume 1 contains 3 separate Lord Peter stories. I believe they are all abridged to some extent but done in an excellent manner such that the story flows easily. The characters and voices are most enjoyable. I got a kick out of Patricia Rutledge , of the BBC s "Keeping Up Appearances" and "Hetty Wainthrop Investigetes", who voices Lord Peter's mother.

Classic and well performed Lord Peter Wimsey
Charming, intelligent, club land hero with a difference, Dorothy L Sayers Lord Peter Wimsey detective story. A pity not unabridged, but well performed and superbly played by Ian Carmichael. It is a tragedy that the Audible unabridged versions of the D. L. Sayers books are appallingly badly read.

Faithful interpretation of the original
Dorothy L Sayers is not everyone's cup of tea, and I have to admit to feeling faintly ashamed of enjoying her books, given her reactionary politics, but I suppose she was a creature of her time. That said, this is a very good adaptation of what is a uniquely English genre - if you aren't already a fan of Lord Peter then it's probably not for you.

Author and cast in top form...
Ian Carmichael and Peter Jones are the definitive Wimsey and Bunter. Carmichael's hard work studying Wimsey's persona led to brilliant characterisation, and Bunter's laconic and deferential understatements are a gem of the relationship between man and master in English society. Oh that it could be so nowadays. Dorothy L Sayers is first amongst equals for me.

Brilliant dramatisations of Dorothy L. Sayers classic books. The cast are wonderful, and Ian Carmichael is a very good Lord Peter. I loved the sound effects.
