In this revolutionary audiobook, Dr. Lisa Mosconi, director of the Women's Brain Initiative at Weill Cornell Medical College, provides women with the first plan to address the unique risks of the female brain. Until now, medical research has focused on "bikini medicine", assuming that women are essentially men with breasts and tubes. Yet women are far more likely than men to suffer from anxiety, depression, migraines, brain injuries, and strokes. They are also twice as likely to end their lives suffering from Alzheimer's disease, even when their longer lifespans are taken into account.

If so, you may be experiencing symptoms of premenopause. Even if you're a decade or more away from menopause, your hormones may already be out of balance, usually caused by an excess of estrogen and a deficiency of progesterone, say the authors of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause.

In this revolutionary work - a landmark that signals the true beginning of feminist medicine - a doctor, a philosopher, and a scientist prove that by postponing marriage and motherhood, women have accelerated the aging process, resulting in earlier menopause and, ultimately for thousands, earlier death. In Sex, Lies, and Menopause, they offer strong evidence that the use of synthetic hormones leads to cancer and advise women to turn to natural hormone-replacement therapy to help them elevate their estrogen level for greater energy, libido, and intellectual capacity.

Publisher's Summary
An authoritative guide to understanding and navigating the hormonal changes and health issues women experience in midlife and beyond, from one of the leading medical experts in the field.
The physical changes that occur after women turn 40 are unavoidable - and can be unnerving. Menopause affects every aspect of life, from sex and sleep to mood and mental clarity to weight and body temperature. While there are a number of resources available, many are confusing and contradictory. Now, Manhattan gynecologist Dr. Tara Allmen, an experienced, nationally board-certified menopause practitioner and the recipient of the 2015 Doctor's Choice National Award for Obstetrics & Gynecology, shares her knowledge to help women be their happiest and healthiest and turn this challenging time into an exciting one.
Written in her effervescent yet assured voice, Menopause Confidential provides simple strategies and cutting-edge information on:
- Hormonal changes and the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause
- The health risks associated with midlife - from cutting through the conflicting opinions and advice about health screenings (do I really need a colonoscopy? How often should I get a mammogram?) to common medical conditions, such as osteoporosis
- Various remedies, both allopathic and natural, to combat symptoms and empower women to make the best choices for their individual needs
- Practical tips and resources for mitigating the effects of menopause
Fifty-one-year-old Dr. Allmen knows firsthand what women are going through and shares stories of her own personal travails and solutions. Women can't turn back the clock, but they can take control of their health and flourish in midlife. Menopause Confidential encourages them to be informed, be proactive, and be their greatest selves.

Read this book!
This is the first book I've reviewed. I did my research before deciding to read this particular book on menopause and women's health. I liked that Dr. Allmen is a practicing physician and has studied menopause specifically for many years. I had already been to several doctors about my premature menopause symptoms and was not happy with the options I was given. After reading this book, I decided to become an actual patient of Dr. Allmen. I thought the treatments she outlined in her book were based on extensive research and at times contradicted what other Gynecologists had told me in the past. It was refreshing to see that there are other treatment options out there for me. It's unfortunate though that most women I know are unaware of these options. I will be personally spreading the word! Lastly, I truly enjoyed Dr. Allmen's wit throughout the book. It was a great listen. I look forward to my upcoming appointment.

Not what I had hoped for
I don't have a mother I can turn to during this change of life so I am looking for the nitty gritty, 'what to expect while you're expecting' style of book. This wasn't it.
This book was more like a conversation with a friend or a marathon internet search. Perhaps that is what Dr. Allman wanted; a broad view and stereotypical explanation of terms (think 'Menopause for Dummies' style). Her views are very one sided, 'my way it the highway' approach and is sadly, over-generalized. Basically what I'm trying to say is that this book covers what you already know even if you don't have a mother to ask.
I will say that Dr. Allmen has a very pleasant voice and tries very hard to make a rather dark topic more lively with jokes peppered throughout. The biggest annoyance is the constant reference to other chapters with long, irritating titles. When you finally get to that chapter she referenced 20+ times before, the answers are not there.
The takeaways from her book: talk to your doctor, don't smoke, lose weight, eat better, exercise, lift 5lb weights, get your pap every three years, buy Neutragena/Cetaphyl skin care products, embrace your grey hairs and pop estrogen after full menopause.

Menopause Confidential: Priceless!
What made the experience of listening to Menopause Confidential the most enjoyable?
I first bought this book exactly one week ago on Audible.com. I am now finished with the book. It is bittersweet. What will I listen to next? This book has been SO informative! It has answered all my questions and more. I am at the beginning of my peri menopausal journey so I plan on listening to this book again in a couple of years as I progress through this phase of life. Every topic is covered from the inside out and everything in between. I highly recommend this book no matter where you are in this journey. Plus, Dr. Allmen is there for you! I had posted a question on her blog. Within hours she emailed me to ask for my phone number. Once I gave her my phone number, she called me within 2 hours and gave me personal advice. I appreciate her dedication to her career of helping women in their midlife health.

There is a solution to midlife malaise. HRT is safe!
I loved that this book debunked all my reservations about HRT with scientifically sound reviews of past studies that were misleading.
I was astounded by the benefits of estrogen (heart, brain, bone, hair/nails and sexual desire/functioning).
The delivery was just the right amount of science empathy and new information, leaving me with excitement and an urgent mission to take charge of my optimal health.
A mild mannered friend nearly insisted everyone of “the girls” read Hormone Confidential. I can’t recommend this book enough - a must read for women 40ish to 60ish and good info for everyone.

As another reviewer said, this book is very self promoting and I felt it really lacked impactful advice in the assistance of my perimenopause.
