Publisher's Summary

Bloomsbury presents M Train by Patti Smith, read by Patti Smith.

M Train begins in the tiny Greenwich Village café where Smith goes every morning for black coffee, ruminates on the world as it is and the world as it was, and writes in her notebook. Through prose that shifts fluidly between dreams and reality, past and present, and across a landscape of creative aspirations and inspirations, we travel to Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul in Mexico; to a meeting of an Arctic explorer’s society in Berlin; to a ramshackle seaside bungalow in New York’s Far Rockaway that Smith acquires just before Hurricane Sandy hits; and to the graves of Genet, Plath, Rimbaud and Mishima.

Woven throughout are reflections on the writer’s craft and on artistic creation. Here, too, are singular memories of Smith’s life in Michigan and the irremediable loss of her husband, Fred Sonic Smith. Braiding despair with hope and consolation, M Train is a meditation on travel, detective shows, literature and coffee. It is a powerful, deeply moving book by one of the most remarkable artists at work today.

I cried when it was over

I'm new to Patti Smith, somewhat late to the party ...this is one of the books I wish I'd been able to read when i was young and had infinite possibilities before me ...Now in middle age, ive still got a few - this book compelled me to commit to making them happen. Beautifully read by Patti herself, I can't recommend M Train highly enough. This is how writers should write.

A sublime memoir

An intimate and reflective journey through a life with love, loss and literature as the touchstones. Dteams and coffeshops figure large in Patti's life and we should all be grateful that notebooks and pens do to.

Beguiling, wistful, tragic and inspirational.

Patti Smith narrates these stories with a kind of languid beauty. These tales are from the story of her life and give an insight into her creative process. A masterful book.

The intimate life of an extraordinary artist

I have always liked Patti Smith. Untypically for a book of this type she writes not about her achievements in her work but of the intimate aspects of her life. Anyone who has read or listened to her previous book "Just Kids" will know of the love she had for her husband, the late Fred "Sonic" Smith and there are further stories here about their live together. She also writes about things that matter to her in her life such as an ill fitting black coat that was given to her as a gift and stones she has collected from her travels and of her home at Rockaway Beach and nights in London hotel rooms watching ITV3 box sets. I found Patti's voice to be warming and endearing and I loved every minute of listening to this. Patti Smith is an extraordinary artist and I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Patti Smiths words and voice make me feel at home

I read this book first out of her collection. I was completely swept away. I love it with all of my heart. Her ability to capture states of being, feeling and dreaming have spoken so clearly to the way I experience the world. Hearing her read is mesmerising and comforting.
