Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author P. C. Cast brings us a new epic fantasy set in a world where humans, their animal allies, and the earth itself has been drastically changed. A world filled with beauty and danger and cruelty.

Mari is an Earth Walker, heir to the unique healing powers of her Clan; but she has cast her duties aside...until she is chosen by a special animal ally, altering her destiny forever. When a deadly attack tears her world apart, Mari reveals the strength of her powers and the forbidden secret of her dual nature as she embarks on a mission to save her people. It is not until Nik, the son of the leader from a rival dominating clan, strays across her path that Mari experiences something she has never felt before.

Now darkness is coming, and with it a force more terrible and destructive than the world has ever seen, leaving Mari to cast the shadows from the earth. By forming a tumultuous alliance with Nik, she must make herself ready. Ready to save her people. Ready to save herself and Nik. Ready to embrace her true destiny and obliterate the forces that threaten to destroy them all.

Excellent Potential

I really like the story, and the performance. The writing was pretty weak, and the plot was so loaded with estrogen and liberalism, it's like the author forced it. This has the potential to be the next Lord of the Rings, or the next Harry Potter, if she can quit loading it to the eyeballs with silliness.

Great Book

Wonderfully developed characters with a strong being for a new series. Can't wait for the next one. The narration is strong and well done also.

Engaging!

I love the way this book is written, but Caitlin Davies makes it amazing! I love the voices & how she portrays the characters. She really brings it to life for me! The story kept me engaged for hours. P.C. Cast is a wonderful writer, and her imagination is amazing!

Disgusting! Disturbing animal torture!!!

Had I known how graphic and disturbing this book would be in terms of animal torture I never would’ve wasted my time and money on this book. Made it through three chapters and I couldn’t handle it anymore. The details surrounding the torture of animals is very descriptive and describes in detail the sounds the animal makes as it dies. So sad. I wanted a fantasy story not this. Will never read another P C cast book.

Absolutely Awful!

Unbearable! Could not finish this book no matter how hard I tried. The narrator sounds like a machine and the story unfolds at a snail's pace.

Narrator terrible, but the story is awesome

Caitlin Davies reads this book like a robot. Her tone is monotone. The story is really good. Cast has created a very interesting new world . The characters are likeable, unless they are meant to be unliked. I look forward to the next book in the series, but I will be buying a hard copy rather than audible.

Something different

This was a surprise. When I started I didn't had an idea on what the book was about, but as it unfolds it described an interesting distopia world. At the end I liked it. The only reason I took one star off es for the slow begging.

My favorite 💜

This book is a great post apocalyptic story. The connections between the characters and different groups of people makes for such an interesting read. It will make you laugh and cry and feel like you are apart of this amazing world Pc Cast has created. I adore the character growth in this book and series! As in the title it’s my favorite series. I recommend all the way Catlin Davies is such an amazing narrator! Her different voices are so great! Just listen you will love it too! ( It does have some triggering things in it. Like slavery, rape, violence, illness and death.)

Terrible narration

Unfortunately I couldn’t get far in due to the stilted and robotic nature of the narration

Narration is terrible

The story seems interesting so far but the narration is absolutely terrible. It is so difficult to continue as it sounds Alexa is reading the book, long unnecessary pauses that make it so difficult to listen to!
