Publisher's Summary
2020 Audie Award, Humor
Nick Offerman and his posse of high-profile guests present this series of 12 short stories written in the style of classic kid’s tales, but with a decidedly adult approach.
If children's literature is any guide, we should all be able to magically fall asleep simply by saying goodnight to the things we can see from our beds. But any adult knows that our work anxieties and shameful memories would rather stay up all night and chat. That’s where Offerman and Co. come in—with clever and occasionally downright dark parodies of the classic kids genre. What really happened after Snow White died, from the perspective of the one medically trained dwarf? A naive wizard professor reports back from the trenches of an underprivileged school of magic. A middle-aged man is haunted by the voices of his own aging body. The stories will make you laugh, cry and probably squirm a little.
Performers include: Patrick Stewart, Alia Shawkat, Jane Lynch, Aparna Nancherla, Harry Goaz, Mike Birbiglia, Ellen Page, Rachel Dratch, Gary Anthony Williams, Nicole Byer, and Matt Walsh.

Story
At last, the full story behind Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman's epic romance, including stories, portraits, and the occasional puzzle. How did they do it? They came from completely different families, endured a significant age difference, and were separated by the gulf of several social strata. Megan loved books and art history; Nick loved hammers. But much more than these seemingly unsurpassable obstacles were the values they held in common: respect, decency, the ability to mention genitalia in almost any context, and an abiding obsession with the songs of Tom Waits.

About the Host
Best known as the indomitable Ron Swanson in the popular NBC television series Parks and Recreation, Nick Offerman is an uncommon quadruple threat: carpenter, comedian, actor, and author. Offerman first hit the New York Times bestseller list with the release of his semi-autobiographical work Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man’s Fundamentals for Delicious Living, and followed it up with the best-selling Gumption: Relighting the Torch of Freedom with America’s Gutsiest Troublemakers and Good Clean Fun: Misadventures in Sawdust at Offerman Woodshop. Offerman co-wrote and co-narrated the Audie Award winning audiobook The Greatest Love Story Ever Told: An Oral History with his wife Megan Mullally. Currently he keeps busy producing and hosting a lighthearted crafting competition, Making It, alongside Amy Poehler for NBC.

On Broadway and West End stages, Patrick has also appeared in A Life in the Theatre, The Master Builder, The Ride Down Mt. Morgan, and The Tempest. For his acclaimed solo production of A Christmas Carol, Stewart played over 40 characters, garnering an Olivier, Drama Desk, and WhatsOnStage Award.

Probably not for everyone
As the other review shows, this is likely not the Audible Original for everyone. The humor is not rip-roaring or goof-ball style. It's cynical, clipped, and dry. If you find amusement in those styles, then you will love this. More Bedtime Stories for Cynics explores the oddity and satire in being human. Every story is a dark parody about adult life. A man who can't escape his acid reflux, a middle-aged woman looking for love in all the wrong places, a man being haunted and harassed by his aging body, and so many more. These stories are all downright funny and relatable, and read by such a great cast of people. Nick Offerman, Jane Lynch, Ellen Page, and THE Sir Patrick Stewart to name a few. I absolutely recommend giving this a listen if you enjoy satirical adult comedy with a lean toward dry cynicism. This one gets an easy 5 stars across the board from me!

Hilarious!
Overall, this is hysterically funny. Th only problem I found was that, at times, the background music and sound effects overpowered the performance and it was very difficult to hear what was being spoken. And I was using high quality professional AKG Noise-Cancelling Headfones, so I'm pretty sure this wasn't a gadget issue. Unfortunately the funniest story of all (I believe it is called The Hook Hand Man or something like that) was the most affected one with that kind of sound mixing problem. The lower the voice pitch of the reader, the more evident the problem showed. It was hardly noticeable during the women's readings, except for Angelica Huston, who had a lower pitch and the issue showed right away. Due to that issue (that happened quite often if I'm being honest) I gave it 4 stars.

Stale, not very cynical
What we have here are a collection of high school creative writing projects, with all the insight and humor that would imply. Even the attempts at being socially relevant (a feminist fairy tale, and a parody of a male midlife crisis) fall flat, when they really should have had a lot of potential. The rest are uninspired, slapdash attempts of observational humor (the labors of dealing with the TSA and boarding an airline... thankfully no peanut jokes). In great abundance, however, are lame puns and a healthy dose of pop culture references, which would be quite stale if not for the self-awareness of the authors, so as to presumably make those cliches "ironic". Maybe that's why they called it "for cynics". I might have expected to be more subversive if it were truly for cynics. Even Offerman doesn't lift the material. Same as usual, making woodworking and manly hobbies into sexual innuendo. Funny the first time maybe, not so much anymore.

Boring...
I dont understand how this could be so.... boring. Great cast of writers & performers. Stars even. And i love this kind of dry, opposite, Far-Side, adult type humor. But honestly, the writing and stories and side comments weren't funny. Audio performances were excellent, thank you actors! Was it just me then? Fine, I'll listen to the whole thing again another day, and really pay attention. Result: same. Liked the concept & performances. But actual stories were uninteresting and not funny. Sorry, I hate giving bad reviews. But I gotta be honest & fair.

I laughed through it all!!
Absolute perfection for the true cynic, twisted sense of humorist and just plain fun loving a-hole such as myself. I love me some Nick Offerman. That man is a pure genius on his delivery. ITS A MUST LISTEN.

Happily Surprised
This book was an unexpected surprise, I would definitely recommend it to anyone on the fence about it. The stories are great in their own right, but the actors definitely give it life. I admittedly only got this as one of monthly credits, but it's definitely one I'd recommend even buying. You won't regret it.
