Publisher's Summary

New York Times bestselling author Jude Deveraux has crafted an inspiring family saga that spans generations as she tells the story of two headstrong sisters who are bound by tradition but long to forge their own path.

It's 1972 and times are changing. In the small farming community of Mason, Kansas, Vera and Kelly Exton are known for their ambitions. Vera is an activist who wants to join her boyfriend in the Peace Corps. But she is doing her duty caring for her widowed mother and younger sister until Kelly is firmly established. Kelly is studying to become a veterinarian. She plans to marry her childhood sweetheart and eventually take over his father's veterinary practice.

But it's a tumultuous time and neither sister is entirely happy with the path that's been laid out for her. As each evaluates her options, everything shifts. Do you do what's right for yourself or what others want? By having the courage to follow their hearts, these women will change lives for the better and the effects will be felt by the generations that follow. Meant to Be delivers an emotional, smart, funny and wise lesson about the importance of being true to yourself.

Just wonderful

This is a wonderful book. The descriptions of the people, surroundings, and events make you feel that you are they in the scene witnessing it all. The last chapter is a tear producer. To reiterate, this is a wonderful book, a great read.

This is a hard story to follow. I’m really disappointed in this book.

This is a slow moving story, I expected better from the authors. I want to trade this back. It’s not worth my credit!

Too many storylines and lots of weird relationship paths.

I usually love Jude Deaveraux books. This one had too many story lines it was hard to fall in love with any of the characters and I am a bit bothered by the relationships where sisters trade boyfriends or where cousins almost marry. (Granted they didn’t know they were related but...the whole thing was odd. I also don’t find cheating an act of love for whatever reason. Very disappointed.

New Summary needed

I would recommend this book. It’s the summary that threw me. It’s not about the 2 sisters. It’s about each sister and their lives. Then it’s about another family member. Finally the last family member. It’s basically 3 books that cannot be read separately. If the summary had been honest about what to expect, I would have liked it a lot more.

Exactly the stuff we're made of ...

It's why we read, it's the stuff we're made of, it's penned by a master who's not in a hurry. It's life.
The storyline here moves as much as the rhythm of our days; too fast when the days are good and too slow when they aren't.
Deveraux has a real gift. She writes the best part of the minutes in our living that are worth the remembering.
As you ponder the paths of people who differ you'll find yourself pondering what you'd do or how best you'd respond to each situation and person. Your heart will pound if you let it. And 'stupid' will come to mind here and there. You will not want the book to end and much as myself you may turn the arrow backwards just to make sure you didn't miss something.
Fun, beautifully paced and thoroughly written for the story lover within.
Content.

This story was very disjointed and the characters were poorly developed and very difficult to relate to.

Enjoyable story

I enjoyed the story but was distracted by the narrator's attempt to speak an Hispanic accent. I do wonder if there will be a follow-up. I like stories that follow multiple generations.
