Publisher's Summary

A house with “personality”. One ridiculously tall leprechaun. Two nachtmares. And three geriatric defenders straight out of the retirement village.

These are my ducks, and they are not in a row.

It wasn’t until I lost everything—my home, my marriage, even my career—that I started to wonder if our “family curse” might be more than an unfortunate turn of phrase.

Now turning 45, the age at which every woman in my family dies, I need answers not only for myself, but for my two daughters. And I’ll see every specialist in the country if that’s what it takes.

But when a lifelong friend discovers a link between my strange family history and an abandoned estate, I can't pass up the opportunity to learn what happened before the death certificates started piling up.

What I find may mean it’s too late to change my fate, but that doesn’t mean I won’t die trying. If there’s a curse on our family, I’m coming for it with everything I’ve got.

Might as well make use of these raging hormones and decades of suppressed emotions while I still can....

The time for surviving is over. It’s time to start living.

If sarcasm is your love language, this new humorous paranormal women's fiction series is for you! Perfect for fans of Shannon Mayer, K.F. Breene, and Robyn Peterman. Get it now!

Loved this book!

I love reading about older women who have a second life after a certain age and this book delivers just that! The descriptions and background setting this series up was phenomenal! All the characters, both human and supernatural, have such sass and interesting quirks that make the story fun and exciting to read. The challenges these characters face by demons made for an action-packed plot that kept the story moving while introducing all the new personalities and the budding reluctant romance was just teasing enough to want you to continue on with the second book to see what will happen next. The slight cliffhanger that introduces a new character and a new adventure has me eager to read/listen to the next book!
The narration by Maria McCann was great-she brought the “Southern Charm” to life in each of the characters!.

An engaging magical mystery

~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book.~

I’m a fan of an older protagonist. Our MC is at an all time low; a family cursed to die at a certain age, going through a divorce, and broke. She has some sass, but her feelings of being inadequate make her feel pretty relatable. She's likable and very human.

I feel like I’ve read a few of the: suddenly inherit a magical house/heritage lately. And they can be fun. It serves the same purpose Isekai does by giving us a protagonist learning about the world with us. If you enjoy that kind of setup then this book delivers it with humor and excitement.

I enjoyed the sense of humor. I loved the house and the variety of characters introduced. The variety of magical creatures and the mystery about what happened in the past and how that influences what is happening now. A third of the way through the book, I was already pretty sure I’d want to grab the next book (“Midlife Magic & Medusa”) when it comes out. I look forward to the magical world building to be more fleshed out.

Narration was enjoyable. Maria McCann does an excellent job giving the characters a sense of personality with her voice.

Some quotes:

“His weakness is not yours. His failures are not yours. The fact that he let you get away only shows what a complete fool he is, which also has nothing to do with you.” (Pg 6)

“Unicorns & Horns from Around the World
The Sphinx: Solving the Riddle of You
Valkyrie & Other Female Warrior Spirits
Dragons & Dungeons - Training the Trainer
Kelpies & Kids - Not a Good Mix
Gnomes, Trolls, and Ogres - Identifying Marks & Characteristics” (Pg 190)

“I am the proprietor of a bed and breakfast. In the South. Where everyone thinks they can hide their sins by driving approximately two hours away from their home zip code. I’ll pay you a thousand dollars, in cash, if you can make me blush…” (Pg 353)

Delightful Paranormal Mystery!

Beautifully written featuring a delightful cast of characters, an Intriguing plot laced with humor and mystery and then narrated with plenty of snark and sass, Midlife Magic & Magnolias makes for a delightful listening experience! Add to that it’s truly laugh out loud funny! I think my favorite thing about this one was the characters. I LOVED the characters! They are extremely realistic and funny! Some might say characters like these can’t possibly exist! Oh but they do! I swear, these ladies could have lived in my mothers adult community! And yes, you COULD walk around in the evening and see them measuring the height of the grass! They do exist! I’m not going to go into plot details for fear of spoiling the fun for anyone. This one is fabulous good clean fun! I loved it. Five fantastic stars.

Enjoyable Midlife Paranormal Mystery

This was my first book from this author and I was pleased with the results. As an "Over 60" I find myself looking for more mature main characters and Alex was an enjoyable find. At almost 45, Alex is approaching the age all the women in her family have died at. Worried about her future, her scumbag of a husband decides to divorce her and take her for half of her life savings. Interested in finding out more about her family history in hopes of saving her life, Alex has her best friend, a genealogist, begin to research her family history. Out of nowhere, she receives information leading her to a mysterious hidden mansion. Then the fun begins as paranormal creatures appear and family mysteries begin to unravel.

This was a cute story, interesting with plenty of twists and turns. Alex is a strong heroine with alot to overcome and strong cast of supporting characters. The book is full of plenty of snarky quips and some burgeoning clean romance.

Maria McCann did an excellent job with the narration. She voiced the various characters well and they were very distinguishable. She was pleasant to listen to and I found the 11 1/2 hours went by quickly.

Definitely recommended if you are interested in a more mature heroine. I look forward to future books in this series.

Kept me engaged

The narrator was excellent, which is vital to me, and the story line was good, although it is reminiscent of Breene’s series, and nothing in this subset of the genre has lived up to that.

I only have one issue with the writing. Days seem to pass, i.e. the MC will say “I’ve been here a week” but there is no sense of days having passed. It all reads like one string of events- as if it is the same day.

But if that is my only real complaint, that’s not too shabby!

Loved it

This is the first book I have listened to by this author, and I loved it, I also loved the narration, Maria McCann did an amazing job. The combination of story and brilliant narration kept me hooked.

The story was faced paced, I laughed out loud and finished it in two days, I would of done the whole 11 hours and thirty mins in one go if it had been possible.

If this is genre you enjoy I say go for it well worth a credit.

Magical

This is the the first book by this author that I have read or listened too but it certainly won't be my last, as I will definitely be getting the rest of the books in this series. I loved it. With so many cozy paranormal stories out there, this is one of the better ones and I don't know if it was because the author went with an older heroine but it also seems more grown up. The book is filled with humour and mystery but it is not until about half way through that it truly becomes magical. The author does a good job of creating like able characters and even turns some myths on there head. Although I must admit my favourite character wasn't one of the magical ones but Alex's feisty Aunt Eleanor, who with her gun and sharp wit was a hoot. The world the author creates is not only easy to picture but is also captivating, keeping the listener hooked until the very end. Can't wait for the next book.
At 45 all the woman in Alex's family die and with her fast approaching the dreaded birthday Alex steps up her game plan, if not to help herself then to at least try to help her daughters. Specialist doctors are at a lost to explain it and so she turns to genealogy and finds an unexpected surprise. It turns out she might not be as alone as she thought. With her husband divorcing her, no job and the loss of her house, life has her traveling to an abandon mansion with a strange history and even stranger rules. Can Alex discover the connection between the mansion and her history, in order to end the curse. And in doing so her world is opened up to a whole new world, one that she never thought was possible but at what cost?
I liked the narrator. She was able to bring the characters to life by giving them each there own voice.
