Story
We think we know what meditation is - especially in an era when "mindfulness" has improbably rocketed into the mainstream. Millions of people around the world have taken up a formal mindfulness meditation practice as part of their everyday lives. But there's no hard-and-fast rule that says you have to meditate in a certain way, in a particular place, or following a specific tradition. So what is meditation anyway? And why might it be worth trying? Or nurturing further if you already have practice?

What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

Would you ever listen to anything by the authors again?
yes, the authors are great, and i believe the program is very helpful. but the format in which it was presented isnt helpful without the book. this should be a companion audio for the book, rather than a standalone item.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Mindfulness?
I would make it follow the book precisely. organize it into chapters instead of small tidbits. make it whispersync ready, and connect it to the book.
Any additional comments?
I really wouldnt advise anyone to get this audiobook unless they have the print or kindle book and use this as a companion guide only.

Missing a written outline for the 8 week program
Any additional comments?
Really good content - but VERY hard to follow up and practice the detailed steps for the 8 week program. It would be so simple for the authors/publisher to include an 8 page pdf - a single page outline for each of the weekly steps. I was going to gift this audiobook to a friend, but not w/o the written support materials. Too bad ;-(

Is NOT an audio version of the book!
This was a huge disappointment, I expected the book - in audio form, it is not that at all. It is a very short recap of Mindfulness, followed by mainly guided meditation. While the latter is a good companion, that's NOT how it is being sold - it bears the books title, which is very misleading.
If you want a guided meditation as a companion to the book, then this would be a good fit.

The best mindfulness meditation book I've found
I've read various mindfulness meditation books over the last several years, and tried their mindfulness meditation suggestions with uneven results, but THIS is the book I was looking for. The authors stress evidence and explain cognitive behavior therapy, which kept me from rolling my eyes at any hippie mystical aspects of mindfulness. I jumped right in to listening to the introductory chapters on the hows, whys and benefits of mindfulness, and have been using the guided meditations on a daily basis for the last few weeks. There have been some stressful events in my life during this period, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much these meditations have helped. I had some expectations before I started this book that meditating was going to be a difficult and time-consuming task, but that has not been the case at all. Eight to ten minutes daily has made a significant difference in my life. I have been using whatever guided meditation I chose at random, but I'm now going back to the beginning and actually following the book's eight-week plan. Focus, awareness, acceptance, compassion, coping with negativity and the chaos that is life are all skills that I'm beginning to learn with the help of Mindfulness, and I'm very grateful to have finally found THE mindfulness book for me.

Useful for expanding meditation practice
Would you listen to Mindfulness again? Why?
I listen to the guided meditations daily as I go through the 8 weeks
What did you learn from Mindfulness that you would use in your daily life?
I have definitely seen a big difference in how I attend to people and tasks in my day to day life since starting this program.
For example - I am currently working through week 6: Turning towards difficulty. This guided meditation focuses on the physical sensation of any kind of negative emotion - for me that tends to be frustration or anger - and focusing on how it feels in the body and accepting it as it is. Doing this daily for just a week has allowed me to recognize my anger and frustration in its early stages - well before I get to the point where I snap out at my husband or kids - and take a few deep breaths to back off from the emotion. For someone who has spent a lot of time trying to be less reactive, this is a pretty big deal.
Currently I'm 36 weeks pregnant. The body scan and mindful movement exercise has been incredibly helpful for allowing me to see the discomforts of pregnancy at this point as they are, without giving them too much focus. So if I get a stab of pain, I just notice it and then notice that it has passed. As it turns out, most of these discomforts only last a few seconds at a time. It's the focus on them that make it seem so much worse.
Before this program I had been doing breath awareness for 10 minutes a day for several months. The guided weekly instructions have introduced me to different meditations that have increased my awareness of my body, my thoughts and my feelings. It has increased my focus during breath awareness meditation. I found the structure very useful for making any time spent meditating, more uh, meditative.
Oh - my husband is doing this with me now too. He is a skeptic of a high order, but read enough about the benefits of mindfulness and seen enough change in me that he is starting with the week 1 meditation without having read the rest of the book.
