Publisher's Summary

Mad Magic is a beautifully dark and rich young adult fantasy from Nicole Conway, best-selling author of the Dragonrider Chronicles.

Josie Barton is a high school student living in terror. Invisible creatures torment her everywhere she goes, constantly getting her into trouble at school, and even haunting her apartment. But just when Josie thinks things couldn't get any worse, she meets the guy from across the hall.

Zeph Clemmont is a changeling with enemies in all the worst places, fighting to undo a curse that threatens to end his life. Survival means he will have to swallow his pride and trust Josie with all his darkest secrets.

With the help of a gunslinging shaman and the enigmatic Prince of Nightmares, Zeph and Josie are only a heartbeat away from defeating one of the most diabolical faerie villains their world has ever known.

Who is responsible for producing this????

This review isn’t about the story, or even the narrator, it’s about the insanely unprofessional production. I was actually liking this book, but then, horrifyingly, the narrator broke the fourth wall in chapter 3, drops right out of the narration and says in her regular voice: “hey, so, um, usually I would do text messages in a characters voice, but um, there’s a BIG REVEAL coming up. I’m not even going to tell you yet, so I’m just going to do them in her [the MC’s] neutral voice instead.” Then, she goes back into the story in the MCs voice like nothing happened.

WHAT. THE. HELL. Who produced this?? Who made that direction?? I am astounded at how unprofessional this is. Way to ruin what could have been a decent book.

This was disturbing.

A sad, lonely, orphaned 17 year old (aka minor) girl meets her hot (30 plus a lot of somethings) neighbor when he saves her from a scary monster that's been living in her apartment/closet. Within a couple of days she decides she is in love with him. No, I'm not kidding. Yes, it was as awkward as it sounds. I was constantly cringing. Honestly the age difference was less of a problem for me than the mc's psychological state. She just latched on to the first person to show her the smallest kindness. The creepy and pathetic aspects of this story completely overwhelmed anything good about it. I made it a little over half way through and couldn't stand it anymore. I skipped to the last chapter or two to see how it ended. If the main character had been about to graduate from college instead of high school she still would have been kind of pathetic but at least it would have eliminated the creepy puppy love aspect. I'm very disturbed by how many good reviews this book has.

Off putting narration

The narrator's childish voice coupled with some of the adult content was off putting for me. It might also be that I just don't like listening to glorified borderline pedophilia, but maybe I am sensitive. Either way, it just wasn't for me. Also, while the story had some interesting creative elements, there was very little depth to the character development.

Overall great book, odd recording style

I really enjoyed this book, I thought it was great. It could have been better with more details around the age difference and “heart chord”. Because it really does come off as an adult being a predator on a young virgin sometimes. But it’s a young adult novel, so I guess that is expected? What was truly frustrating was WHY IN THE EARTH DID THE NARRATOR STOP THE STORY TO SPOIL A PART OF THE BOOK! As noted in a previous review, the narrator stopped and broke all the walls to mention that she wouldn’t use a certain voice about reading emails/texts, because it would give away a spoiler. I almost immediately knew who “Ben” was. That was incredibly frustrating. They should have just read it in the Josie characters voice, since she is the one reading the texts in her own mind? A few words were mispronounced as well. If not mispronounced, then said it a super odd way. If it wasn’t for that break in the story, the narration would have been really amazing. But I almost turned off the book after the break. I’m glad I kept listening for the story, it was pretty great.

Enjoyable and clean

I think I enjoyed the whole story except for the blurb put in by the narrator. That did not need to be included… It actually made it Obvious what direction the story was going into. Other than that I was ready for the release the performance was well done and the characters by the end of the story had been nicely developed

Great book but got lost in some of the words and would have to rewind and listen to some parts over and over.

Unexpected

Was thinkin this is another relationship teen drama. This story had some teen love stuff, but it fits inside nice story of bias world where friend are not easy to find. Haven't listened other books from the series yet but hopefully thy are as good.

Overall, very enjoyable.

The story and the narration were very compelling, however notes for the editor were not removed, which spoiled a plot point.

The romance parts are pretty creepy

Can't say too much because of spoilers, but the relationship between Jossie and Zeph really spoiled my enjoyment of the book as it is super super creepy. It's a decent enough story otherwise, if not a little predictable even by YA standards.

Loved it!

The beginning was a bit deja vu for me as I’m sure I’ve heard a very similar storyline somewhere before! I really loved it though and I loved the characters, the only thing I was a bit dodgy about and would have changed was the whole creepy ‘waiting until she was of age’ kind of vibes and how he knew she was his soul mate at 3! (Vomit!) and the fact that she was at school still and that they were already kind of in love made me soooo uncomfortable and really made me feel icky but I did really enjoy the book and the narrator was phenomenal! I really hope she narrates the rest of this authors books!

Was a bit different to the usual in this genre

I'm a good way.Was not all sex sex for starters lol. Good story like but had parts which were a bit boring. It's got alot of potential considering all the different fey. So I'm hoping next book has that extra kick not to say did not enjoy this one.
Narrator done a good job at different characters all though Frosty had a London cokney accent an I'm as cockny as it gets but I don't sound like that lol. I find when Americans to London accent it usually sounds something like that. Starting book 2 now
