Publisher's Summary

Love has been driven out of our workplaces. How do we get it back in?

We're in the middle of an epidemic of stress and anxiety. Average life expectancy in the US is down. At work, less than sixteen percent of us are fully engaged. In many high-stress jobs such as distribution centers, emergency room nursing, and teaching, incidences of PTSD are higher than veterans returning from war zones.

We are getting something terribly wrong. Our workplaces fail utterly to provide for or capitalize on one of our most basic human needs: our need for love.

As Marcus Buckingham shows in this eye-opening, uplifting book, love is an energy, and it must flow. It demands expression—and that expression is "work." There's no learning without love, no innovation, no service, no sustainable growth. Love and work are inextricable.

Buckingham first starkly highlights the contours of our loveless work lives and explains how we got here. Next, he relates how we all develop best in response to another human being. What does a great work relationship look like when the other person is cued to your loves? Finally, he shows how you can weave love back into the world of work, and how to make this a discipline for the rest of your life.

Love + Work powerfully shows why love must come first at work, and how we can make this happen.

Very much worth it

I’ve read every one of Marcus’ books. He went a slightly different direction with this one. Get to part 3 as quickly as possible. I put it down for months because he rehashes some of his older writings, but I wish now that I had not put it down. Please keep reading until the end. It’s worth it.

Captivated

I have been a fan of Marcus Buckingham’s work since First, Break All The Rules. I have been helping people learn about StandOut through work, and am familiar with his studies around strengths. I can easily say I loved this book. Not only did this reinforce what I believe, it was moving and personally told. I was completely drawn in. Thank you for continuing to shine the light on what makes us uniquely human.

Insightful, challenging, provoking, and intriguing

I am a 60 year old reader with three adult children 4 grandchildren, and still raising our 17 year old adopted daughter. I have a lot of experience in life and enjoy reading so I purchased this book to read and gain new insights that would help my team at work. Not only was it insightful, it was also challenging, provoking, and intriguing for work and family life. Each member of my work world approaches life differently. Each family member has very different loves, motivations, passions, and needs that make up who they are, My regret is that I did not have access to this book 40 years ago as I would have raised my family differently. I would have encouraged difference’s with better understanding. I would have approached my own decisions with an improved mindset. I have given the book to several others to help them be better fathers, better employees, stronger people. Thanks for the book Marcus.

Growth-promoting indeed!

This is truly one of the most growth-promoting books I’ve read/listened to in quite a while. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Each turn of the page brings with it a reminder of my “Wyrdness” and the gifts that come with it, and the subtle reminder that I’m a gift, just as I am, for this moment in time. A big thank you, Marcus!! 🤗

one of the BEST books!

One of the BEST books I have ever listened to/read. Incredibly insightful and thought provoking. Found myself teary-eyed more times than I'd like to admit. I have recommended this book to at least 20 of my closest friends and relatives. Definitely worth a read/listen. The Audible version is REALLY GOOD too!!!

Brilliant insights from a Passionate Truth Seeker.

This book is designed to upend conventional thinking about work. Gone are the days of “fitting in” and conformity; now, more than ever, companies that thrive in the global marketplace rely on the unique, individual strengths and talents of their employees. By enabling people to focus on what they love in their work, we can transform the workplace, and the human experience.

Amazingly written and narrated.

This book is outstanding. A great reminder to trust our intuition, I hadn’t felt so eager for change since I read First, Break All the Rules in 2007.

Thank you for transparency and insight in loving!

What a wonderful, altruistic, and assiduous book that is impacting and extremely relevant!
Thank you for taking the time to share intimate information about your family that we all can relate too or are living in and providing thoughts and direction that may help.
I now have ideas on how to love myself and others, especially my child for who they are!
It is greatly appreciated my friend!

life advice and not just work related

I was looking forward to this book coming out so I purchased the audio book and the hard copy to read along taking notes. I’m at the point in life Iv run my own company for almost 2 decades and navigated through the covid pandemic, so Iv been feeling lost and re-evaluating my career as many are at this time. This is a great guide to drown out the over-welling noise of life , decisions, the day to day balancing of it all and narrow it down to core life/love choices to move forward. The surprise was it’s not just work related but includes the tools to teach our children life skills and be able to see them for who they are. Im grateful to the author for pointing out these parenting skills , so I can understand my children’s loves and give them the correct support. Great book

This is not a "#FollowYourPassions" book!

I think everyone should read this book, but I think it will resonate most with those who are a decade or more into their careers and are maybe now starting to fall out of love with the job they used to enjoy so much. It offers hope, and tangible, concrete actions one can take to find what they love and find ways to make that their work. Don't be fooled, this is not your run of the mill "follow your passions" fluff, it goes deep, with science and reasoning that will make you reconsider things you always took to be true.

Excellent way to look at work differently

I loved this book, it was written in a way that made you think about the concepts in your own life, and ideas were real food for thought.

I think the book was well written, well read and it felt almost more a conversation rather than a lecture which some books can be.

Drawn out

A few snippets of useful advice but nothing that you couldn't get from reading a single article on the topic. Difficult to listen to the end as some of the stories / examples seem to go on forever!

Simply amazing

A good critic to the current education and corporate system we live in. There's a lot of good lessons regarding life, work and of course, love. Good motivation, I came because of the Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett. Would recommend 10/10!
