Publisher's Summary

Level, conquer, build.

Right as the world comes to an end, Devon is presented with an opportunity to escape Earth's demise. A most unusual benefactor grants him an opportunity at a new life in a land of magical cards, mythical creatures, and unique pedestals to manage his progress.

Devon becomes a coveted dual mage, capable of harnessing the power of wind and ice. While he thinks his new abilities will make life easy, integration proves tough. He has a dentist as a sidekick, a land hydra as a pet, and brooding rage begging to be released. He'll battle dungeons, infestations, and monstrous beasts to claim his own slice of the land to call home. A place to become: the mayor of Mythos.

DNF

I started with a list of what I found nonsensical or utterly absurd about this story, but it got too long for me to include in one review.

Ultimately, this story's biggest sin is the atrocious dialogue. Particularly from Devon. Real people don't speak or even act like that. When he started verbally psycho analysing himself to an over eager woman about how terrible he was with relationships, I couldn't handle the cringe anymore.

His reaction to this utterly bizarre world and his situation - or lack thereof - to the boring combat and magic system, there was nothing to keep me going through the painfully uncomfortable protagonist.

This was... really bad. I cannot recommend.

Good story ruined by setting needing CW

the story is pretty good, the mechanics are interesting, but the sexism is rampant in the writing, the MC and the setting.

The world the MC is sent to is just chock full of slavery, rape, and mind control. and while thankfully there are no rape scenes, it's talked about and implyed a lot. like, exponentially more than the stereotypical fantasy story. enough that it ruined most of the rest of the plot. and while the MC tries to help, becoming a slaver to fund an orphanage/army is an upsetting way to do it, especially when the story isn't meant to be a "villian" MC.

Webtoon ish

This seems to be written like a Korean Webtoon. The MC is a total social idiot, he talks down to people at every turn, he thinks he knows what is best only being in a new world a couple weeks. He even gets carried in his first dungeon and he is still talking crap to people that are HELPING him. The ancients tell him how freaking big this world is, but secondary characters in this one little town of this HUGE world insist this is the way of the world, this is the way things are done. So our super smart MC accepts that, and decides not to go adventuring outside that far and leave this craptastic little town behind.

Not a fan of the magic system

But that's because I don't like card based systems. The story was enjoyable, and the performance was well done. I would like to see book 2

Fun story with just enough edginess and soft touch

Gotta love Kate and her absolutely adorable Hydra Waddle. Hope to see more of her antics in the next entry.

Enjoyed this

I really did enjoy this book even if it did leave on a cliff hanger. (LOL)

The narration team was great. It was nice to have a variety of voices.

I read a review by another and if I had listened to that review I would not have purchased this. Don't be foed by the MC and his ability to know his own flaws, especially his flaws when it comes to relationships. If you were me you would not be disappointed with this book.

He did it again...dude give my wallet a rest!

I expected to like this audiobook but...WOW! I'm an older guy so I watched my kids play with card systems and I watched some cartoons with card systems. I never expected to get caught up in a book with a card system. So, like a good dad I told my (now grown) kids about this book and one of them read it and is now hounding the other 2 to read it. I was going to lend it to them, but they wanted to kinda book club read it and I got the audiobook bill. Me and my big mouth, Han Yang and his well-written, excellently narrated audiobooks and my poor wallet.

Introducing my kids to this author's book is the best endorsement that I can give. Buy with confidence and enjoy the journey. I'm waiting on the next audiobook and I'm not telling my kids about it this time.

Good listen, can't wait for the next

Solid listen with all the basics

Soft litrpg element and base building with simple magic. Mainly focused on story and characters. Good pacing with little to no drag.

Enjoyed and would recommend
