Sonny Lofthus is a strangely charismatic and complacent young man. Sonny’s been in prison for a dozen years, nearly half his life. In The Keeper of Lost Causes, Jussi Adler-Olsen introduced Detective Carl Mørck, a deeply flawed, brilliant detective newly assigned to run Department Q, the home of Copenhagen’s coldest cases. The result wasn’t what Mørck - or readers - expected, but by the opening of Adler-Olsen’s shocking, fast-paced follow-up, Mørck is satisfied with the notion of picking up long-cold leads. So he’s naturally intrigued when a closed case lands on his desk: A brother and sister were brutally murdered two decades earlier....

When a young woman is found brutally murdered in her own apartment with an intricate pattern of lines carved into her face, Copenhagen police detectives Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner are assigned to the case. Soon, they establish a link between the victim, Julie Stender, and her landlady, Esther de Laurenti, who’s a bit too fond of drink and the host of raucous dinner parties with her artist friends. Esther also turns out to be a budding novelist - and when Julie turns up as a murder victim in the unfinished mystery she’s writing, the link between fiction and real life grows.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Publisher's Summary
From the internationally best-selling author of the Harry Hole novels comes this short, lyrical tale of a man on the run from a crime lord's deadly retribution, lost far beyond the Arctic Circle, where the sun remains in the sky for months on end.
A wayward hitman, mourning a recent loss, arrives in a tiny town on Norway's far northeastern border. He calls himself Ulf and gives a halfhearted excuse for his presence, but the locals, who seem as if out of a folk story from a previous century, ask him few questions and supply him with food, shelter, and a gun.
In his previous life, Ulf worked as a fixer for The Fisherman, one of the cruelest drug kings in Oslo, a man whose reach spans the globe. After acting foolishly (but out of mercy and desperation), Ulf has now become the man his boss needs fixed. Can this strange town - and especially a curious, lonely boy with his taciturn mother - offer Ulf a chance at redemption while he awaits the arrival of those who would hunt him down?

THANK GOD THIS BOOK WAS SHORT!
We all want to spread our wings at times and perform something different than where our talents normally take us. This is what Jo Nesbo and the narrator tried to do, and both failed miserably. The female narrator, Kim Gordon, spoke in the same irritatingly slow cadence with a monotone voice no matter what action was taking place -- and I use the word "action" here very loosely since no real energy or vitality occurs in the story -- and it was often quite difficult to discern which character was speaking. Nesbo, one of my favorite authors, essentially tried to convey a love story set in a cult-like atmosphere in his native land, which was neither interesting nor held the listener's attention. Quite a disappointment on every level.

worst narrator in the history of audiobooks
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I don't know where to begin - the list is too long.
What was most disappointing about Jo Nesbo’s story?
obviously one of Nesbo's losers, maybe an early story? marketed to us based on an assumption that fans of his better work will buy anything
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kim Gordon?
anyone at all
Any additional comments?
A perfectly awful reader, given a lame, amateurish story to read. You must think we aren't paying attention.

Boring and over-priced
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I like Jo Nesbo and have listened to all his books but his one is 1) boring 2) too short for the money. Less than 6 hours but full priced - James Lee Burke and C.J. Box deliver better stories and longer enjoyment.
Has Midnight Sun turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, but will not pre-order in the future. Will wait for other review.

Slow paced, not bad but slow

Worst narration ever. Not for Nesbo
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. Narration dull monotonous
Would you recommend Midnight Sun to your friends? Why or why not?
No because of narration. A departure from previous Nesbo
Would you be willing to try another one of Kim Gordon’s performances?

How Disappointing
Would you try another book from Jo Nesbo and/or Kim Gordon?
I could not relax and enjoy this book. The primary character is male--which took me awhile to confirm. The narrator Kim Gordon is so monotone--her voice barely changing throughout the read- I could hardly distinguish when characters changed. I found it disconcerting from start to finish. The actual story is unlike the other Nesbo books I've read (I love Nesbo and have read all the books). A bit like a fairytale--but without the grab of other Nesbo books. Without the incentive to hold on and progress to 'find out' what comes next. Very disappointing. I thought multiple times of stopping the listen--but because it is a short book--continued. Never to be drawn in. Sorry, Nesbo--I didn't enjoy it.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Monotone and female character reading for male character without changing her voice to indicate change in speaker.

Almost returned this book
Would you try another book from Jo Nesbo and/or Kim Gordon?
Definitely not Kim Gordon. First, this needed a male narrator. And secondly, it needed a narrator, not just a reader. I used it to help me sleep at night. Not kidding.
What could Jo Nesbo have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
More action. Less introspection. A plot.
What didn’t you like about Kim Gordon’s performance?
It was dull, monotone. Nothing to like.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not really. I only finished it because I usually love Jo Nesbo and was expecting the story to turn around.
