Publisher's Summary

Have you ever found yourself thinking your way into a tangle of fret, frustration, or gloom? And then something small - a few kind words, the sun glancing through the clouds, a warm cup of tea - gave you a welcome pause from all your inner chatter? With Making Friends with Your Mind, that's what Pema Chödrön helps us to do, not by chance but with our full intention: to stop fighting with our thoughts and reopen ourselves to wonder as naturally as we breathe.

The Buddha saw that the human experience is full of drama: confusion and conviction, joy and sorrow, success and failure - and that our minds love to amplify all of it. "We decide somebody or something is a certain way," muses Pema Chödrön, "and then that judgment gets frozen and fixated, long after things change. And things always change, right?"

In these free-spirited sessions, Ani Pema helps you to bring awareness to those inflexible thoughts and sticking points. Through meditations, daily practices, and the kind of simple pointers that can change our lives, you'll learn that it is entirely possible to return to the flow and freedom of your experiences - and to find your way each day closer to a place of unconditional friendliness with yourself and with those in need.

Love Pema but....

I think overall this was a great retreat there were pieces I could really glean from; however, there were way to many audience member questions and not enough teachings.

I felt a lot of what the audience asked were the same thing almost in some cases.

I most likely won't listen to this one again.

Acceptance and Peace with yourself

I really love Pema's books and talks, and this is no different.

I should point out, however, that this IS a live talk, or rather, a series of talks she gave in 2015 over a few days. Being live, there is an audience, and, in fact, in these talks, Pema invites a lot of audience questions.

This was GOOD.

Either the audio was later edited so only solid and valuable questions and responses were produced, or the audience was totally solid from the start. Very good insights by Pema, good life experience questions from the audience, that touched on various aspects of my own life and way of being with the world and myself.

I really recommend this if you like Pema Chodron's works.

Excellent style, potentially life-changing

Pema has a great, down-to-Earth style founded in Buddhism but with pragmatic insights that can change your perspective and life path

Beautiful talk.

Pema Chodron gives wonderful, useful advice for living life well. Great combination of her talking and then taking questions.

Calming. Full of warmth and wisdom.

Listening to Pema Chodron always gets me in a better frame of mind and gives me a sense of peace. This recording from a class she taught is wonderful. Presents Buddhist teachings and life lessons in an easygoing manner that calms me and nourishes my mind and soul. I'll listen to this again and again.

Too much audience, not enough Pema

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I was profoundly annoyed at the number of audience contributions. I wanted to hear Pema, not a bunch of whiny, self-involved others.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The audience detracted, Pema is great as always.

Any additional comments?

I still haven't finished listening because of my aggravation with the audience. Tkme to meditate more.

Not a book, but a recording of a workshop

What disappointed you about Making Friends with Your Mind?

Pema rambles around, digresses, and contradicts herself plenty. The blah, blah, and buzz word stuff "(the openness of what is already here", Etc) without practical applications. I believe at least two of the attendees to the seminar would agree with me, Pema sounded as wanting to be clever, rather than helpful, stating the obvious constantly along the recording without any sound or practical contribution to attendees questions..

Would you ever listen to anything by Pema Chödrön again?

Probably not

Would you be willing to try another one of Pema Chödrön’s performances?

Definitely not

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I was disappointed to waste my time, I didn't learn anything new.

Any additional comments?

I have been meditating daily for more than 20 years, I have documented myself and practiced plenty Buddhism and other eastern faiths and disciplines. I live a regular, "real" life in the United States and I understand why people, myself included, seek for solutions in the apparent calmness that Buddhism offers but we all must do our homework before we follow any of the "guru's" in the guru market. God is us, God is within and we are individually a force over which we possess free will.

normally love pema, but...

This is more q&a from people in the audience than her teaching; disappointing. A shame the format is not pointed out in the description so you know what you're getting

one of my favourite Pema audio books

The traditional Buddhist teachings are really brought to life by the regular q&a sessions with the audience. I will listen to this book again and would recommend it.

Soothing, illuminating, metaphorical

Having not listened to Pema Chodron before, this was an interesting take on how to better deal with - get comfortable with - unpleasant emotions. (Not negative or unwanted because apparently they're all just emotions that we can learn from and welcome as a part of us!) The combination of her talking and guiding, alongside audience questions felt useful.

Fantastic listen

Pema Chodron has this easy of delivering such important messages and making it so funny and relatable. To much better in audio version as you can hear people laugh. She does make references to meditation exercises given in sessions that aren't recorded in the book so felt like some important parts were missing a little.
