Publisher's Summary

From the author of the New York Times bestselling King’s Dark Tidings series comes a prequel novel set in that world.

Wesson is still years from becoming a man when an immense darkness stirs within his core. The sinister power bursts free during a confrontation with an old enemy, and Wesson’s tranquil life is left in tatters.

Forced to flee a murderous mob, Wesson stumbles onto a tumultuous path where he must confront the destructive power he has awakened. He must learn control over the power he wields or risk being consumed by it. As he wrestles with his training, an assassin stalks his every move. This new enemy is sent by a mysterious foe, one who will force Wesson to choose between the kindness in his heart and the seductive power in his soul.

Mage of No Renown can be enjoyed as a standalone, but be warned: it will likely lead you into Free The Darkness.

It was OK at best

I found this story frustrating mainly because it felt repetitive, and having a chosen one character who doesn’t have any interest in their powers just doesn’t seem to flow well. The main character just sounded like a whiny little brat that is just unlikable. The storytelling felt vibrant and very vivid, but I just thought the characters were lackluster. It’s giving... a Marvel movie made for a relatively unknown hero that we honestly don’t really care too much about - basically, phase 4 characters. If this were a book and not performed by Nick, I probably would’ve gotten halfway through and never came back to it. Sorry but I still love you, KK

Struggling to finish

I'm really struggling to finish this book. by chapter 8 I was rooting for the assassin. the main character is so whiny that the voice the narrator does fits in perfectly. and it's such a cliche storyline that honestly I don't even want to finish I just want to return the book get my credit back and get something else.

Update* returned I hope the villain wins.

I enjoyed it

This Writer, the Rezkin world and most especially this narrator.

It’s a legit guarantee I’m going to like it.
Also a guarantee I’m going to want more. It’s short, which always sucks.

Buts it’s been so long I’ll take anything

Absolutely cringe

Nick is amazing as usual. However, the main character is a whiney, obnoxious, cringe worthy protagonist.

He has a natural affinity, but refuses to use it. It's not an evil skill, but he throws fits when people tell him to use it. Instead, he struggles to become a mage by other means.

Kel Kade made the strongest baddest battlemage into a softy crybaby

From kings dark tidings to this is like watching game of thrones to Dora the explorer. Wes is such a weak ass mage all about morals and being good. We don’t spend our hard earn money to listen to books about being a soft weak nice guy that won’t kill. We listen to audiobooks so we can escape the mundane life we live daily. Such a shame kel kade is a great author I really don’t understand why she went this direction with the main character.

Love KK but this was a miss for me

Can't stand the two tropes used all throughout this story...

One: An absurdly whiney and reactive main character

Two: An overly reluctant chosen one who doesnt want his powers...to the point it strains credulity

The storytelling is vibrant and the narration is spot on as always.
My issues with young Wesson constantly break up any enjoyment I'm deriving from the story telling. I keep getting pulled away from the story wishing the main character, WHO I LOVE IN THE KDT BOOKS, would just hurry up and lose.

The constant hand ringing, self recriminations, and whining about who he is and what he's done gets exhausting really quickly.
...Self loathing??? I cant stand him either

Seems like he had happiness once when he was 12 and hasnt tried to do anything except get that back... except without much actual effort, just complaining about the way life changes

Great addition to the story.

I really enjoyed this addition to the KDT tale. It was a good look at one of my favorite characters and a great exploration of his motivations.

A compelling backstory

Wesson has been one of my favorite characters in the series since his introduction in book 2. This story is a very well done backstory to his character. I found it to be quite enthralling throughout the entirety of its 11 hour run time.

Great addition with a couple short comings

Great addition but a little short. More depth into his training and time at the academies would have been the icing on the cake. Also, the main protagonists was a little too dumb for his station. He kept missing obvious solutions to his problems and hints to how powerful Wesson is

Mixed feelings

Let me start off by saying the performance was great minus how annoying the young girls voices sounded. The main character was so whiny to the point it was annoying. Quite a bit of the plot was too thin, sometimes a little unbelievable.

As always enjoyable

Kel Kade weaves the plot and the characters flawlessly and you automatically slip into this realm. I love this series and this just gives the depth of character that Wesson was missing. I rereading the series to then read the new book can’t wait!

YES!!!!

Flipping loved it. Nick P smashed the narration as always. Seriously, why he hasn’t read aloud every book in existence is beyond me. Also Kel K has smashed this story out of the park. It is exactly what was needed before the next instalment of Kings Dark Tidings. Thank you

love it

I read al the Kings dark tidings book and waited for this one a long time.
I love that we get a glimpse of the history of journeyman Wessen. Now it is more clear where he and his aversion of his powers come from.
We learn how powerful he really is and why he is so determined to do goed. I enjoy every minute of this book.

Ok I’m biased, but

I loved this book. The latest from Kel Kade and the best from my perspective, can’t wait for the next one. Having been introduced to Wesson through the Kings Dark Tidings, I was really interested to hear his story and this exceeded my expectations. Very clever and very well told. Nick Podehl delivered a brilliant narration again.

Well done!

I've waited 4 years for anything to do with the KDT world and I enjoyed reading this addition, it definitely adds depth to Wessen's character and explains a few things about his back story but I feel that instead of a whole book about Wessen, it could've been many short stories adding depth of many of the KDT characters. I am looking forward to KDT 5.

A welcome return to form

Kel Kade’s King’s Dark Tidings series has always been one of my favourites. There’s just something charming about the world and characters.

With her other series, Shroud of Prophecy not quite hitting the mark, I’ve certainly been concerned with the future of KDT. Luckily it seems my concerns have been assuaged. Taking a break seems to have been the right move because Mage of No Renown is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. The passion is there.

One of the things that I’ve noticed about Kel Kade’s earlier instalments of KDT and this book was the pacing. The story moves from one scene to the next fluidly with little down time between them. This is very important and Kingdoms and Chaos was a good example of the pacing being ‘not quite right.’

It’s very nice to see the backstory that’s been hinted at for many years now, and if Dragons and Demons can match or exceed the quality of this prequel, I’m very excited.

Good work Kel! I’ll always keep reading your books even if I’m not a fan of some.

great book ties in perfectly with king's dark

great prequel that fleshes out wessens backstory and sets up future interactions. I would recommend reading this after book 2 of king's dark tidings for it to fit into the series

Disappointing Ending.

The character just stays the same throughout the entire book. at the end the main character annoyed me a bit. the book had great potential though. I'll probably still buy the second one.

Didn’t expect to care, but ended up getting hooked

I love all of Kel Kade’s books. If you don’t, don’t listen to this one because it’s pretty on brand. I didn’t expect to care, though, about wessen and his story. I care much, much more about Rezkin and his story and how he navigates life with the restrictions of his rules.

Half way through Mage of No Renown though, I ended up hooked. Like I always do. It was great. It didn’t go how I thought, and I like that. It’s nothing too overly exciting, but the character of Wessen shines in the book and his plight is definitely well written.

Another sensational instalment of the Rezkin saga

The storyline and pace are incredible. As usual Nick Podehls performance was exceptional.
I find Kel Kades writing very refreshing, enough detail to spark the imagination and not so much to detract from the unfolding of the story. The characters unfold and develop in a very natural way.

Can't wait for Kings Tidings 5.

Old friends

Once again a well written book and masterful narration. My only complaint is that now I’m even MORE anxious to learn of Wessons fate in KDT5.
