Story
You may think you know this story. There's a young queen about to be married. There are some good, brave, hardy dwarfs; a castle shrouded in thorns; and a princess cursed by a witch, so rumor has it, to sleep forever. But no one is waiting for a noble prince to appear on his trusty steed here. This fairy tale is spun with a thread of dark magic, which twists and turns and glints and shines.

Story
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Doesn't translate well to audio
I love Neil and I love audiobooks. However, this is the only instance when I've heard one of his stories come off flat, and it's not the narrator's fault. There's just not much there. But, of course, if you've seen the movie, it's understandable that such beautifully strange visuals don't translate well into words. It seemed like there wasn't even an attempt to describe the "dream" sequence, and it feels hollow. Not typical Gaiman Greatness. Neil is a master writer with an astounding imagination. I recommend all of his other work, especially the ones he narrates himself.

Great Accompaniment to the Movie
Nice it was narrated by Helena herself. And the story is overall good. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is the lack of details in a lot of places. There was a lot of description lacking and I honestly only knew what things or characters looked like because I saw the movie. Anyone experiencing this alone will have to imagine quite a bit.

Childhood Relived
The movie made from this book was a favorite of mine as a child. It was one of the biggest inspirations for me going into the art field. Now, older, listening to the audiobook is like taking a stroll down memory lane.
The voice actor reading this is a perfect fit for Helena’s attitude and snarky comebacks and is still able to convey Valentine’s characteristic charm. I’d recommend this to literally any and everyone looking for a something to listen to or as a bedtime story for children.
Thank you for giving me back a piece of me I hadn’t realized I’d lost!

Delightful fantasy
Neil Gaiman is so good I decided to follow him on Twitter, and found myself irritated that he was tweeting instead of writing another book for me to read. He seems to often meet the standard definition of a fantasy story: his characters leave the 'real' world for a different one, and then return after having resolving a personal conflict. This one involves parents and children and otherworld parents and children. I don't want to spoil the story--just enjoy!
