Story
All Bree really wants is to bury her head in the sand somewhere in the south of France while a hot pool boy rubs lotion on her back. Instead, Bree gets blackmailed by the Council of Savannah into a job she doesn’t want—though it does take her to France. They need her to bring a witch back to Savannah for a trial that Bree is sure is a load of hooey. But not just any witch. The first one. The oldest one. The one who makes a T-rex look like he’s howling about a sore tooth.

Story
The day after my 43rd birthday, my husband announced he was trading me in - his words, not mine. The news was unwelcome at the time, but honestly? I needed a good goosing to get up and find my way to the door. So I was freed from the giant manual of expectations authored by my ex. That was the good news. The flip side was less happy. Due to living in a state not friendly to discarded wives, I was also relieved of the financial "security" I'd spent a lifetime accruing.

I had no idea how those words would change my life. Or how they’d changed my life already...until the day the most dangerous man I’ve ever met waltzed onto my farm and left us a death sentence. In an invitation. My younger brother has been chosen for the prestigious, secret magical school hidden within the folds of our mundane world. A place so dangerous, they don’t guarantee you’ll make it out alive. If he doesn't go, our entire family will be killed. It’s the same invitation my older brother received three years ago - the same place where he mysteriously died.

This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. But as a half-breed, bastard child, that isn't going to happen. I've been accused of attacking the queen, my wicked stepmother, and my life is suddenly on the line. I have only two options left to me: banishment, or training to become one of the King's Elite Guards, an Ender. Option one will kill me. My name is Rachel Sambrook, and I thought I understood the world...until I discovered the world is full of living, breathing monsters. When I teamed up with Lea, I thought we had stopped the experiments on vampire blood. All we did was open a can of wolves we had not expected. The clues we find take us halfway across the world and, to my irritation, leave us depending on two men. One, a werewolf who has his own set of secrets. And the other, a Cazador like Lea...only this one is human and more tempting than I’d like to admit.

Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

Some people are ordained for greatness. Those people usually have a lot of drama in their life. Drama I happily do without. I live in a forgotten corner of nowhere for a reason: there is safety in anonymity. I have enough problems just trying to get by. But when Kieran, a sinfully sexy demigod at the pinnacle of power, crashes into my life, suddenly my whole world is turned upside down. He’s harboring a deadly secret, one that could destroy all he holds dear. He thinks I’m the key to his salvation, and he wants me to help him claim vengeance. He also wants me with a passion.

Publisher's Summary
Good rule of thumb: Don't pick a fight with Bree O'Rylee. She might be over 40 and run with a limp, but that doesn't mean she won't track you down and drive the tip of her boot right up your...
Bree was hoping for a few days off from dealing with monsters, bad guys, or general weirdness that doesn’t fit into a human box of what is supposed to be real.
What she got was a stay in the hospital with an undead roommate and a whole new set of problems that keep rising from the grave.
But her love life is at least on track. Until it’s not. And when it goes sideways, it jumps straight into the drink and sinks to the bottom.
Now, Bree has to put her heart on the back burner as she is offered a major job hunting down the very person causing all the undead to rise. And she has two days to do it before the whole town turns into a scene from the Walking Dead.
Time to pull up your big girl panties and swig a little whiskey. Things are about to get interesting.

In the end Bree just seems pathetic
I get building tension and the realities of tough relationships, but I think the author lost me at this point. How long can she drag out the relationship or not relationship with Crash. It’s exhausting and I ended up not making it through the whole book. It seems like the goal of each installment is to leave you needing to buy the next book to get any closure. Then when it seems like things are moving forward, oops here is another stupid misunderstanding to set things back again.
At this point I wish I never started the series because where I am leaving just feels unsatisfying and like a waste of my time and money. The characters don’t really grow, you never know if anyone is being honest, and Bree has turned everything into oh do I want him, or wait maybe I want him, oh wait again, maybe I don’t want anyone. The author took a promising series and just turned the character into some that seems a little pathetic.

Lawd, stop. Forty isn't a death sentence!
I love Mayer, but for duck's sake can we have a heroine with a bit of self-esteem at this point? This isn't the Oregon trail--folks aren't living to a ripe old age of 35 and then dying of dysentery. Forty is a smarter twenty. It's time for a second marriage, second divorce, second coming, second cumming, self-pleasure, self-acceptance, and the end of second guessing one's choices at every turn.
Breena is still a sloppy, insipid, self-pitying, weepy drunk who languishes in despair and then charges headlong, with no self-reflection or "lessons learned", into action putting herself and her friends in to needless, empty danger.
Breena is the type of friend who takes an awful lot of energy and, unfortunately, it takes quite a bit of energy to listen to her continued ineptitude. FFS stop complaining about being out of shape, lumpy, bumpy, frumpy, dumpy, schlumpy, whatever. If she was my friend, we'd have to have the "Go to therapy, you're a ducking mess! Ditch your ex-husband, this is boarding on weird Stockholm syndrome. Be a bit kinder to your friends, maybe ask about their day because you're teetering into narcissism" talk.
Thank the gods I have read most of Mayer's canonical works or I would have stopped a few books back in this series. Breena is a twit.
Fortgang is an angel, as usual.

it's official as much as I want it to be Crash, I've jumped the wagon. For an ancient Fae King his maturity level is seriously almost that of a high school boy. Bree does not need that. She needs someone to let her decide what she needs and not excuses. I can't wait too see what Bree chooses to do going forward!

such an entertaining story
So much action as always with Shannon's books. I really enjoy this world. so many tqist and turns throughout this book. The relationship between Breena and Crash stresses me out lol. Breena is a fun character that may have some issues but is able to kick ass. I find myself laughing out loud often because of Breena and the gang. I was on the edge of my seat for several parts of this book. So many secrets are revealed. I really am looking forward to the next book

one of my favourite series and heroine of all time
I was so excited to get my hands on the latest installment and to find out what could possibly happen to Bree next. I decided to savour this book slowly and I absolutely loved it. The heroine is a divorced, 40 something woman that has aches and pains that even in my 30s I have, so I find the heroine Bree so very relatable. I honestly laugh, shout and roll my eyes throughout the story. What I'm not cool about is the cliff hanger ending! I mean, I NEED to know what Bree will decide!
I highly recommend this series and this author.

This series keeps getting better
So fun to listen to - I know this was recently released but I honestly can’t wait for the next book. A very enjoyable storyline and characters with awesome narration.
