It's men like Jimmy Coonan and Mickey Featherstone who gave Hell's Kitchen its name. In the mid-1970s, these two longtime friends take the reins of New York's Irish mob, using brute force to give it hitherto unthinkable power. Jimmy, a charismatic sociopath, is the leader. Mickey, whose memories of Vietnam torture him daily, is his enforcer. Together they make brutality their trademark, butchering bodies or hurling them out the window.

stop browsing and just get it.
I don't usually bother to write anything and just rate a book with stars but this true story reads like a novel, regardless of the complex story it tells. enjoyed it so much I felt like I had to put my two cents in.
regardless of the overused idiom "don't judge a book by its cover", when I purchased this book it didn't have cover art in the audible app. I kind of felt hesitant to buy it based on that fact alone (which is pretty ridiculous) but my hunger for a comprehensive story about 'the butcher of flatlands' overcame my trepidation about buying a book with no cover.
it's rare you find a true crime story involving so many murders, in which one of its heros is not a member of law enforcement, and is instead technically a well established career criminal. The central character in this book whose eyes we get to glimpse the story through is Dominic Montiglio, a decorated Vietnam veteran. The authors do a great job conveying the complexity of his situation, and we get the best look inside the DeMeo crew we'll probably ever get.
I feel like this story is often overlooked because of John Gotti's attention hungry attitude. The story of Dominic Montiglio, Nino Gaggi, Roy Demeo, and the Gemini Lounge is so much more interesting, violent, and complex, than the story of John Gotti stumbling his way through the Gambino family and into prison.

Get your mob on
Ok I read this book when it first came out & was thinking when's the movie version coming ? All these years later it finally made it to Audible but I'm guessing no movie . Looking back now there are some mistakes , Featherstone was not a Green Beret, & maybe you take some of it with a grain of salt, especially first hand accounts but hey it's a good tail of 70's & 80's NYC & how the mob ran things . Good narration , lots of characters and a few heroes . Overall a good summer listen .

One of the Best
I’ve loved this book for years and was so excited to see it on Audible. Jerry Capeci and Gene Mustain are masters at telling Gangland stories and do an especially outstanding job with Murder Machine. You think John Gotti was scary? Read/listen to this book and learn about the below-the-radar-frightening Roy DeMeo crew. The DeMeo story may not be as well-known as some others out there, but it should be! I highly recommend this book!

Great true crime stuff here. The narrator’s voice was perfect for the material and tone of the text. I had to take a couple of breaks because the detailed accounting of some frankly sordid lives was exhausting for me after a point, but I kept coming back. A very nicely done book and production.

I listened to a 15 hour book on Salt that was more interesting than this. I don't know if it's because there were so many names being thrown around or if it was the narrator but damn I was not paying attention.
