Publisher's Summary

In 1942, telegrams always bring life-altering and tragic news in a war-hardened world - and the one Maggie Marshall receives is no different. But running a restaurant with the help of only pregnant, unwed girls has taught her to be tough. Maggie's no weeping widow, but Charlotte Penfield thinks she's the most unfeeling woman on earth. Seventeen, exiled by her wealthy parents, and working in the restaurant, fanciful Charlotte runs away with romantic notions of a reunion with her baby's father at his military camp.

It has been years since Maggie darkened the church door of her pastor and childhood friend, Reverend Reuben Fennel, and his heart breaks for the hardened woman Maggie's become. When she seeks his help to find Charlotte, he's happy to aid her in the chase - though it may cost him his job and reputation.

Over the miles from Winnipeg to Fort William, Reuben and Maggie's journey rekindles their affection - and their dreams of what they still could be. But Maggie stubbornly clings to her independent ways until she's dealt another devastating loss, one that forces her to recognize that heroes can be discovered in unlikely places and love may be far sweeter than she ever dared imagine.

Engaging Entry In Religous/Inspirational Books

I happened upon this wonderful book on Kindle Unlimited which included the audible narration with the download of the kindle book. While the title does involve an historic setting, home front Canada during WWII, I think the book is mis-classified and missing its target audience. I believe that the book would be better listed in the Religious Inspirational rather than the Historic Fiction category. Further, the cover photo is misleading so don't let that stop you from trying the book.

To me, the writing was really well done. Todd captures her characters and setting beautifully with carefully chosen descriptions and excellent dialogue. She uses a pared down writing style that gets the message across without belaboring every little detail and overwhelming the storytelling. The characters are believable which makes them easy to relate to and care about.

Wright's narration was excellent. I was unsure that having a man read a book with so many female voices would work out. In fact, he succeeded beautifully and I really enjoyed hearing him read. His timing and tone for each character were perfect.

Be aware that while the book deals with WWII and life in Canada in the 1940s the historic aspects of the story take a back seat to the religious message. Spiritual thought, prayer and the growing belief in God for the characters takes center stage. This was a positive, redemptive and hopeful story which tackled a variety of difficult subjects with aplomb. If you are a fan of Religious/Inspirational books this may be something you might really enjoy. I'm glad I listened.

Good story of real pain and real love

A story of pain and mistakes and redemption woven in WWII Canada. I enjoyed this book but not the narrator so much. He was pedantic and slow. I'm glad I sped him up a notch - otherwise I'd have missed a good book. He's not a deal breaker, but it would be so much better with a good narrator. It's worth reading or listening!

Excellent read

I love how the author weaves together characters from the previous story while creating a whole New world, a story about all new characters. This is a rich story. What's next? Also the audio on both books is wonderful.

No Christian fiction warning

The book is well written. I would really enjoy the story if I were a fan of religious historical fiction, but I’m not. Maybe I missed something, but I didn’t see anything about the Christian theme of the story line. It didn’t start until hours into the audiobook. I had to stop listening, it was so over the top. If you enjoy Christian fiction and WWII era novels, you’ll love this book. Skip this one if you aren’t into the religious genre.
