Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain, yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit.

In this fascinating and thought-provoking book, author Nick Lane brings together the latest research findings in the exciting field of mitochondria research to reveal how our growing understanding of mitochondria is shedding light on how complex life evolved, why sex arose (why don't we just bud?), and why we age and die. This understanding is of fundamental importance, both in understanding how we and all other complex life came to be, but also in order to be able to control our own illnesses, and delay our degeneration and death.

For over a century, we've accepted the scientific consensus that cancer results from genetic disease due to chromosomal damage in cell nuclei. But what if scientists are chasing a flawed paradigm? What if cancer isn't a disease of damaged DNA but rather of defective metabolism as a result of mitochondrial dysfunction? What if that startling truth could revolutionize our understanding of other diseases, too - and show us a radical new path to optimal health?

Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease - a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease.

We all know the dangers of sugar and salt: but the danger attributed to the second white crystal has more to do with getting too little of it, not too much. Too little salt can shift the body into semi-starvation mode, causing insulin resistance, and may even cause twice as much fat to be absorbed for every gram that's consumed. Too little salt in certain populations can also actually increase blood pressure as well as resting heart rate.

It's not you; it's your schedule. Does it sound like magic? It's not. We've all heard of circadian rhythms - those biological processes that give us jet lag and make us night owls or early birds. But few of us know just how profoundly these diurnal patterns affect our overall health. Bad habits - like skipping meals, squeezing in workouts, working late into the night and then trying to catch up on sleep during the weekend - disrupt our natural cycles. A growing body of research on chronobiology reveals just how sensitive the human body is to these rhythms all the way down to the genetic level.

Publisher's Summary
The book has information for patients and practitioners on optimizing mitochondrial function for greater health and longevity.
Why do we age? Why does cancer develop? What's the connection between heart failure and Alzheimer's disease or infertility and hearing loss? Can we extend lifespan, and if so, how? What is the exercise paradox? Why do antioxidant supplements sometimes do more harm than good? Many will be amazed to learn that all these questions, and many more, can be answered by a single point of discussion: mitochondria and bioenergetics.
In Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine, naturopathic doctor Lee Know tells the epic story of mitochondria - the widely misunderstood and often-overlooked powerhouses of our cells. The legendary saga began over two billion years ago, when one bacterium entered another without being digested, which would evolve to create the first mitochondrion. Since then, for life to exist beyond single-celled bacteria, it's the mitochondria that have been responsible for this life-giving energy. By understanding how our mitochondria work, in fact, it is possible to add years to our lives, and life to our years.
Current research, however, has revealed a dark side: many seemingly disconnected degenerative diseases have tangled roots in dysfunctional mitochondria. However, modern research has also endowed us with the knowledge on how to optimize its function, which is of critical importance to our health and longevity.
Lee Know offers cutting-edge information on supplementation and lifestyle changes for mitochondrial optimization, such as CoQ10, D-Ribose, cannabinoids, and ketogenic dietary therapy and how to implement their use successfully.
Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine is an invaluable resource for practitioners interested in mitochondrial medicine and the true roots of chronic illness and disease as well as anyone interested in optimizing their health.

Mitochondria; Not just ATP energy generators...
If you're looking to build a house, you don't start building the roof. You start with the foundation, build the rest of the framework from the ground up. Same thing with the human body when it comes to health and wellness. Mitochondria are the foundation of health at a cellular level.
When Mitochondria function optimally, it means the rest of your body and it's metabolism is working as it should. When your metabolism is off, it impacts your Mitochondria and subsequently energy production and overall health and wellness. Its a cyclical relationship and one that we generally don't think of. We tend to think that the Mitochondria just handle their business as part of normal metabolic function.
Unfortunately that's not the case. There are so many factors that go into metabolic function that it would take an entire book to explain them all in detail. This is that book. If you're looking to optimize health, and understand that you build a strong house from the foundation up - this book is essential reading.
The great thing is you don't need a medical degree to understand it either. A basic level of biology, physics and anatomy and physiology is enough to really get a lot of value from this material.

mostly good
This is pretty technical with a lot of vocabulary that is very specific to biology. For the average person you're left feeling like the recommendations for supplements are critical for survival. The book talks like it is an open and shut case. That was the one thing I did not like about the book. It seemed like some of the supplement recommendations didn't have a lot of scientific testing behind them. at least not on human beings. You don't know for sure about side effects from some of the supplements. That being said, the descriptions he gives about how the body operates are very eye-opening and interesting, technical jargon aside.

I'm not a physician, I'm a high school drop out who loves learning about the human body and health. I had to replay the first chapter literally 10 times just to truly grasp cell structure.
The information in this book is rich and the narrator was great. At first I thought his way of talking way a bit exaggerated but it grows on you and he keeps you engaged.
I love this book and I'll probably go through it again lol
EDIT: I've now repeated it 5 times and some chapters 10-15 times. This book is insane!

Amazing insight into the biology of Mitochondria
Firstly this book is very heavy if you do not have a biology and more of a medical background. I thoroughly enjoyed the clear narration and gained a lot of understanding of how important Mitochondria is for virtually everything!!! In medical school we just touch the very basics of mitochondria in biochemistry physiology and some mitochondrial diseases. This has made me want to go deeper into biochemistry as well. After all, we are all group of specialised cells run by chemical reactions and ATP !!

Amazing. Difficult subject to write and narrate - both done with aplomb.
I've started an experimental regimen of NMN (NAD+) and it was difficult to garner enough information on the how and why's. This book helped me understand so much about the systems that drive out bodies - as well as inadvertently helping me understand why the NAD+ cycle is such an interesting avenue into longevity and health.
I applaud the writer for taking such a technical topic and making the research so clear and easy to understand. I read/listen-to a lot of science and tech books and I'm very aware of the skill involved in doing these topics well for the average reader.
I don't write reviews often - but this one was a MUST.
The narrator needs a special shout-out - one thing to write in way that connects - a different (and just as challenging, I'd wager) task to find someone to read it in a way that's both engaging and portrays an understanding of the science and terminology.
Hats off to this entire production.
Exceptional book, exceptional narration, fascinating content.

Fascinating and informative
There's a lot to digest so I decided to listen a second time. Definitely time well spent for anyone who wants to increase their healthspan.
This is the only work I have read that has explained the Why? of why exercise and calorie restriction extend healthy life whereas excess/poor food and a sedentary lifestyle shorten healthspan.
