After the War of the Gods, the demons were cast out and fell to the world. Mankind was nearly eradicated by the seemingly unstoppable beasts until the gods sent the great hero, Ramrowan, to save them. He united the tribes, gave them magic, and drove the demons into the sea. Publisher's Summary
New entry in the best-selling Monster Hunter International series by Dragon Award-winning authors Larry Correia and Sarah A. Hoyt
When Owen Pitt and the rest of the Monster Hunter International crew are called away to mount a month’s-long rescue mission in a monster-infested nightmare dimension, Julie Shackleford - Owen’s wife and descendant of MHI founder Bubba Shackleford - is left behind. Her task: hold down the fort and take care of her new baby son Ray. Julie’s devoted to the little guy, but the slow pace of office work and maternity leave are starting to get to her. But when a routine field call brings her face-to-face with an unspeakable evil calling itself Brother Death, she’ll get more excitement than she ever hoped for.
Julie is the Guardian of a powerful ancient artifact known as the Kamaresh Yar, and Brother Death wants it. In the wrong hands, it could destroy reality as we know it. Julie would die before giving it up.
Then Ray goes missing, taken by Brother Death. The price for his safe return: the Kamaresh Yar. If Julie doesn’t hand over the artifact it means death - or worse - for baby Ray. With no other choice left to her, Julie agrees to Brother Death’s demands. But when you’re dealing with an ancient evil, the devil is in the details.
To reclaim her son, Julie Shackleford will have to fight her way through necromantic death cults, child-stealing monsters, and worse. And she’ll have to do it all before Brother Death can unleash the Kamaresh Yar.
It’s one woman against an army of monsters. But Julie Shackleford is no ordinary woman - she’s one tough mother!

PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW
This is NOT a Monster Hunter International book as we know it! Because I absolutely LOVE the MHI world, I automatically bought it without looking at the reviews and did not notice the addition of an author. Big mistake. Larry Correia apparently had no part in the writing of the book - not his style of writing or his sense of humor. The narrator is NOT the narrator I am used to hearing for the previous books in this series and whom I adore. Oliver Wyman's voice is one of the MHI main strengths. and his absence ruins the whole book for me because the voices of the characters I love are all missing. On top of that, the narrator of MH Guardian is not good. Julie is a strong mature Southern woman. The female narrator in MH Guradian sounds like a California teenager. Not at all the way Julie should sound - and I mention again that the voices of all my favorite characters are totally different, and wrong, Totally ruins the listening experience. Note to producers - you should NEVER change narrators in a well loved series, particularly when the narrator being replaced, such as Oliver Wyman, is fantastic. Doing so basically changes ALL the characters in the book and in the MHI world, the characters are a major draw.
I strongly recommend that you NOT purchase this book if you are a MHI world lover. You will be very disappointed. I am returning this book unfinished because I could not get through the first few chapters. Correia, why did you and your producers do this to your loyal fans? It would have been better for there to be no book at all instead of this horrible offering. Really hurts your brand.

Total Disappointment
I listen to audiobooks every single day and have never felt strongly enough about a book to leave a review, but this book is so terrible I have to do it with this one.
I love this series, and have listened to each installment MANY times. However, this installment in the series is terrible.
First of all, the new narrator apparently hasn't listened to previous installments and misprounces word like "Harbinger ". Also, Julie, a Southern girl from Alabama, would have a Southern accent. There are other items like this.
I could live with that, but there is no way Julie would think and talk the way the character in this book would. Julie is a strong, independent woman of action, not the hand wringer in this story.
I strongly suspect Larry Correia didn't write much, if any, of this installment.

Can’t really skip it, but not like the rest
I’ve read this series, and the Memoirs set, multiple times. This Audible book is terrible. The reader was bad for this character, and I have to imagine Mr. Correa wrote an outline, then had serious life issues that caused him to be fully out of touch with this text..
Maybe the original reader could have covered over some of the poor writing, but this reader was even less engaged with the Monster Hunter series than the author! Name one series where changing the reader in the middle was a good thing? This women has no southern accent, missed Julie’s normal behavior/attitude completely, and gave us a whiney ‘girl’ that couldn’t pronounce Earl’s last name, or any of the European monster hunters’s last name either. Shouldn’t the new reader at least listen to the previous books?
As a reader, you likely need this book to get to the next one. But don’t expect to enjoy it. I didn’t. I’d of thought the editor could have stopped this travesty? When Butcher and Audible blew Ghost Story, he manned up and had it re-read by his partner voice actor—for free—but how does one recover from both poor writing and poor reading? Not sure. Really disappointed.
My suggestion—don’t buy this until Correa comes out with the next book—then listen to the two in order—hopefully the next book will eclipse this one. Crushingly disappointing.

Commits a Cardinal Sin
I think this is an absolute sin for any long running book serries. *NEVER* Replace the narrator if there is any possible alternative.
Personally, I find the new narrator fine in quality. But that's not the issue. Replacing the narrator in an ongoing book serries is like when you're watching a favorite TV show and they suddenly replace an Actor... only, worse, because this is replacing the entire cast plus the director. It doesn't matter if the replacement is good, it's supremely disruptive.
A huge part of a book serries is getting attached to the characters, and for Audiobooks, the narration of the characters is nearly as important as the actual writing. Suddenly having all the characters you are attached to speaking in different voices and losing all the quirks and inflections you are used to is just massively jarring. It just shouldn't be done.

Disappointed...
It is clear Larry Correia did not write this book...it’s painful. The story lacks the descriptive language that makes the series work. It is flat out corny. I will be taking audible up on their return policy.

No drawl
It was like listening to bad fan fiction with worse narration. Bailey Carr doesn't attempt a southern accent and over emphasizes random words, it was really difficult to finish the book. Julie has always been a strong female character, in this book she comes off as whiney, weak teenager. I've always been a big fan of Larry's books and this series, but this whole book is bad.

Libertarianism, Europe bad, Julie loves her baby
Congratulations, in reading the title of this review you have now read the entire book. Julie, while not incredibly developed in the previous books is reduced to a vehicle for complaining about government, the EU and gun control while talking about how bad ass she is and how much she loves her baby.
The plot is fine but feels much lower stakes compared to previous books (world ending abominations vs. a single baby). Through most of the book we only really interact with Julie and the supporting cast is much weaker than in previous books as most of the characters we know and love are busy elsewhere or as good as written out in the first few chapters.
I would have been able to rate it 3 stars if it wasn't for the CONSTANT insertion of the author's politics. If it were once or twice it would be fine but its several times every chapter. Whether it's regulation of business, government waste, the EU, gun control or even environmental awareness the author cannot focus on the monsters the book is ostensibly about because they are too busy taking political potshots.
The narrator is fairly weak, providing very little emotion to the main character and for some reason doing a robot voice for all the non-American characters.
Don't waste your time with this one.

Not actually bad, just not actually good..
First half is pretty good but it drops off the boil about half way through and is just formulaic and dull from there on. The narrator has a nice voice but a limited rage, which makes it difficult to follow conversations. Also the character of Julie in this book is substantially different to how she is in the books where she isn't the main character, what the writers seem to think of as motherly concern often seems to just be whining, totally out of character.
Edit: have just revisited the entire run of MHI novels in order and barely made it half-way into this one before giving up and moving on to "Bloodlines", the next one in the series. It's even weaker the second time around.

This is what happens if Julie Shackleford is a Californian yummy mummy, not a southern belle Van Helsing
The problems with this book are the reader, the plot and the ability to write dialogue or scenery. Some important facts appear though so here is the TLDR.
Spoiler alert
Spoiler alert
Spoiler alert The first five chapters are Julie Shackleford moaning. Then we find out that she has the old one artefact which is a surprise to literally no one. Then we have the one interesting twist, she has a piece of Mr trashbags who basically becomes baby Groot. Bad guys steal her baby, injure Albert Lee again, kill boss Shackleford and leave a bunch of aux who would have been cool characters confuse and irrelevant. Then Julie chases the artefact through a portal into Germany, finds out that German government is efficient, goes to France and kills a rat monster, goes to Portugal with the assistance of management and breaks up an auction for her baby but Susan steals him and runs away. Then we find out Portuguese government is corrupt but one good agent puts together A raid with 20 rubbish Portuguese Rockies and 18 MHI Rockies and retirees. Somehow Julie discovers the guardian curse doesn’t have to be aimed at the artefact but whatever the guardian cares about most, so with the power of a mother‘s love she beat up Susan and takes her base jumping of a rooftop during the day in Portugal, Susan is a fireable when she hits the water and disappears. As they leave a bad guy reappears, crashes the helicopter which kills the baby but it’s okay because Julie just takes a new black tattoo to bring him back to life with the power of a mother‘s love or something. Oh yes, she also has about five new lethal injuries that have been tattooed so she is now Way more inked and a confirmed immortal bad ass. Honestly, don’t read the book it’s just painful to listen to.

Narrator ruins the book!
Loved all the other books in this series but the storyline isn't great and the change of narrator makes it 10 times worse! Such a let down!

Whron pronunciation of established names
I know it's a minor gripe, but when you get a change of narrator in a book series it's an annoyance when they pronounce long established name . Every time you hear it it's like nails on a chalkboard.
Not her fault I liked her pacing and tone thoughlout the book

Worst by far
I can't decide if it's a sub par story or if it's the terrible narration that makes this so boring. It's read as just one really long sigh. I'd have thought that someone would have also picked up on the fact that she keeps calling Earl "Har bing er" you'd have thought she'd know his bloody name at least.

disappointing narrator
I had to get this book because I love the monster hunter series, unfortunately it's spoilt by the whining voice of the narrator, after listening to the previous books in the series we know what Julie Shackleford sounds like and it's not the weepy whining representation we get in this book. The story is the usual standard well written action piece we're used to from Larry Correia and this series and is worthy of 5* but owing to the terribly disappointing performance of the narrator overall I can only give 3*. It really took all my will power to get through the 13+hrs I just hope the next book reverts back to the winning formula presented in the previous instalments.

A paint by numbers addition
I usually love the books in this series. This one, however, is a drab and dreary "political commentary" pretending to be a novel. The established character is unrecognisable from previous books. Gone is the intelligent, calm and collected Julie Shackleford to be replaced by a desperate headless chicken. I will admit the one redeeming factor is the minuscule companion that accompanies her. The plot itself feels.... less somehow almost like it's a contrived linking of European locations with a complaint about everything
The narration is confusing to say the least. I have experienced with other MHI stories that she has narrated and from other books my wife has listened to that she only has three voices in her toolbox: generic man, generic woman and gravelly deep monster. This makes significant conversations between same gendered characters almost impossible to follow.
In short: Mr. Trash Bags good, everything else bad.

So disappointing
Firstly MHI is my very favourite book series. I have listened to the series maybe 12-13 times in total and I absolutely love it every time
This is not an MHI book
It is so obviously not written by Larry Correia, it does not have the humour, it does not have the same feel for the characters
And this new narrator is obviously not a fan. She has not listened to any of the others and her terrible attempts at character voices is appalling. Even if she listened just to get the names correct!
When Oliver Wyman reads the narrative - you know instantly who is talking.
That’s 13 hours of my life I won’t get back :(

Choose someone else
The narrator is just wrong, like she hasn’t listened to any of the previous books.
Also it’s written differently and it’s just not Julie.
Recommend just reading This one.

Not like the other books
I never read books written by two authors and this book has shown me why.
You just can’t have someone else write existing characters. They will almost never get it right.
I suppose it was possible since we’ve never been inside Julie Shacklefords head before - but if this is an example of her thoughts - I’m glad we haven’t.
She’s so WHINY.
And I doubt Larry would ever use the word “décolletage “.
The narrator over dramatised - ending too many sentences on an upper inflection (which personally drives me crazy) - and Julies Southern accent was non existent.
Honestly I would have preferred the regular series narrator (Oliver Wyman) to do this one too.
The story isn’t too bad - more action than Siege.

Great writer, poor narrator choice
I couldn't even get caught up in the story because of the awful narration. As a huge fan of the Monster Hunter series, I was super keen for this book to come out. I love LOVE my audible versions of this series and have listened to them many times. Oliver Wyman narrates them all brilliantly and then...this. What the heck?! The narrator does not have the range of voices the Oliver Wyman does. Not even close. OK, not even in the same universe. It sounds like she didn't even bother to listen to all of the previous books in the series and mangled the pronunciation of so many words it was like nails on a chalkboard. I think I speak for many of us when I say I'd rather listen to Oliver Wyman narrating the whole book in falsetto (which he does beautifully in ALL the previous books without breaking a sweat) than have to listen to this. Larry Correia and Oliver Wyman had a FANTASTIC winning combination in this series so, why mess with it so horribly at this point I'll never understand. I only made it half way through the book before I gave up and stopped listening. I ended up buying a hard copy and, yes, the story was good but the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. Very disappointing from a die hard fan of this series.

Great performance. Fun story.
Superpowers that are difficult to actuate/access... from fighting Super-vampire hand-to-hand then to fighting normal skin walker in helicopters with normal strength/speed... is always a tricky author balance, but great fun.

Good enough but not enough.
I am an avid follower of the Monster Hunter series and I absolutely love all the kick ass action of Owen Pitt. I just wish I had the follow up from this one. I'm waiting for the great battle.
I did love the motherly softness and adoration that the narrator successfully portrays throughout. I loved the ending as well but I wish it had a little more of a build up to it instead of it feeling like a side note.
Above all, still a die hard fan of the Moster Hunter series and again can't wait for more, hopefully they are released sooner this time!!
