Bad

This book was horrible. Tedious. Boring. Flip flopped all over the place. Couldn’t even force my self to finish it.

Many Twists and Turns

Better than the first book, but no knock on the first one. The characters that continue into this story grow and stretch into more complex people. Many unexpected plot twists and turns... a great escape from the current world.

Good book, but...

This book was pretty good, and I downloaded it because it was included in the membership, but the Scottish brogue was so thick, it was a bit hard to understand sometimes.

again, really?

The whole time I was saying, it better not be a repeat of the last book. And yet it was. Seriously? Have you heard of the term original?

Detailed Savage Violence

I did try because the writing was competent and the story cohesive enough but in this book and “The Stolen Child” the author apparently revels in the violence and sexual assaults, particularly against children. I read plenty of violent suspenseful books (I did not shrink at Hannibal or Red Dragon and I read 5 books a week) but there is no literary payoff that makes it warranted in this case.

Keeps you guessing

I really enjoyed this book, the characters are all solid and don’t rely on tropes. The story is very well crafted and it has lots or twists and turns. I also like that the so called good guys are flawed and sometimes really unlikeable. It makes them human. Would highly recommend.

Anarchy in Slow Motion

Unusual narration style, read slowly, beautifully and deliberately, reveals a tale of drug dealers wiping each other out, while PI Hanlon investigates. A full panoply of rogues and rascals cause mayhem and murder, What becomes of her dog and the filleted rabbits in her fridge? Strangely mesmeric. ENJOYABLE

great fast paced action

I loved this book and the reader is terrific. The story never flags for a heartbeat. This is the second in the series and I can't believe they were free. I'm already buying the third book and can't wait to listen to more of Hanlon. The reader is superb and each character is very distinct so the story is very easy to follow.

Good listen

I really enjoyed this audio book- especially the narration. Definitely worth a listen. Goodish plot, maybe a little drawn out towards the end but certainly superior to a lot of detective novels around.

Gets even better, on a par with Ian Rankin!

Set mainly in Edinburgh and with a cast of innocents and not so innocents, pitted against organized crime and drug-dealing gangland.
I did guess halfway through one of the not so innocents, but that did not detract from the building suspense as Hanlon first of all gets it wrong (with a bit of a lol moment!) and then starts to close in on the villains. One criticism: most of the baddies have a soft side except the boss, Miller, who was implausibly inhuman in his totally amoral extreme violence, in contrast to Rankin's Big Ger Cafferty who does have his own morality, even if not aligned with societal norms!
