The human soul is hungry for beauty; we seek it everywhere in landscape, music, art, clothes, furniture, gardening, companionship, love, religion, and in ourselves. When we experience the Beautiful, there is a wonderful sense of homecoming; we feel fully alive. Our lives become illuminated, and behind the shudder of appearances we come to glimpse the sure form of things. On Beauty: The Invisible Embrace, Irish poet and philosopher John O'Donohue invites us to remember and to awaken the Beautiful.

Story
In The Invisible World, scholar and poet John O'Donohue recovers Celtic spirituality's original mysteries, sharing practices and beliefs that enrich Ireland and its people to this day. For the Celts all life was sacred, yet they reserved their greatest reverence not for what they could see but for what they could not. Around them they sensed an "invisible world", the great unknown from which they came and the source of eternal wonder in their lives.

In 1967 Thomas Merton traveled to Thailand, seeking to further the Buddhist-Christian dialogue that was his passion. This beloved Trappist monk and explorer of the inner life died unexpectedly on that trip but not before writing a final letter to his brothers at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky. In the letter Merton wrote that he now realized that everything he had been searching for could be found at his own hermitage, within the Christian tradition.

Author Cynthia Bourgeault investigates the imaginal realm - an energetic realm well known to the mystical traditions but often forgotten in our own times. It is invisible to the physical eye, but clearly perceptible through the eye of the heart. The imaginal realm has long been associated with the personal world of dreams, prophecy, and oracles, and it also points toward a higher vision of our human purpose that is both evolutionary and collective. Bourgeault explores both aspects of imaginal reality and tells listeners how we can cooperate more fully with its guidance in our lives.

In the modern era, Eckhart's writings have struck a chord with thinkers as diverse as Heidegger, Merton, Sartre, John Paul II, and the current Dalai Lama. He is the inspiration for the best-selling New Age author Eckhart Tolle's pen name, and his 14th-century quotes have become an online sensation. Today, a variety of Christians, as well as many Zen Buddhists, Sufi Muslims, Jewish Cabbalists, and various spiritual seekers, all claim Eckhart as their own.

Publisher's Summary
The Teachings of Meister Eckhart: An Invitation to Experience God in Every Moment
The 13th-century mystic Meister Eckhart was the most brilliant Christian scholar of his day, but he was also legendary for the way he opened listeners to the direct experience of God during his public talks. Today, his written wisdom remains alive as ever, ready to illuminate us. With Meister Eckhart's Living Wisdom, James Finley, one of today's best-known teachers of the Christian contemplative tradition, invites us into Eckhart's insights in the same way this luminary teacher delighted in sharing them - through the spoken word.
"The eye with which I see God is the eye with which God sees me."
If the Divine dwells in all things, including ourselves, then why do we experience His presence only in fleeting moments, if at all? How do we let go of the illusions that imprison us to discover direct and felt liberation - not conceptually or in the afterlife but right here and now? These were the questions that compelled Meister Eckhart to reflection, spiritual practice, and discovery.
In this in-depth learning program, James Finley guides us through teachings and meditations for bringing Meister Eckhart's wisdom into our daily lives - to find for ourselves "the indestructible joy that that transcends even death", and to experience God not as a separate being but as the loving eternal center that sustains and embraces each of us and all of creation.

Great stuff but missing links are unfortunate
I like this presentation very much, but there is a problem which people might want to know about before ordering. Early in the presentation, the author refers to links to Eckhart's writings which are on his website. Well, that website no longer has the links. I contacted the current website administrator, and that was what they told me. The links are no longer available. My overall rating would be much higher if there were functioning links to the written material.

The Author’s Profound Understanding of Eckhart’s Teachings
This is not a collage of Eckhart’s sermons and quotes. It is Dr. James Finley’s take of Eckhart. I love James Finley, his insight, his style, and his calm voice, so I enjoyed this audiobook and learned more from it than I would if I was to read Eckhart’s words directly. If you hope for raw Eckhart’s words you will be disappointed.

Very repetitive, and out of subject
This book should never have had "Meister Eckhart" in the book title; the author talks overwhelmingly more about himself, and every other eastern spirituality than actual words of Meister Eckhart (book title)
the author repeats himself over, and over, and over again; the whole book could be narrated in 15 minutes.
That's my 2 cents.

Wanted to like it
I’d like less interpretation of the original texts and more direct translation. While not an easy task, his effort to convey the underlying meaning was not effective for me. He seems to repeat the same phrases over and over as if to answer my “how come?” with “because I said so”. Now I’m thinking back to a quote in the first chapter about how you know if you’re speaking the truth, and it won’t be so much that you’re speaking it, as it is being spoken through you (paraphrasing). It did not seem to be the latter.

A wonderful book that needs a different title
I've seen other reviews that decry this book as being too much of James Finley and not enough about Meister Eckhart, and if you came here for an audio version of Eckhart's work, then this isn't for you. It could do with a different title to reflect better what the book actually is. It's a bit like picking up what you thought was tea and finding that it's coffee: it takes you a while to find that as coffee goes, it's great, it's only if you thought it was tea that it tastes odd.
It really helps to know that James Finley is not just anyone: he was for many years a spiritual directee of Thomas Merton, as well as a psychotherapist, and author in his own right, and colleague/affiliate of Richard Rohr's Centre for Action and Contemplation. This audiobook is James Finley reflecting on Meister Eckhart's work (literally: he'll read a bit of Eckhart, then say "Let's take a moment to reflect on that.") Somewhere, he says that if you read Eckhart too quickly, it just becomes "words" and you miss what he is saying. This audiobook is a way of slowing down and reflecting. The reflections, in my view, are wonderful. They're not meant to be simple explanations of what Meister Eckhart is trying to say, they are "seeds of contemplation" that grow as you listen.
It matters that Finley's voice is rich, soothing and well-recorded here, so just the experience of listening to this is a pleasure, and a form of contemplation in itself, and that I think is the idea behind the book/talk. Finley describes Eckhart's sermons as "reverberations of language in the service of the unsayable," and the same is true of these reflections. I can see myself coming back to this many many times (as I have done already since I first listened).

demanding of total attention!
Where does Meister Eckhart's Living Wisdom rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This isn't an easy exploration, but its profundity repays careful and repeated listenings. It touches on one's own most significant insights and deepens them.
What does James Finley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
James Finlay is an understanding guide whose 'presence' through his voice is reassuring and has a lyrical quality that adds to the experience. One also feels in company rather than grappling with these challenging texts alone.
Any additional comments?
In the way that a great actor who really understands a difficult or archaic play can help you to do the same, I think James Finlay's own insights help to express those of Meister Eckhart.

Divine Poverty: A released Ex-istence
The whole universe is a world out of God's eternal "inner work", means in Greek "energon"; it is not the act that God performs, it's a MUST to give itself away. The reality of a spatiotemporally closed codifications of energy-packets is an infinite arising out of God's poverty and infinite passing away into God's poverty! James Finley leads the listeners to the core of Master Eckhart's faith that understanding and infinite desire to ex-ist are already released in God's eternal Poverty, which 'i' prefer to call "Purity's eternal Love".

Invitition to embrace the works of Meister Eckhart
This was a highly enjoyable journey with James Finley through the various teachings of Meister Eckhart.
I would highly recommend a listen for those of us with the eagerness to learn more of the teachings, without getting lost in the depths of the intellect that a raw reading may result.
The closing chapters provide ample information to pursue our studies further. I'm off to visit James Finley's web site before enjoying another listen of James' dulcet tones once more.
Thanks James and sounds true recordings for a beautiful presentation.

If you could sum up Meister Eckhart's Living Wisdom in three words, what would they be?
simply coming home
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This is something I will listen to again and again and it needs, time, space and some reflection. Probably to much to do in one sitting but great!
Any additional comments?
Thank you James for passing on your wisdom and experience across psychological and spiritual healing. I think his voice and calmness in this book are great for taking some time out to reflect, participate and pay attention to what is and always was within us.
I personally found it helpful to have a teacher like this providing some guidance based on Eckharts's sermons.

Not what I was hoping for
I found James Finley very hard to follow perhaps this is for intellectuals only? I preserved but still did not know much more about Meister Eckhart’s Wisdom than when I began. It’s probably just me.
