Story
“They’re going to kill me soon,” begins the note Amelia discovers in an antique hurdy-gurdy. From that moment on, the shy young woman finds herself doing all kinds of things she never thought possible. Between newfound intimacies and a risky journey into the past, Amelia comes to see herself in a whole new light. The scrawled note drives Amelia to find out what happened to the person who wrote it, identified only as “Hannah.” Who was Hannah? Was she really murdered? Amelia’s investigation leads her to dizzying new heights of romance and danger. Like a tightrope walker, she must not look down—especially when she finds herself in situations uncannily similar to those Hannah faced just before her murder. Like the Mrs. Pollifax mysteries for which Dorothy Gilman is famous, The Tightrope Walker features a spirited and unpretentious heroine and an intriguing mystery, enhanced by colorful settings and characters. Ruth Ann Phimister’s skillful narration adds a personal dimension, making you care about Amelia and the fascinating and dangerous people she meets.

Not As Good As The Others I Read
I found Book 10: "Mrs. Pollifax and the Second Thief" even too far fetched for a Mrs. Pollifax mystery to be truly entertaining.
Mrs. Emily Pollifax is sent to Italy in response to former CIA Farrell's SOS. There she finds John Sebastian Farrell wounded and needing to be kept out of sight. Her assigned Italian companion turns out to be a young woman of many talents as Emily soon learns while outrunning and out-maneuvering the string of cars following them.
There's a plethora of characters. Sometimes it's hard to keep their different roles in mind while mentally picturing what is happening and why. She and Farrell run into a former nemesis, a hired assassin Mrs. Pollifax had met in Africa on safari. Emily and Farrell were responsible for his imprisonment in France; where he should still be. "So, how could he be in Italy?"
Barbara Rosenblat gave a sterling performance, as usual. In my opinion she carried the story.
I love Mrs. Pollifax, but for those contemplating one of her stories, I would forgo this one.

Great series
Would you consider the audio edition of Mrs. Pollifax and the Second Thief to be better than the print version?
Absolutely loved this whole series. Narration was great except for the last book in the series. Loved the locations and the detailed description about the people, customs, and traditions. Mrs. Pollifax character was a delight and loved her. Listened to the series twice through I enjoyed it so much. The narrator was so good, I can't imagine that reading the books would have been nearly as enjoyable.

An old friend needs help desperately - so Mrs. P heads to Sicily. Then finds that there are quite a few people following her, and interested in her doings. An old adversary shows up, and then things really get interesting! Once again, laugh-out-loud moments are interspersed with touching moments, and nothing is ever just the way it seems. Mrs. Pollifax even gets to ride a bicycle! Excellent narration makes this adventure even better.

The Karate-Chopping Mrs Pollifax
If you are not a fan by now, you should start from the first book. And if you are, then I don’t need to tell you how much fun Mrs Pollifax’s adventures are. Suspend any skepticism about the plot, though this time at least she didn’t need to camp out for days, and the “roughing it” was more like a quaint B&B with only a generator and no connection to an electrical grid (the estate should be turned into something for ecotourism - we even hear about some of the food and it sounds wonderful). So, in some ways it is more credible than some of her other adventures. I love these books and am already beginning to mourn for the end of the series. I reduced the usually superb reading by Rosenblat by one star because this time I felt like she sometimes slipped with her different voices and accents. But that’s really so minor. I was never confused about who is speaking.
