Story
Cedric the Brown is a wizard with a dark past. In an effort to make amends, he hides in plain sight among the residents of a space station he once nearly destroyed. Cut adrift by a bankrupt megacorp, the mobile mining station sets off to uncharted space in a desperate attempt to scrape by. What they stumbled onto would change the course of the galaxy. A planet. A lost alien race. A secret that will lead to all-out war. How will a station filled with scoundrels and crewed by former miners handle being the fulcrum of history?

Cadmus Errol is the greatest inventor that Tellurak has ever known. His clockwork graces the spires of cities across the world. Yet in another, darker world, he lives the life of a slave. There, humanity is held underfoot, bound in service to the victors of a war fought untold generations ago. It will take all the wits and resources of the best that humanity can muster to break that hold. Can Cadmus Errol, the Mad Tinker, be the one to free them all? Or will his daughter take a shortcut through dangerous science to wipe out humanities oppressors? The Twinborn Chronicles: War of 3 Worlds is an epic fantasy series with multiple point of view characters. If you love steampunk gadgetry, heroes who get their hands dirty, and a DIY heroine, this series is for you!

The Mobius is a cobbled-together ship with a matching crew. Captain Carl Ramsey is an ex-Earth Navy pilot whose crew won't let him fly his own ship. The pilot is his ex-wife, the mechanic is a drunk, and the chief of security is from a predatory species. Instead of a star-drive to travel through the astral space between worlds, the ship's wizard does it by hand.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Charlie7 is the progenitor of a mechanical race he built from the ashes of a dead world - Earth. He is a robot of leisure and idle political meddling - a retirement well-earned. Or he was, until a human girl named Eve was dropped in his lap. Geneticists have restored Earth’s biome and begun repopulation. But primate cloning is in its infancy; human cloning is banned. Far from a failed genetics experiment, Eve is brilliant, curious, and heartbreakingly naïve about her species’ history. But Eve’s creator wants her back and has a gruesome fate planned for her.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

One of the best books I've listened to

Publisher's Summary
When a hero snaps, the galaxy pays.
For years, Esper's mind has contained the knowledge of ancient demons. Ever since reading that forbidden tome, a darkness dwelt, gnawing at the edges of her sanity and wheedling to gain control. When a mission to a blockaded planet goes awry, Esper can't hold back the darkness any longer. The darkness within gains an annoying conscience and the body of a powerful wizard.
Multiple battles ensue. First, Esper must fight alongside her crew, without letting on that she's different. Now, there's an ongoing internal struggle for control, influence, and the fate of everyone Esper cares about.
Who can hold back the darkness when its main enemy takes command of the fight?
Mission 9: Ship with No Name
A plague breaks out on Meyang. Earth Navy enforces a strict blockade. No one in or out, including medical personnel. With a humanitarian crisis brewing among the quarantined rebels, Esper and her crew step in. Launching a daring rescue mission, they break the blockade to save lives.
Mission 10: No More Mr. Nice Girl
Esper isn't playing around, anymore. When her ship gets hijacked, it's time to see what a wizard can do when she's not obsessed with doing the right thing.
Mission 11: Magic's Little Helper
Tiffany feels her magical training has fallen off. With Esper preoccupied and the universe no longer listening to her demands, she turns to an illicit, magic-boosting drug for a boost.
But the worst time for Esper to discover that her apprentice is blasted on Starlight is when a team of wizard assassins is hot on her trail.
Mission 12: Mortanian Rhapsody
Something is horribly wrong with Esper. The dark powers she's tapped into have finally collected their due. Overcome by the darkness inside her, she's no longer the Esper everyone knew.
To get her back, Tiffany launches a daring mission to find one person in the galaxy who might know how to help.

I liked the Black Ocean series
But this has become contrived IMHO.
It was great for the first few "missions" but now it's just not any fun and I think the author is really pushing the limits of what's interesting and what's just filler.
I feel like every character is more interesting than Esper is and she's the MC. You're doing it wrong when everyone/thing is more interesting than your MC.

J.S. Morin, thank you for all your hard work. Everything about the Mercy For Hire audio books are addictive. Brilliant story telling with great characters and the best narration I've ever heard.
All of the Black Ocean books need to be a TV series. J.S. Morin is seriously underrated. Hopefully his vision becomes small or large screen reality.
