Publisher's Summary
In Paris, an elderly man is assassinated as he takes his morning walk. In the war-torn cities of Syria, government forces wage a bloody war against their own people. The Russians are propping up the government, the French are backing one rebel fraction and the British are backing another. And in north Africa, young SAS trooper Jamie Truman is coming to the end of a gruelling tour of duty, or so he thinks.
Jamie has a new mission. An MI6 agent needs to make contact with Syrian rebel forces, and also with the private military contractors who are - unofficially - training this rebel faction as it struggles to bring down their government and establish a new regime that will be favourable to British business interests. As they travel deep into rebel heartland, Jamie will learn who the masters of war, the men who call the shots, really are. As Jamie finds himself sucked into the murky orbit of the private military, he discovers a world where death is dispensed by the highest bidder and individuals will betray anybody if the price is right. And where a secret lurks that will change the course of Jamie's own life, however long that might last...

Struggled to get through it
I’m normally a fan of Ryan’s other media and work as a technical advisor. He has proven himself as a member of the SAS so I thought I’d give his book a try as I am a huge fan of authors such as Clancy, Thor, Flynn, and Taylor. This book, however, was gruesome for the sake of being gruesome.
Plot was intriguing but none of the characters were likeable. While I expected some gritty action etc, there are graphic instances of torture, rape, and murder of women and children that I felt were not necessary for the plot. Again I am all for realistic violence and the portrayal of the morale “grey” area, but only if it is good for plot development.
It wasn’t a horrible book, I felt it just tries too hard.

Wow! I can't get enough of these books!
These are things WE THE PEOPLE need to hear. Everything about what happens when WARS happen. Thank you for not holding back - whether written as a novel or memoir- the events of war, and what has been told here - do happen, and ARE happening. May we work harder to keep our fellow citizens and countrymen and women away from things like this. And hopefully aide workers, etc, will do their research before going abroad. Whatever country you reside in has just as much need for those same services!

Well...what an intriguing 'listen'.....
Slow to start off with as Ryan sets the story out and ultimately who his new character 'Danny Black' and his unknown (to him) background. Like any Ryan/McNab book of recent times, the devil is in the detail. Only those who have actually been in these situations can provide such detail as this. I look forward to hearing more about Black and I'm sure it's not the last we'll hear of Buckingham without spoiling it for everyone that hasn't partaken as yet.
Back to traditional paper for Hunter Killer, hopefully have it completed just in time for Hellfire (book 3). It's been a while since I've had the time to catch up on Ryan and McNab books, but they couldn't be closer to where I'm right now. 😉

There was no logic to my preconception and ultimately proved wrong. Like the book, lots of action, easy to listen to despite the readers characterisation which I personally didn't need.

The Best So Far
Where does Masters of War rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is a book that will keep you from turning it off. The storyline is terrific and the first suspense of the story keeps you glued to the book throughout
What other book might you compare Masters of War to, and why?
One does not come to mind however, And McNabb comes closest to the scenarios.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Today's truthful threat to society
Any additional comments?
Found this to be one of the most captivating books to listen too recently.

A good Chris Ryan book not for the faint hearted
A good story and plot. The war crimes and choice of victims are quite disturbing and I'm sure the aim of it is to be a lot more shocking then the usual bullet to the brain descriptions you typically find. All in all it was good.

Had to Finish it in One Day
What a brilliant example of the storyteller's craft! It just keeps ratcheting up the stakes and there's at least one brilliant twist. There's also a really ingenious structure to the whole thing - most of the threads are ingeniously tied up by the end, but just enough is left open to make you REALLY want to read the next one in the series.
The key ingredient of this book is the main character. He hooks you in because he has failings - he has to struggle with himself and he makes mistakes, all of which gives rise to huge amounts of tension.
The performance really contributes to the sense of tension - I will never forget the main villain's voice. Brrr!

violence. excitement. escapism for boys.
Would you listen to Masters of War again? Why?
Yes because its enjoyable
If you’ve listened to books by Chris Ryan before, how does this one compare?
This is the first audio book by Chris Ryan but the narrator added to a classic Ryan story
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Various good scenes but those in the torture chamber were particularly engaging
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Special Forces go head to head with terrorists to meet the needs of their political masters and all hell breaks out.
Any additional comments?
The story pushes the boundaries tobthe point where its almost unbelievable and crazy. The twist at the end spoilt the whole and was a bit stupid. But overall it was very enjoyable as long as you don't mind bad language and violence. Good fun.

Reasonable story but had some ridiculous parts. Ie 7.62 rounds in an Apache chain gun, stops to have a conversation in the middle of a fire fight. The list does go on. All in all it kept me entertained and I will listen to the next one in the series.
