Research suggests that the presence of the therapist, and how the therapist truly forges a connection with the client in therapy, are the most crucial factors affecting the client’s healing process. An engaged, committed, caring therapist who is mindful of his or her own self - and how that self relates to the client - is the key determinant of how well that client will respond to therapy.

So well done. A joy to listen to
For the nerds-at-heart, this book takes the spiritual experience of meditation and puts it into scientific terms to explain the HOWs and WHYs of the benefits of meditation. Hits the SPOT for me! Truly rich in explanation and execution. I have become a devoted fan of Jack Kornfield and Dan Siegel after this book. I would recommend that you have some background about how the brain works (such as by reading Your Brain at Work by David Rock) and some experience with meditation (Any form will do) to get the full impact of how much this book puts into context.
Awesome! Have given it to 3 other people as gifts.

A Gift to Humanity
Would you listen to Mindfulness and the Brain again? Why?
This dialogue is a fascinating interface between the foundational understandings of neurobiology and Buddhism. What emerges out of this discourse is a remarkable vision for human potential. Dr. Siegal expresses the science of ‘Mindsight” in a way that delights our shared yearning for peace in our inner and outer worlds. The process of “Mindsight” explains the possibility of neural integration, a process towards wholeness that is often impeded by states of neural rigidity and chaos. Siegal is able to communicate complex notions to a general audience that enlightens rather than alienates. The science is so deep and complex that we’re fortunate such a spokesman has arisen to make mindsight deeply accessible, a field that might otherwise come across as deeply obtuse.
Jack Kornfield is a living embodiment of all he teaches, serving to remind listeners that awakening is always possible in this life. With levity, humor, and intelligence, Kornfield transmits the Buddhist wisdom that he has ardently studied and practiced throughout his life. Throughout these discourses, Kornfield serves to illuminate the dynamic and nuanced principles of Buddhist psychology and how they may be applied within our lives.
It is my sincere conviction that these dialogues will aid and support anyone who is interested in the art and science of personal and collective transformation. Now more than ever, we must look at what the wisdom traditions and modern science are telling us about the origins and resolutions of tribalism. If we are to save ourselves from ecological ruin and collective self-destruction, we cannot look for some faraway, remote technology to come in and rescue us. Instead, we must harness our evolutionary gifts in a way that serves the entirety of humanity, as opposed to only those we consider “us.” This is more than just a naïve ideal, but an invitation to enlist all your inner resources to begin the process of training the mind. All life on Earth needs a collective awakening from humanity. I strongly recommend this audio program for anyone seeking personal meaning that may serve the planet and generations to come. These trainings, if followed, may be the most important actions you could ever take with your life.
While the stakes I describe here may appear grandiose, we are also surrounded in a vast mystery. We are bequeathed with an inviolable spirit that is the still point of the changing seasons of this world. To touch this mystery of loving awareness, and to perfect your love, provides a deep abiding known as equanimity that is able to live with profound dignity even amidst great suffering. To touch this deep knowing of the self will give you all the resources you need to join the world and contribute in a compassionate way—dedicated to the flourishing of life and the alleviation of suffering.

Mind & Brain are NOT the same
There are layers in the brain that process the flow of information differently. The new proceeds up thru 7 layers, while the known proceeds down thru 3. The how & why of this is the subject of the book.
