A Classic Mystery with Wonderful Characters
- By Robert on 12-22-08
By: Stieg Larsson, and others
Publisher's Summary
Number one New York Times best-selling author Christine Feehan reaches new heights of passion and suspense in this thrilling novel that takes listeners deep into the California backcountry, where a woman is tormented by visions of a killer.
It starts in her dreams. Hideous flashes from a nightmare only she can stop. Images of a murderer stalking the ones she cares about most....
Stella Harrison thought she got away from the traumas of her past. Running the Sunrise Lake resort high in the Sierra Nevada mountains has brought her peace, even though she doesn’t truly share her quiet life with anyone. Not even Sam, the hired handyman who notices everything and always seems to know exactly what she needs.
Stella doesn’t know anything about Sam’s past, but somehow over the last two years his slow, steady presence has slipped past her defenses. Still, she knows she can’t tell him about her recent premonitions. So far there’s been no murder. No body. No way to prove what’s about to happen without destroying the life she’s built for herself.
But a killer is out there. And Stella knows that this time she’ll do whatever it takes to stop him.

Boring...Fell asleep 6 times
Well, I guessed from the beginning who the serial killer was and basically what prompted tge killings to start. So really not much of a mystery.
Characters should have been interesting but too much describing instead of interactions between the characters made this a frequent snooze fest - like my headline says I fell asleep 6 times while listening to the book.
Usually my complaint with Christine Feehan is that she has too much sex (sometimes basically porn) and not enough story. This book has one tepid sex scene that I can vaguely recall - added to the boredom.
Would not recommend unless you drink 5 Red Bulls and an equal number of Mountain Dew to keep you awake while listening to this snooze fest.

I love you Christine but I don't love this book!
I love you Christine and have read absolutely everything you have written and loved most of it.
But this one, not so much.
Ummmm I hope this book is a 'try out suspense-thriller' written for practice because it's missing some basic elements that I look forward to in a murder mystery book. What I mean is, I hope Christine is trying out her talent for writing suspense-thrillers before she decides to get serious.
This book is like making love without reaching a climax; like taking that first lick of your favorite ice-cream before it falls off the cone. Disappointing!
You get what I'm saying? Over and over again a scene gains momentum but never reaches a peak before it's interrupted with some mundane information that ruins the moment. For example, the main character Stella is having an intense conversation about the next victims in these dreams she has and in the middle of this conversation Christine feels we need to know how tastefully dress the character is. Oh and in another scene, Stella has dived into the freezing lake to save her friend from being killed by this serial killer and when they finally sit-down to talk about the event Christine feels that this is a good time to stress how much Stella likes coffee. Time after time, we enter a scene that has our heart racing then we are let down when the scene is changed into some mundane subject that doesn't matter.
Authors who write thrillers successfully have you panting with anticipation, have you sitting on the edge of you seat, get your heart racing with anxiety and fear. Murder at Sunrise Lake does not evoke any of those feelings. Instead when the pace picks up and the plot thickens, we are drawn into a trivial sidestep that is not important to the plot.
Lets talk about the romance. I would never have believed that Christine could have written such a boring, tepid romance. Well, she certainly has satisfied readers who always complain that the love scenes are pornographic because the romance between Stella and Sam is boring enough to be rated for young adults. They did express strong affection for each other and I believe there was a love scene with approximately maybe 50 words but I may have missed it because it was not memorable. No passion at all. Not Christine's style. Nancy Drew maybe but not Christine. Even though this is a new genre, she should not change her style of expressing passion between the characters.
Halfway through the book I just wanted to finish it and was tempted to start skipping pages but instead I gritted my teeth and listened to every word until the story was done.
The book has a great plot and I do like the characters. Stella and Sam are great and their friends are very interesting. I'm sure there are plans for books about them. I hope Christine is open to criticism and writes a better book next time. I am returning this one to audible.

I love this book!!!
This is a great storyline. A little combination feel of her other series but totally a great stand alone book on it’s own! I fully enjoyed it and look forward to many more! BRAVO Ms. Feehan!! Also, I want to take my hat off to the narrator, she is phenomenal! She is one of my favorite narrators for Ms. Feehan books! Perfect! The only thing that would put a twist on this narration would be to have a male and female narrator for the characters.

Marvelous Mountain Murder Mystery
Outstanding murder mystery full of complex characters. Loved the secluded setting being a community of close individuals each harboring secrets of their own. The additional international background for some of the women adds a flair to the friends dynamic. This is definitely worth reading or listening to the wonderful narration.

Slow narrator
This story moves slower than any Christine Feehan book I’ve read. And I’ve read them all. The story itself is very good. The narration just killed it. The narrator was slow, almost plodding. It was difficult to know which character was speaking because most of them sound alike. The variation of tone was inconsistent with no variation in speed inflection. Nothing conveyed the affect of the characters. I’d like to try it again with a different narrator. One of this author’s strengths is her portrayal of strong female characters. They exist in this story but it’s very hard to connect with characters when the narration makes them flat, dull and indistinguishable.

Really Good
This story is about Stella Harrison who has the unique ability to see images of what a serial killer is about to do. As the story unfolds she begins a romance with Sam Rossi, a man with unique gifts of his own and who has had his eye on Stella for the last two years. We learn a lot about both of them and the close circle of friends they have as the terrible story of a serial killer evolves. Much to my surprise I worked out who the killer was by chapter 13 although I couldn’t quite believe it. I found the story quite enthralling, it leaves you not quite sure which way it will go next. An interesting path for the queen of erotic paranormal stories to take, although somewhat selfishly I wished there was some of that in this novel and she really knows how to write about it. All in all a very good murder mystery novel though and I highly recommend it.
