Two cultures. Two families. Two people.

THE NEW INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER FROM THE BOOKER PRIZE-SHORTLISTED AUTHOR OF BRICK LANE

Yasmin Ghorami has a lot to be grateful for: a loving family, a fledgling career in medicine and a charming, handsome fiancé, fellow doctor Joe Sangster.

But as the wedding day draws closer and Yasmin's parents get to know Joe's firebrand feminist mother, both families must confront the unravelling of long-held secrets, lies and betrayals.

As Yasmin dismantles her own assumptions about the people she holds most dear, she's also forced to ask herself what she really wants in a relationship and what a 'love marriage' actually means.

Love Marriage is a story about who we are and how we love in today's Britain—with all the complications and contradictions of life, desire, marriage and family. What starts as a captivating social comedy develops into a heart-breaking and gripping story of two cultures, two families and two people trying to understand one another.

Really Something Different

This was for me a fascinating insight into different lives. Beautifully crafted. I felt at last I could understand more clearly the lives, personalities and desires of people whose humanity was inclusive.

Bloody brilliant

This grabbed me immediately , and had me lingering in the car to listen to more, felt that the characters were very real , got the different voices convincingly, characters that could in less skilful hands have been caricatures were nuanced , human , virtues and flaws and they all behaved in ways that were believable (almost )
The narration was superb ,enhanced the experience , fabulous , will be recommending widely xx

Long story for nothing.

Story is boring and not exiting. Waste of time for me. Sorry. But Ayesha Dharker's performance is perfect.

Excellent, entertaining, contemporary

Really great read which tells a fascinating tale of the quagmire of contemporary life. As always, Monica Ali expertly blends humour with pathos and narrator Ayesha Dharker delivers it all with flair.

Soap opera

Resembles too much a soap opera in some places, but overall it's an interesting work.

Wonderful, life-affirming book

Superb novel exploring almost every facet of life. Great performance of a story so well written, that in my mind it is almost registered as a film. Huge respect for Monika Ali not only for the beautiful writing but also for her research on medical matters weaved into her story - life on the wards as well as actual medical conditions. I am heading straight on to reading Brick Lane.

Brilliant

This is not for someone looking for a thriller- it is a sensitive journey through the life of a family. Lots of surprises and thrilling moments. I just loved it and learnt so much through the lives of the characters.

great. loved it.

I really enjoyed this story... . getting emmersed in Indian customs, the whole premis of how we make wrong assumptions , the mix of cultures, the unreliable narrator, the damage parents do.... all these things done so deftly as well as being really well read. Feel bereft now it's finished!

A must-read: Monica Ali at her best

I literally didn't get any sleep for two nights because I couldn't stop listening. I kept putting the sleep timer on for 60 minutes and re-setting until I accepted that I just wasn't going to be able to forgo the listening pleasure. Brilliant characters, beautifully drawn; great story arc and perfectly read by Ayesha Dharker. Only problem now is the age-old one of finishing a book you've loved and wondering if the next will pale in comparison.
I envy all the readers who still have the joy of reading this for the first time. Highly recommended!

Stumbled on this gem by chance and so glad I did

I found this book by mistake - got the title wrong of the novel we’d picked at book club. So pleased I did as this was a fantastic read. It turned out to be so much more complex and intriguing than first appeared. The narration was excellent - loved all the characters’ voices but especially the voice the narrator gave Anissa, just magic. Highly recommend this book!

Enjoyed this during my week in iso!

Could have been a shorter novel, but overall, I was hooked. Wanted something not dark or depressing and this was an interesting story about how we see our parents, love and different kinds of friendships and relationships.

Loved everything about this

An engrossing story. So well written, the detail was extraordinary. Engaging from the first page to the last. Ayesha Dharker narrated this superbly. I loved listening to her and the life she brought to Monica Ali’s characters. Loved it all
