For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park. We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs wag their tails, but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts-and how much can we know and understand? Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs' lives the best they can possibly be.

Story
Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

Your book changed my way of interacting with dogs
Listened to your Audio Book. Game changer for me. We had to put my dog down at 12 months after violently attacking my wife. I thought I’d done everything right. Training, training, and more training. The best food. Cadillac health insurance. And tons of love. There was no explanation until now. After time, other resources bust most significantly listening to your book, I now know that the fault was with me. I’d done what I thought was my best. I’d only applied the “L” of LEGS and did not take into consideration the rest. Thank you!

way too much stereotyping
This book contains some good information. you should consider the entire dog and her LEGS (learning, environment, genetics, self) model is a good one. But her over generalization of groups of breeds is rife with misinformation. It can be best summed up by her statement that birds cannot be taught to swim. aside from the obvious sea and shore birds, ducks, geese and penquins that are gifted swimmers, other birds including ospreys and eagles are also capable of swimming. she takes the same broad brush to groups of dogs claiming to breeds are ro.antic home bodies that don't enjoy exercise in spite of the fact that many toy breeds excell at athletic sports such as agility, barn hunt and flyball. she makes similar sweeping statements about every "group" of dog breed she talks about.

A dog's breed does NOT define behavior
While some aspects of this audiobook are interesting and useful, the general concept of looking at your dog's "genetics" is simply ridiculous. A dog breed that was meant to do races can run faster, a dog breed that was meant to sniff and find prey can sniff better, but these are physical aspects and don't define what your dog needs as dogs are individuals and taking 2 puppies from the same kennel will show you some behavioral similarities, but one might love to take long walks at a slow pace and the other one likes to participate in agility activities. Dogs are not unlike humans. Following the arguments from this book would mean that if a (human) family had a top athlete among them, the other family members must be top athletes as well and stress out if they can't do sports, because they have the physical capacities. Sure, I 100% agree that pugs have different needs than great Danes, but those differences are based on physical traits and not what the breed was meant to be. The the "self" part of "LEGS"... *SELF* is not only medical conditions or traumatizing events or "character quirks", but everything that happens to the dog and what we call personality. I have seen dogs from the same kennel, the breed designed to trace and hunt, one dog shy and sensitive and always looking for physical contact with his human and the other dog the total opposite, wild and fearless and full of energy. And still both were happy hunting dogs, but with different needs. And although both were bread to hunt, neither of them killed the other family pets, because dogs understand the life they are thrown into, they are not pure instinct, they understand, and that's why we can teach them and each dog adapts individually. Oh, and what about mutts? Mixed breeds? Does this produce schizophrenic dogs? I doubt it.
I recommend "Canine Confidential: Why Dogs Do What They Do" as further listening.

Short book with disappointing little actual content
The first chapters of the book feel more like a self promotion or marketing brochure. What follows is a categorization of dog breeds which is easier googled than listened to in an audio book.
There are a few good points mentioned in the book but they could be summarized in a few pages.

This is no ordinary book
A really unique concept for me was introduced in this book. As I have adopted a complete mutt with terrier-like insticts I have to deal with behaviour like chasing bikes/cats/runners and also instictive fearful behaviour like barking at strangers coming towards her. As owners we need to educate ourselves so that we can understand deeper our dogs as long we have them.

Useful book for understanding all dogs
This book is great for helping people to understand the history of dogs of different breeds and what that means with regards to the way they behave. It helps to shape our expectations of them - when a terrier has been bred for generations to be a hard-hunting ratter, can we ever expect to suppress that behaviour? Moreover, should we?
This is not a book that teaches you how to train your dog - I found the few training tips rather eyebrow-raising - but nor does it pretend to be. It's more important than that, and I would suggest that the majority of dog owners would benefit from it.
