It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Publisher's Summary
Instantly, she's plunged back into the past, to the days when she was a vulnerable, traumatized girl - trapped in foster care with the twisted woman who now sits in front of her, smiling.
Trudy claims she just wanted to see how Eve was doing. But Eve's husband, Roarke, suspects otherwise - and his suspicions prove correct when Trudy arrives at his office demanding money in exchange for keeping the ugly details of his wife's childhood a secret. Barely restraining himself, Roarke shows her the door - and makes it clear that she'd be wise to get out of New York and never bother him or his wife again.
But just a few days later, Trudy's found on the floor of her hotel room, a mess of bruises and blood.
A cop to the core, Eve is determined to solve the case, if only for the sake of Trudy's bereaved son. Unfortunately, Eve is not the only one to have suffered at this woman's hands, and she and Roarke will follow a circuitous, dangerous path to find out who turned this victimizer into a victim.

Christmas Eve
I am a big fan of the "In Death" series, and this is one of my favorites. Three reasons why:
1. There are no gruesome serial murders; one of my few complaints with this series is that too many of the plots hinge on serial killers. Motivations for the murders here are straightforward.
2. We learn more about Eve's tragic back story and see a new, vulnerable, and totally believable side to her character.
3. We get to attend Eve and Roarke's Christmas gala, and watch amused as the socially challenged Eve helps with the arrangements for "this .... thing .... tonight." ("It's called a party," the patient Roarke responds.)
All in all, a great way for fans of Eve, Roarke, and friends to get into the holiday spirit!

first audio JD Robb
I've really enjoyed reading JD Robb's In Death series. I decided to listen to this one as I had a ridiculous amount of housework to do that I couldn't put off while I curled up with a good book. I enjoyed the listen. The reader does a good job with voices, accents, etc. Many of the characters didn't sound as I expected. Peabody is far more goofy in the audio and McNab is so very dorky. I'd also love Roarke's voice to be more manly. But she does a fantastic job with the accent and these mild concerns didn't stop me from ordering Kindred In Death, the newest JD Robb, from audible. The second listen was even better as I knew what to expect re: Peabody and McNab.

Memory in Death
I chose Memory in Death because it gives quite a bit of background for Eve's younger life. The humor and deep emotional storyline keeps the reader guessing along with Dallas as to the real criminal in this case.

Memory in Death
I have grown so fond of the characters in this series I wish I could invite them over for Coffee or screamers!! For a series that the author only envisioned for a trilogy I have come to enjoy and will be devastated never to peek into Peabody, Dallas, Morris, and even Dickhead lives. If you want a thoughtful and insightful look at life these are great reads.

Important character development for Eve.
This book is important for many reasons but mostly because it reveals another formative period from Eve's troubled childhood and how she comes to terms with it when confronted. It also shows how far her character has come, and the underlying decency and courage that have always been there despite the horrors of her past. I think this one of the essential tomes in the series and is always done with an infusion of wonderful romance with Roarke and humor with her cops. Peabody and McNab were adorable in this one.

What did you love best about Memory in Death?
I enjoyed the look into Eve's past. More than just the stuff we get in every book regarding her father - but more about what happened after she was put into the system. I'd love to see more of this kind of thing in the books... and less of the stuff before she was 8.

Memory in Death brings back someone Eve rather never see again. Eve past knocks her and Rourke door ; this time asking for money. Susan Ericksen narration was remarkable. She once again deliveries an emotional and satisfying performance to a very entertaining and enjoyable In Death book.

JD Robb's Eve Dallas is always great
I don't think I've ever been disappointed by a JD Robb / Eve Dallas book, and this one is no exception!! If you haven't indulged before, I highly recommend this series. If you can start from book 1, that's ideal; but you can jump in anywhere and have an enjoyable experience. She does make reference to previous incidents throughout the series; but you can gloss over those and the story will still make sense.

Well done.
Well done storyline, characters, narration. This is one of the stories in the series that I remember. The simple, everyday caring woman facade that covered the evil, ego & vindictiveness is chilling. We've most of us met someone like this and, if we're smart, we identify the wrongness and RUN!

Brilliantly drawn foster mother from hell
I find this one hard to come back to because the character of Trudi, the manipulative foster mother, is just so awful. But at the same time she is a masterly creation and quite compelling. And Eve's sucker-punched response is convincing too.
Not the strongest of her plots, but well written and very well read, with the usual good combo of humour and drama.
