Story
For Riley Oh, life as the Godrealm's last fallen star is not all it's cracked up to be. Her new divine heritage doesn't even come with cool magical powers, half of her friends and family (including her parents) can't remember her, and to top it all off, the entire Gom clan is mad at her for killing the Cave Bear Goddess and stripping away their healing abilities. But when their anger boils over and a group of witches curse Riley's home, she knows it's up to her to restore magic back to her clan—even if it means sneaking into the Spiritrealm. Luckily, Riley has some backup.

By: Katherine Arden
Publisher's Summary
In this highly anticipated contemporary fantasy, 12-year-old Maya’s search for her missing father puts her at the center of a battle between our world, the Orishas, and the mysterious and sinister Dark world. Perfect for fans of Aru Shah and the End of Time and The Serpent’s Secret.
Twelve-year-old Maya is the only one in her South Side Chicago neighborhood who witnesses weird occurrences like werehyenas stalking the streets at night and a scary man made of shadows plaguing her dreams. Her friends try to find an explanation - perhaps a ghost uprising or a lunchroom experiment gone awry. But to Maya, it sounds like something from one of Papa’s stories or her favorite comics.
When Papa goes missing, Maya is thrust into a world both strange and familiar as she uncovers the truth. Her father is the guardian of the veil between our world and the Dark - where an army led by the Lord of Shadows, the man from Maya’s nightmares, awaits. Maya herself is a godling, half orisha and half human, and her neighborhood is a safe haven. But now that the veil is failing, the Lord of Shadows is determined to destroy the human world and it’s up to Maya to stop him. She just hopes she can do it in time to attend Comic-Con before summer’s over.

Struggled to finish
I really wanted to like this book , but I struggled to stay interested in the story despite wanting to learn more about this religion. There are a number of places in the text where rhe narration is off, like saying that Papa had panic in his voice but using a completely calm tone and verbalization. The story also has too many tangential thoughts from Maya or sassy quips in the wrong places.
It may be that I (an adult) am not the target audience and that the target audience. I could imagine a context in which the target (13 yo girls?) would find the tangential thoughts, sass, insecurity-followed-by-self-affirmation, and silliness of the protagonist appealing.
