Story
Our kids are moving less than any other generation in human history; indoor time and screen time have skyrocketed. As adults and kids turn more to "convenient" tech-based solutions, tasks that once required head-to-toe use of our muscles and bones can be done with a click and a swipe. Without realizing it, we’ve traded convenience for the movement-rich environment that our physical, mental, and environmental health depends on.

Publisher's Summary
”Move Your DNA is a landmark in explaining biomechanics." - Dr. Joan Vernikos former director of NASA’s Life Sciences Division and author of Sitting Kills, Moving Heals.
This new expanded edition of the bestselling Move Your DNA features an exercise glossary and three-level exercise program, accessible to audiobook listeners in the FREE EXERCISE PROGRAM PDF DOWNLOAD!
Accessible and fascinating, Move Your DNA is a game-changer in the world of health, fitness, and movement science. Hailed as offering a pioneering and paradigm-shifting perspective on exercise, this book:
• explains how movement works right down to the cellular level• examines the differences between the movements in a typical hunter-gatherer's life and the movements in a convenience-riddled lifestyle• discusses the issues with using exercise like movement vitamins instead of addressing the deeper issue of a poor movement diet• contains a three-level movement program to help those of all strengths and fitness levels transition to a movement-rich lifestyle
Move Your DNA contains corrective exercises, habit modifications, and simple lifestyle changes to free ourselves from the diseases of affluence and discover our naturally healthy, reflex-driven selves.
The "movement is not optional" argument is so convincing, this audiobook was designed to be listened to while walking - each chapter listing the mileage for that section. An average walker will complete 20 miles while listening!

Human Kinetics Explored & Motivation To Get Moving
Bowman is very upbeat in her narration and presents a new way to look at exercise and activity. The explanations of how movement effects our bodies down to the cellular level are fascinating. This book will change the way you think about the dynamics of health, strength and what is considered healthy exercise. Bowman is all about healing chronic physical issues using body mechanics, kinesiology and prescribed movement.
I had read some negative reviews for the recorded book because people found the "exercises" too complicated to understand without pictures. The verbal descriptions being too hard to follow. So I bought a used copy of the paperback book instead of buying the recorded version. Suffice it to say that the physical book just sat on the shelf--not being something that sparked my interest enough to really engage.
Then I went back and checked the reviews here again and found several positive comments about how motivating the audio recording was. So I bought the audible book too. Success! I find having the motivational quality of the author's reading and the physical book with the photos to be the perfect mix.
Be prepared to have everything you thought you knew about exercise and building a strong body turned upside down. Really worth the time. I would suggest starting with the recorded version first and seeing if you need the back up of a print version once you've listened. For me, having both versions has really worked. In hindsight, it might have been enough to have borrowed the print book from the library just until I got the images down and understood the visual concepts. Either way, a highly recommended listen.

Fascinating but also kind of depressing
STORY (health/science) - Consistent with all the interest in the paleo lifestyle, this book compares the movement, or lack thereof, of modern man to that of our ancestors. Ms. Bowman's theory is that our bodies have adapted to a culture of prolonged sitting and that, even when standing or walking, our posture and gait are affected. Further, our one-hour exercise sessions after a day of sitting do not begin to compare with the day-long wanderings of our ancestors and, thus, are grossly inefficient. She also states that though our heart pumps blood, it is basic movement that causes our tiniest capillaries to PULL blood and oxygen from the larger vessels, supplying vital oxygen to our cells and DNA. Thus, in order to supply all our cells, we need to move our body in a variety of ways throughout the day as much as possible.
I'm very glad I listened to the book and gained this information, but it's depressing to try so hard to get in a daily workout only to hear Ms. Bowman say it's nowhere near adequate.
She suggests many exercises that I don't think anyone could possibly do without diagrams of the positions, and it's boring to hear her describe them in such technical terms when you can't visualize what she's talking about. And there's a TON of exercises. You might prefer a printed version of this book.
PERFORMANCE - The author reads her own work and has a young, enthusiastic voice. She does a good job. She also includes recording bloopers at the end, which are fun to listen to.
OVERALL - Ms. Bowman's theory is interesting and makes good sense, but it's somewhat new and controversial. I'm glad I listened to the book and gained the general information, but I don't plan to buy the paper version or do the myriad of exercises.

This book is something I have been looking for a long time! Excellent
As a personal trainer and yoga instructor, I found this book to be helpful & likely useful to laymen as well. She has bloopers at the end that you might need to be in the mood for to listen to, but otherwise everything was good and I see myself listening to it again as well as giving it as a gift to select clients who I hope will be inspired to move their butts.
She goes into detail of different body parts with keen and insightful awareness that hopefully many will also appreciate as I did. It's important to use precise terms and I agree with much of what she writes.
I'm looking forward to her evolution and next book assuming she will continue her research and study.

It's not boring science!
Some of you probably don't find science boring, I know. But Katie Bowman has taken the biomechanics of how we live and move as opposed to how we are were meant to live and move and explains it all in a way that is not over my non-scientific head and therefore not boring. And it's important, people. She explains why we have so many physical limitations and aches and pains and she tells us ways we can improve things. Do-able ways. Read it. And don't forget the accompanying pdf download.

A Very Important Work
This book explains the science and practice of healthy alignment and movement and how to work towards it, offsetting the effects of our modern sedentary lifestyles and the changes they have effected on our bodies.
Katy Bowman gives careful consideration to how she communicates this information and is a truly great communicator. There are lots of photos and diagrams in the layout of the physical book and I bought this first. However because it is the sort of work I will keep revisiting as I deepen my understand and improve the way I move I was keen to listen to her read it too while out walking my dogs. There is a PDF available to accompany this audio book for folk who don't have the real book.
Listening to it made an enormous difference to my understanding of the principles and I recommend anyone to do it. This understanding has enabled me to improve my strength and energy as well as dramatically reduce muscle stiffness that I have been struggling with for at least fifteen years.

Loved it!
Katy is such a warm, lovely and engaging narator! She explains the science of movement in a way that everyone understands and also doesn't get you bored. I learned a lot and I look at movement and my posture in a totally different way now. I will try to implement as much as possible into my daily life, as I know I can make many improvements after listening to the audiobook. In short, I loved everything Katy had to say! Much love, Katy! Keep up the great work and positive vibes!

Brilliant delivery from a logical, scientific wealth of knowledge.
Everyone should listen to this, to understand who they are physiologically & how we can simply improve our overall health just by moving, even vaguely like we have evolved to as primates and mammals. KB delivers such comprehensive and up to date insight about the human body, with conversational ease.

Brilliant book, fun to listen author
This book sums up the last 15 years of coaching and athletic experience I have, explains beautifully the miskates I did so repeatedly during that time and the conclusions one can boil from them. If you want to be healthy or at least do your best on that direction - this is a must read book!

Life Changing
As someone who eats quite well but just can't get into the mindset of exercising, this book opened my eyes to the importance of movement (as opposed to "exercise").
The author gives fantastic analogies and examples and breaks things down to repeated "a-ha" moments.

Putting an interesting spin on how we move
Katy's well researched and very interesting approach to how we look after our bodies (or don't!) is outside the square, but makes perfect sense. This is a book everyone who has an interest in quality of life - and taking personal responsibility for it - should read. I loved it all.
