On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is...different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight.

Publisher's Summary
In the second book in number-one New York Times best-selling author Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, tempers - and temperatures - are rising!
A mercenary in magic-torn Atlanta who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen it all - and some things she couldn't even have imagined. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow like an ocean current. But once every seven years, a paranormal flare comes and brings magic like a tidal wave. Now Kate faces problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.
When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta's paramilitary organization of shapeshifters, she quickly realizes the stakes. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the first contest in an epic tug-of-war between two gods hoping for rebirth. And if Kate can't stop their cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive.

So good!
I had issues with the first book, but this did not deter me from checking out book 2. People love this series and so I decided to give the series one more chance and since I had my monthly freebie from Audible, I decided to get this one.
Kate is a mercenary who cleans up after magic goes wrong. Well, this time a tide of magic is coming that will boost everyone's powers. She has to retrieve a set of stolen maps that was stolen from the Pack. Well...nothing can be simple or easy. She has to deal with a lot in this one.
I'm actually liking Kate. I wasn't a huge fan in the last one, but we get to understand her more. Personally and her powers. We got to see more of the world and it connected a lot of dots for me. I'm slowly liking Curran...a bit. He's still an asshat, but I understand him more now.
This was SO much better than the first one. I could hardly step away and turn off the audiobook. I had to listen to more. I was hooked from the first page. The narrator was really, really good so I think this helped me like the story and characters more. The writing and the narration were amazing.
I do want to see what happens next, but I was content on how they ended this book. No cliffies. Just some promise and a question. I am curious, but I don't feel forced...which is a huge plus and the way to end a book in a series.
So yessssss, if you did not like book 1, do not stop. Read or listen to book 2. So good. I'll stamp this with 5 stars. I had zero issues.

"Glad you made it... Sike!" - The Beast Lord
I like the way the romance in this series is developing. Such a good pace. Not the instant, love at first sight type crazy stuff. Instead, I think we are going to get to see a real journey of two people learning to love each other.
One thing about Kate Daniel's so far is that she isnt tormented by being a kick-butt chick. So many female characters are weighed down by authors who want a kick-butt character but are too distracted by making her fit into a female heroine box. Girls can be bad. Females can be fierce. Chicks can be cruel. We dont fit into boxes.
The world building for this begins to make more sense to me in this one. I sorta kinda wasnt sure in the last book, but I get the whike Tech/Magic world now. Not until this book did I fully understand the whole "The People" thing too. The vampire section of the first book just didnt hit the A
-Ha button for me either. If you are like me and didnt a bit more explanation then you'll get that in Book 2.
There is something suspicious about Crest wanting to marry such a submissive shapeshifter... if they've been engaged for two months and it's been 4 months since book 1 then they had only known each other 2 months before getting engaged.
A sad thing about this is that I'm half way through the next book while writing this review. This means I wont have time to review them all. It also means they are so good I cant wait to start the next one.

My yearly go to book series
I can’t even explain how much I love the main character Kate. Unlike most main female characters of novels in this genre she’s extremely easy to like and root for, she’s sassy but not a brat and tough but still has a heart and normal emotions. This is the book that introduces Andrea Kate’s much needed female friend and also the book with one of my favorite endings. I’ve read this series probably 3 or 4 times already just waiting for Ilona and hubby to put out a new one. I know this part of the series is over but I can’t wait for more!

Great Book Brilliantly Read
Whilst the first book in this series was good - this one is excellent, probably because the scene setting was all done in book 1 this one just kicks off and you are hooked from page 1
Renee Raudmans narration is perfect and I would give it 6 stars if possible
My only moan is the rest of the series is all recorded - for example I can buy book 3 on Audio CD from Amazon UK for £25.00! but its not on Audible - in fact none of the rest of this series is on Audible UK (though all but books 3 and 4 are on the US site) so having to resort to Kindle for the rest which is fine when I have time to sit and read but not so good when I want to listen whilst doing other things.
Also the Narrator is one of those rare ones whose performance is actually better than just reading the book so its a bit annoying.
I wouldn't let it put you off the series though as long as you dont mind reading rather than listening

Superb storytelling
Goosebumps. I am in love with the series and this storytelling. I am so invested in the characters and the plots, the humor is almost lost on me. And I value humor. Guess I am finding out that a well written story can have integral components I value more. The plots have plots, and then there are glimpses of an underlying plot. The world building is amazing. The heroine as well, plus quite a few major secondary characters. The story has everything, and everything is in a class of it´s own. Just wow. Interesting, fun and gripping story. And storytelling at it´s finest. Brilliant authors and a perfect narrator. Thank you.

Another installment of the Kate Daniels saga. Great story, love the interactions between Kate and Curran, can't help but smile and wonder if they will ever get together.
Ilona Andrews is a brilliant story teller, she creates such complex and amazing characters that draw you in from the start. I am so invested in Kate and Curran and can't wait to see where their story takes them.
Renee does a great job of bringing the book to life and conveying the emotions of the moment.

Good Story, Not So Much The Narration
I liked the story, the mosters, the characters etc but I'm sorry to say the narrator's choice of voice for some of the characters drove me nuts. Two male characters were described as handsome or good looking but she gave one a dopey voice and the other started as a Dick Van Dyke impression from Mary Poppins then I really couldn't understand what his accent was supposed to be after that. Spoilt the audio for me. Some reviewers from the first book didn't like her character voices but it wasn't an issue for me with that book but this one I almost gave up on. I'll download the next one to see if it improves, if not I will sadly have to abandon this series.
