Story
Marine First Lieutenant Jacob Brown is bored. For months he's been sitting around on an alien planet, waiting for command to recall his scout team so they could rest and be re-outfitted. When command finally does reach out, however, it isn't to order Obsidian home for some much needed r&r. Instead, they are being reactivated and sent out into the contested space of the recently conquered Eshquarian Empire to track down a single Terran cruiser called the Eagle's Talon.

But everyone wants what Dr. Angel Cortez has found. Because beneath the dirt and stone, an ancient mystery lies, a secret history, and a warning of an implacable alien enemy. Story
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Story
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Publisher's Summary
Aliens exist...and, as it turns out, most of them aren’t that friendly. Jacob Brown wasn’t even born yet the first time they attacked Earth. He was only 14 the second time it happened.
When Earth finally came together and fielded its first spaceborne military, Jacob didn’t hesitate to volunteer. Serving aboard a mighty starship, he’d be able to defend his planet - and his family - when, inevitably, they came again.
Just as he’s about to graduate training, however, Jacob is approached by an officer from Naval Special Operation Command and given a choice: volunteer for a risky mission to a dangerous, lawless world or give up his dream of serving in the military and go home. He has no idea why he’s being singled out in such an unusual manner, but now, it's either agree to their demands or give up his dream of being on a starship.
Soon, getting his career back on the right track will be the least of his concerns when it seems like everyone - and everything - he meets is trying to kill him. When he stumbles upon a secret most people on Earth are blissfully unaware of, he realizes it's not just the aliens he needs to be worried about.

Same pacing and feel as OF. Chapter 11 and chapter 12 were out of order in my app, this needs fixing. When narrator says chapter 12 skip forward one to get chapter 11 then skip back.

Shallow story line
I felt this book had a very shallow story line. I will try not to give spoilers. The main character has no field experience at beginning is given command of an elite scout team...unrealistic. Betrayals on elite scout team are shrugged off by team members... unrealistic.

Nailed it.
Once again Josh nails it. If you love OF or even if you don’t, get this book even if you’ve never listened to OF before. I was as always skeptical. My fear was that this book would be some crappy side trip. Josh has done a great job taking earths space exploration and military in a new direction. I feel like he could write another 10 books just following this story line. I’m excited to see what the story goes. It could go several directions. Let’s see what he does.

Issues !?
Chapters are numbered incorrectly along with being in the wrong order. There may even be some missing.
This is really bad and IMO this version needs to be removed from the site while it gets fixed.
*EDIT*
Seems like chapters have been placed in the correct order now. -- skimmed thru a new download quickly.
They are though still listed incorrectly for example Chapter 10 is listed as chapter 13 and so on, while not a big issue it seems sloppy to me.
On the whole I found the book/story to be middling whilst compared to Joshua Dalzelle's other books in this universe.

Quality of a 6th Grade English Project
The narrator does a great job of differentiating characters and has an energetic, urgent tone that deserves better material.
I usually finish things, even when they aren't great. I could not finish this book. The aliens were neat & the Universe he created had potential, but the characters were all so flat. There was no emotional depth and the conversation were all expositionary, bluntly stating what they were feeling or thinking, giving out a lot of "I shouldn't be telling you this but.... [it's a lazy way to move the story along quickly]" facts, showing a profound lack of understanding about human interactions, emotions, the building of trust & relationships-- especially in the military. I expect this quality of writing from a 6th grader who just wants to go on a space adventure and maybe work out some Daddy issues, but not a professional author.

Wonderful Surprise! Excellent Book.
Every now and then I get lucky and find a book, written by an author I've never heard of, and the book hits a home run. If you are aware of Dalzelle's "Omega Force" books (I've not listened to these YET) you already know the quality of author and storyteller he is. If not, and you like military sci-fi books, BUY THIS NOW!!! LOL.
Not only was this a fantastic listen with excellently written characters and a quickly moving storyline, but the narration was fantastic. Paul Heitsch does a great job with characters but keeps you engaged all the way through.
BUY THIS BOOK! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Generally enjoyed
A good formulaic book that I enjoyed apart from the almost constant and generally pointless swearing. Really good storytellers rarely need it in these quantities if at all. It annoyed me in the generally much more enjoyable Black Fleet. but Mr Dalzelle seems more and more dependent on it. A shame for me at least. I won't be trying Omega Force or likely listening to more of these as a consequence.

Next generation
At the end of the book the author explains how and why he wrote this follow on from the Omega series. His words echoed my own thoughts as I listened to him. This book was exceptional and unlike his father the hero blunders through to victory and his colleagues get their own starring role without being super heros. Now I can look forward to both sets of books coming out and hope Josh ‘s fingers remain active!
