Clearly a genius but material dates

No as much a how to book as a biography. The methods and technology far too dated

great stories, but...

the book was great and if you're into film history this book will be great for you! I wouldn't say that this book has much to offer the modern filmmaker besides a great history lesson on the way things used to be.

Condoning sexual harrassment/assault

Pretty gross remarks casually talking about sexual harrassment. In the beginning of Chapter 2, he states: "I'm a big kisser myself, a toucher and a hugger as opposed to a groper. The producer arrives. Usually, he's the groper."

The best book written about filmmaking.

A superbly concise, frank, and highly informative book about every aspect of making movies. Sidney Lumet is one of the core filmmakers in movie history and brings all of his decades of experience to this definitive work.

One of the better "How To's" of Movie Making.

I bought this to enjoy the memoir of Sidney Lumet and hear some of the tales of his movie-making history. But this book is actually a better "how to" about how movies are made than most books that are marketed to be educational.

Learned a lot about Hollywood History and the ins and outs of getting a story to the screen.

TLDR, good book

Performance was alright, but there were several times when the mixing was very poor and it sounded like the voice actor was pulling away from mic or even as bad talking into a pillow. Learned a lot about film and the making of film, but there were still things I felt I didn’t learn. Also some of what’s being said just is very opinionated and director focus, but it’s a director who wrote it so what’re you gonna do. OVERALL good read, 7/10, closer to a 6

A Complete Film School

I get a lot of books for making movies. John Badham’s On Directing is really good. This makes That book look like it was written by Ed Wood.
