When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Publisher's Summary
The game is once again afoot in this thrilling mystery from the best-selling author of The House of Silk, sanctioned by the Conan Doyle estate, which explores what really happened when Sherlock Holmes and his arch nemesis Professor Moriarty tumbled to their doom at the Reichenbach Falls.
Internationally best-selling author Anthony Horowitz's nail-biting new novel plunges us back into the dark and complex world of detective Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty - dubbed the "Napoleon of crime" by Holmes - in the aftermath of their fateful struggle at the Reichenbach Falls.
Days after the encounter at the Swiss waterfall, Pinkerton detective agent Frederick Chase arrives in Europe from New York. Moriarty's death has left an immediate, poisonous vacuum in the criminal underworld, and there is no shortage of candidates to take his place - including one particularly fiendish criminal mastermind.
Chase and Scotland Yard Inspector Athelney Jones, a devoted student of Holmes's methods of investigation and deduction originally introduced by Conan Doyle in The Sign of Four, must forge a path through the darkest corners of England's capital - from the elegant squares of Mayfair to the shadowy wharfs and alleyways of the London Docks - in pursuit of this sinister figure, a man much feared but seldom seen, who is determined to stake his claim as Moriarty's successor.
A riveting, deeply atmospheric tale of murder and menace from the only writer to earn the seal of approval from Conan Doyle's estate, Moriarty breathes life into Holmes's dark and fascinating world.

Always Enjoy Horowitz
Anthony Horowitz is a really good author and this is a really good book. Do not let the negative reviews of the "American" narrator stop you from listening to this book. It almost stopped me from purchasing it and I am sure glad I went ahead anyway. I really like the narration. I'm an American, born and raised on the east coast. To me, the accents are fine. Always accurate? Maybe not. But who cares. This is a really good narrator who I find believable. The only distractions have been me listening more closely to his accents because of the numerous poor reviews and thinking: "What are they complaining about."
It's a good book and good production by a wonderful author. Enjoy it.

A Marvelous Twist at the end....
With an hour left to go in this one I had already decided I "liked it".... then WHAMMO! The reader gets broadsided. A very good book went to REALLY GOOD.
I have to be careful not to spoil your pleasure with too much info here. I was sorta familiar with Doyle's Holmes, Watson, Moriarty et al but certainly not a Holmes-ophile. A general familiarity going in will help... but still have you vulnerable for the delicious GOTCHA with an hour to go.
Long time readers of a certain genre / certain authors take comfort in their "formulas" and knowing certain elements will take place in each book / movie. "Bond Movies" are a perfect example. "Moriarty" was moving along "in formula" and THEN ..... :-)

Torture, anguish and suffering....
This tome was terrible. Listening to it felt like abuse.
I normally like Anthony Horowitz. I've yet to give a bad review to one of his books.THIS is awful on so many levels that it would take ages for me to address each issue individually.
I'm struggling through the last bit. I'm grinding my teeth. Chapter 22 is nearly more than I can bear.
Save your sanity and a credit by passing on this horror.
That's it The last chapter really IS more than I can take.
I don't care what will happen in the last few minutes.
I'm returning this book and it doesn't matter if I get my credit back. Having it in my library means seeing it every time I scroll through my titles. I don't want to be reminded of the aggravation I have experience while struggling through *Moriarty*.
BTW the narrator made things worse. The terrible pronunciations and accents...….. Yikes!
Please, whoever edited this performance, take note: homey and homely do not mean the same thing.
********I recently learned that Americans have different definitions than British people for some words, homey and homely are among them. Good grief! As if English isn't confusing enough. 😯

My Two Cents - Very Fun Book
I just wanted to write a review because it seems that the written reviews are either "This is a great book!" or "Dreadful! Horrible!"
I thought the book was a very fun listen. I am not an avid Sherlock Holmes reader, so that may be the difference. I loved House of Silk and am very glad I used a credit for this. The narrator's American accent was good enough and it did not bother me, although I did prefer his posh accent.
What made the book fun for me was trying to anticipate the twist. I had a couple of theories and even though the end was indeed one I had contemplated, I was still very surprised. In fact, some of my surmises were WAY off, so I was very invested in finding out the ending.
I am new to Anthony Horowitz's books and I LOVE THEM. I recommend Magpie Murders and hope he is working on another spin off type of novel (one based on a golden age writer.)

WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!
First of all, let me say that I am a great fan of both Sherlock Holmes and Pinkerton's and was delighted to find a book that promised so much creativity.
Unfortunately, the storyline has too many anomalies, as well as character inconsistencies...don't give up...just get a good editor!
Derek Jacobi was an excellent narrator as Smith and Moriarty as usual, and I'm grateful he had the last few chapters by himself.
The "Anerican" voice actor greatly mispronounced so many supposedly American English words I can only hope he volunteered for this project. Before he expects an American audience to receive him as one who takes his job seriously, he'll have to learn to say words like "glacier", "clerk", "lever", etc. like we do. And don't try to pass your character off as an educated man from a rich family of the 19th century in New York while at the same time using a low class, New Jersey, 20th century accent. Listening to you is like fingernails on a chalkboard to my ears.
