Rosalyn Landor ruins good books
- By Janiegirl on 08-08-21
By: Lisa Kleypas
Publisher's Summary
In this captivating novel, Mary Balogh, the premier writer of Regency romance, invites you into a world of scandal and seduction, of glittering high society and intrigue, as an arrogant duke does the unthinkable - he falls in love with his mistress.
She raced onto the green, desperate to stop a duel. In the mêlée, Jocelyn Dudley, Duke of Tresham, was shot. To his astonishment, Tresham found himself hiring the servant as his nurse. But Jane Ingleby was far too bold for her own good. Her blue eyes were the sort a man could drown in - were it not for her impudence. She questioned his every move, breached his secrets, touched his soul. When he offered to set her up in his London town house, love was the last thing on his mind.
Jane tried to pretend it was strictly business, an arrangement she was forced to accept in order to conceal a dangerous secret. Surely there was nothing more perilous than being the lover of such a man. Yet as she got past his devilish façade and saw the noble heart within, she knew the greatest jeopardy of all, a passion that drove her to risk everything on one perfect month with the improper gentleman who thought love was for fools.

Any additional comments?
This is my first book by Mary Balogh and I must say I loved the push and pulls between the duke and Jane in this book. The two main characters fall in love, though initially both refuse to admit to it. Unlike most other books, here the arguments and strong personalities keeps the story more engaging and therefore the interactions and love scenes more intense. The duke's inability to accept his likes and wants makes him very mercurial in nature. Though a typical historical romance the behavior of the characters keep you guessing all the way to the end and so I loved this book and recommend it fully.

Let me start by saying I listened to this book for my book club and this is not my genre at all! With that said, I really enjoyed this book! I was surprised with so many things and with how much these characters reminded me of Elizabeth and Darcy. She was headstrong and bold, He was arrogant but had a hidden soft side for her. I will admit some parts dragged a little but I think that is more about me and the genre than the story itself. After listening to this book, I don't think I will shy away from this genre as much as I have in the past.
The narration was 50/50 for me. I really liked her for Jane but Jocelyn sounded a bit old to me. I would listen to her again!

Great story
I really liked this story, but I think the ending kind of stunk. It almost seemed like it was rushed through and given little energy or thought. Its definitely worth the read, but keep that in mind.
Jane is escaping a murder charge when she haphazardly falls into the middle of a duel, where the Duke is shot. She makes her way to his house when she is fired from her job for being late, looking for a note to take to her employer proving she had been at the duel so she can get her job back. He hires her for 3 weeks to nurse him while he recovers from his leg beiing shot. At the end of the 3 weeks they mutually decide she’ll be his mistress. It definitely kept my attention. I really enjoyed the secondary characters. While I did enjoy the book, the ending didn’t leave me with a desire to run out and get the next in the series. If I came across it for a good deal I’d get it, but otherwise I probably will pass.
Rosalyn Landor did a fantastic job, as usual.

Quite entertaining
I loved the characters in this story. I like it when the female protagonist is strong, yet able to be tender. And the villain is so very hateful that you want to choke him. Jane is brave and Tresham romantic and unwilling to fall in love. Of course there is always the HEA in a romance novel, but getting there was quite entertaining. And having Rosalyn Landor for narration made it even more enjoyable.

However many times I read this book I never get tired of the story.
I love the interaction between Jane and the Duke and the silliness of the ton in those times!

Is exactly how I imagined their voices to be!

Very Enjoyable
I loved the characters in this story, and I loved the time taken to develop them. Too often these novels are rushed and then the climax is not as gratifying.
That said, I couldn't stand the main male character's "eye glass". I wanted to groan every time this young, vivacious man would "lift his eye glass to peer at somebody". It was a cheap/lazy way to get out of describing haughty behaviour.
Other than that, I enjoy the book.
