An Excellent Tale and Production
A wonderful telling of a classic tale of adventure and food. Redwall books are oft filled with adventures, battles, food, songs, and moments of peace. Mariel of Redwall is no exception to this and is a joy from start to finish.
The production brings this book to life in a wonderful way I was not expecting. All the characters are given rich voices that fit them. Even the songs within the book are sang and accompanied by instruments.

of all the books in the redwall series, this one has the best selection of characters, villians, heroes and sidekicks. the story itself is not as exciting as some of the other titles, but there is still some good action and it is a wonderful excuse to go romping around Moss flower with old friends!

Decent, with a few caveats
This is not a bad book. I feel almost guilty rating the story so low but it feels like a tired effort on the author’s part with recycled stories with less relatable characters. Unlike Martin or Matthias or characters in previous books, Mariel lacks the development or complexity to actually make you feel invested in her or her quest. Characters are highlighted by their annoying attributes (a hare with a horrible high pitched laugh, petulant children, Mariel’s temper and short sightedness, yet another rat who loses his mind because of weird visions, etc) and lack the depth of previous characters. Oh and the songs…. The damn songs… the story is not well served by breaking into irritatingly long musical numbers that do nothing to develop the story.
I don’t regret listening to this, but if you’re expecting it to hold up to the preceding redwall books your money may be better spent elsewhere.

Too much drama
The only reason I gave it four stars was because I at least, think it has too much drama. I think it has too many battles and that the battles could have been a little more strategic. I would have liked more planning and more jokes, like in the rest of the books.

Always loved these books. Having them read to me was even better! A very versatile and talented cast, I was surprised to learn how many people voiced multiple characters, unbeknownst to me. Brian Jacques narrating was also very warm and comforting. It was really nice to hear music put to the songs and poems scattered throughout the book to boot!

I love these audiobooks. They really ad something extra to the story. The book is done with a full cast by the author himself. You hear all the types and accents as they are meant to be.
One minus point is that this book is not split into the chapters of the book but in chapters of around 1 hour.

Every child should read the Redwall Series.
What made the experience of listening to Mariel of Redwall the most enjoyable?
I have read and followed the Redwall series since I was young. Each book brings you new characters, and old ones too. By reading the series you become part of the characters lives and understand the history behind the magnificent Abbey of Redwall.
What did you like best about this story?
I love the character of Mariel "Gullwacker". She is a fun character, courageous, a good friend and companion, and a role model to all (both young and old).
Which character – as performed by Brian Jacques and a full cast – was your favourite?
There is no one particular character who could be your favourite. Although the hairs and their war cry make it difficult to remember all characters are important.
Any additional comments?
Read the series.
