Publisher's Summary

How to use motivational interviewing techniques to create meaningful sessions with your clients and effectively help them overcome health and lifestyle barriers.

Have you ever struggled with patient resistance to other evidence-based practices? Do you find it difficult to shift your current principles to align with the collaborative elements of motivational interviewing? Do you feel insecure or anxious about using motivational interviewing with clients because you’ve had little experience or direction? You’ve heard about motivational interviewing, but you aren’t sure what all the buzz is about.

Despite being created in the early 1980s, this collaborative approach to helping clients overcome health issues has often been overlooked in favor of other more therapist-led approaches.

However, doubt and mixed insecurities in clients is all too common from a practitioner's perspective, and this is something that motivational interviewing is actually designed to address.

More often than not, the first challenge in helping others during sessions is to help them process their contradictory feelings and thoughts—and this guide will take you through a host of useful strategies to do this successfully. This book presents an easy-to-use guide to motivational interviewing, including working examples of its use in practice, tips on phraseology, and a wealth of practical information, so you can start implementing it quickly and effectively. In Motivational Interviewing 101, you’ll discover:

  • A detailed analysis of the 4-step process used by professionals to lead successful client-based sessions
  • 3 real-life case studies to examine for practical implications of using motivational interviewing
  • A straightforward guide on the OARS principles, including example questions to take away and use in your sessions 8+ engaging interactive worksheets for you and your clients to benefit from
  • How to avoid the righting reflex (don’t fall into this common trap!)
  • And more

Helpful but needs editing

This was a thorough introduction to MI, with many examples and insightful details, but I thought it could have benefitted from some basic editing. Parts of it definitely seemed like more of a first draft than a published book. The author also did quite a bit of self disclosure, which to me distracted from this clinical text rather than enhancing it.

Beyond Expectations!

Anyone looking to get into being a practitioner, will definitely benefit from this book as it emphasizes real world scenarios and situations. Regarding barriers to implementation, it’ll teach about the recent therapeutic paradigm change, low confidence, faulty family support and internal resistance amongst others. An over well structured and comprehensive book by Rosenberg.

Good for teachers and trainers.

Read and listen to this audiobook and then you’ll come to the conclusion like I did that this is excellent for students studying motivational interviewing. I believe it would do well for classroom discussions, as the worksheets and exercises are really quite helpful and not over theory focused.

Fabulous Research.

This book offers by far the most breadth when it comes to the MI approach. I’ll be listening to the audiobook and reviewing the case studies and exercises several times for maximum effect and retention.
