Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. Charlie7 is the progenitor of a mechanical race he built from the ashes of a dead world - Earth. He is a robot of leisure and idle political meddling - a retirement well-earned. Or he was, until a human girl named Eve was dropped in his lap. Geneticists have restored Earth’s biome and begun repopulation. But primate cloning is in its infancy; human cloning is banned. Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

One of the best books I've listened to
- By Joel on 01-06-20
Publisher's Summary
Almighty Ra looks down not from one sun but from all!
Someone has taken an ancient Earth religion and re-branded it for the 26th century. Multi-stellar, multispecies, the Cult of Ra has an answer for everything....
Except a wizard who's sick of them preying on innocent people.
Sunshine of Your Cult (Book 5)
Still getting used to life without magic, Esper accepts a mission that seems easy enough on the surface. An actor is searching for a kidnapped co-worker. Just two little problems with that. The actor seems intent on tagging along, offering questionable "help" along the way. And his co-star is in the clutches of a deadly cult.
Walk Like a Magician (Book 6)
Now on a crusade to pull the Cult of Ra out of the galaxy by the roots, Esper and company find a arms manufacturer secretly funding the cult. But when taking on such a formidable foe without magic proves too much, Esper takes drastic measures to even the odds.
Hotel Caledonia (Book 7)
This could be the break Esper has been waiting for. A mysterious whistle-blower looks to take down the Cult of Ra from the inside. He's willing to tell Esper everything. Her rendezvous aboard a luxury cruise ship goes horribly wrong when she meets her contact - at the scene of his murder.
Eye of the Pharaoh (Book 8)
The beating heart of the Cult of Ra is its founder, the self-styled pharaoh Ramesses XIII. And Esper knows where to find him. The cult flagship will be in orbit of a planet whose populace has converted to their religion. So, all Esper and her friends have to do is get to a planet full of zealots, sneak about their most powerful warship, and depose the pharaoh amid his most trusted guards and wizards.
And they know Esper is coming.

What can I say, another great one by J.S. Morin
If you don't know about the black ocean series. Get the Mission Pack 1-16.5 Black Ocean Mobius missions. Once you listen to that get Black Ocean Astral Prime Mission pack 1-4. Then get Black Ocean Mercy for hire missing 1-4 then 5-8.
Way worth the money and time IMO. I loved em all and only wish I could forget about them so I could listen to them all over again. Unfortunately I liked them so much they will stick with me for a long time. Ill need to wait like 10 years before they will be fresh enough to go through the series again.
I have read more science fiction and fantasy books then I can count literally in the thousands. These are definitely some of the best. They have a little of everything some comedy, suspense, mystery, science, magic, light sex and just plain fun. The narrator keeps everything light and upbeat and does a really good job of keeping character voices unique.

Better, now that Mercy is building her Scooby gang
1st thing 1st: if you want a Mercy for Hire pack, go with the omnibus, containing missions 1-16 for 1 credit. Otherwise, wait for a sale to get each of the 4 mission 4 packs. If bought individually, I recommend this pack 2 (missions 5-8), that can mostly stand alone, over pack 1. This spinoff is really best appreciated, however, having first listened to the Black Ocean omnibus (a zanier Firefly space opera…with wizards).
I enjoyed the 80hr Black Ocean omnibus, but found missions 1-4 of Mercy for Hire spinoff to be more of a drag. A lot of this is because we lost the Mobius crew and had only wizard-lite Esper and megadog Kubu for most of those books. Thankfully, this pack, with missions 5-8 expands the new crew to include wizard apprentice (and juvenile delinquent) Tiffany, dim movie star Wesley Wesley (or, is he?!), and eventually a new group of misfits that provide much better opportunities for fun space operatic action in later missions. My favorite mission was no 7 (Hotel Caledonia) that was a mix of murder mystery in a Flotsam Paradise / Fifth Element cruise setting.
The Mercy series has more F-bombs than Black Ocean, and a slightly more prominent LGBTQ thread, although all hankypanky fades to black at the first kiss. All in all, a good escapist popcorn listen between meatier series.

Not as Enjoyable as Mission Pack 1
For whatever reason I did not enjoy this one as much as Mission Pack 1. In the first couple of missions Ester turns into a boring nag, the person who is always on everyone's case about their poor behavior, which she never was before. The second two missions are a bit more fun than the first two. It's still decent escapist fun.

Fun for the Most Part
80% amusing and 20% crap.
The 80% parts are when Esper bothers being Esper, Kubu is goofy yet sobering, Tiffany is a teenage apprentice, Wesley squared is a new dynamic, and the mission titles are grand.
The 20% negative is the fact the biggest obstacle for the protagonists is Esper’s hemming & hawing to the point people she cares about end up in mortal danger. The plots would be cake walks without the repetitive indecision. When the outcome is always Esper chooses to be Esper, abracadabra she wins, the inner struggle becomes irrelevant and the plots suffer as a result. That part of her character development was better in Mission Pack 1.
Mikael Naramore continues to carry more than his fair share while delivering Black Ocean to the masses. Without a doubt he earns a semi-patented thumbs up.

Fantastic Follow-On
The Mercy for Hire stories are a great continuation of the Black Ocean series. Full or action, plot twists, and thoughtful insights, they wind through a series of adventures. The plot connection to the Möbius stories ties the two series firmly together. Don’t miss the bonus at the end of Mission Pack Two!

The black ocean series of books are the best I’ve read .... ever !!!
Again this series lived up to my expectations, it was great to find out how characters that broke off from galaxy outlaws ended up and how there own stories progressed... I have one more part of the black ocean series to read and I’m already wishing there were more to come J.S.Morin and Mikael Naramore have set a standard so high for me with writing and narration, it’s going to be hard to enjoy any other books as much as I have these... thank you to them both.

Holy F-balls!!
Esper is kicking butt and doling out mercy at the same time. A dramatic and lol comedically great story for all fans of Esper. Whilst the Convocation gets its pound of flesh out of her, Esper gains two more members of her motley crew. One, Wesley Wesley a 150kgs of muscle but no brains and Ilsa, a new lover that can handle her tech for her, if she can keep out of trouble herself that is. Together the band of five start off doing a missing persons gig and end up taking out a god and a trumped up wizard! But can Esper stave off the horny hands of the Poet Fleet's rebuffed admiral? Oh, and she needs a ship to call home, but an Earth Navy frigate; sure, why not? Tiffany adds real meat to the mission and the Mobius swoops in to help. But what is Kubu doing in a backpack?! Well worth the terras, or at least a credit. Lol fun!

Not quite mobius good but still good
this mission pack is much better than mission pack 1. the added character of Wesley Wesley added the much needed humor which was missing from missions 1 - 4. the little meat up with the mobius crew brought some nostalgia and smiles as it was nice to hear from Carl Ramsey again. I am now moving on to astral prime but am tempted to re listen to the 16 mobius missions again.

outstanding
Well written, well read, I just wish it was ten times longer; but if it was then it wouldn't be what it is.

Always a good story
All the Black Ocean stories are a great listen, and I'm looking forward to more.
