Publisher's Summary

Libby Forest is hot on the trail of the killer when disaster strikes closer to home.

The sudden death of an elderly volunteer at Dunster Castle rocks the Castle’s ancient calm to its core, leaving members of the local History Society devastated. When the finger is pointed at a fellow volunteer, his wife, Margery, fears her husband of 40 years may be the killer.

Libby Forest, in partnership with Max Ramshore and their two much-loved dogs, Bear and Shipley, is determined to find the castle killer - no matter who it may be.

Quirky characters, dogs, cake and gossip abound in this Exham on Sea Murder Mystery, set in a charming English seaside town of Exham on Sea - an audiobook for listeners who love Agatha Christie-style murder mysteries, cosy crime, dogs, cake and chocolate.

Delightful!

I loved it as it is old fashioned like an Agatha Christie. No nastiness with blood, gore and sex. It still has clues and ordinary people in it rather than psychopaths and wired goings on. Looking forward to reading some more from this author.

Giving up partway through - just can't get into it at all. Maybe if I'd started at thd beginning of thd series, though I doubt it.

Unoriginal negative stereotypes

I was hoping for better because I listened to two other audiobooks from the same author and they seemed fine, if unexceptional. Sadly, the solution to the crimes in this one hinged on a hackneyed stereotype that cross-dressers are unbalanced shame-monsters who will go to any lengths to disguise their hideous secret. What a disappointment.

Excellent book

The story was really very good. I enjoyed the characters immensely. It was interesting that a book could be that good and no one was using bad language. Charlotte Strevens did a fantastic job on narration. All around a very good experience.

Dull

Not sure how this weak storyline with little or no tension could get a full production. nicelynreqd, though.

Shame

Ugh. Surely these types of storylines can retire themselves?? Cliche. Motive right out of 1950s. Well-read but poor material to work with.

Dogs to the Rescue

Congenial easy to listen to mystery where everything tied together in a happy ending for all.

This was my first time reading this author. It

took a while for me to get into the story but once I did it really took off. I think that I will read one more to see how that story develops. The tale ending was a surprise but not one that was easy to figure out.

The beauty and charm of Somerset.

What a wonderful mystery! After several somewhat disappointing books, reading "Murder at the Castle" felt like such a treat. The author writes so beautifully, and with such ease, I enjoyed every word of this novel. The best element of the book, however, is the excellent character creation and development. The author doesn't need long paragraphs of minute descriptions; she captures the essence of each character masterfully in little gestures or quick internal monologues.
"Murder at the Castle" is a sharp and fun mystery but written with such gentle touch (that I miss in many crime/mystery novels). The beauty and charm of Somerset shine through and bring the story even more alive.
I can't recommend this book enough - beautifully written, entertaining, and simply wonderful!

Monotonous narration

Quite a good story, but spoiled the the narrator.Read in one tone, never varied for different characters.

Abridged version

Definitely should be clearer that this is an bridged version. There are a number of massive leaps and repetitions in the writing that must be down to editing as otherwise I can’t understand the generally glowing reviews.
Perfectly enjoyable as it’s free, but making the abridged nature of this more obvious would set expectations.

Transphobic ending

Up until the last part of the book I was really enjoying it but then it turned around and became rather transphobic. Was not expecting it and is a great shame. Very disappointed.

Undemanding Cozy Crime

Easy read with a certain charm. The narration slips down easily too. There are few suspenseful moments, and nearly everyone likes each other. Even the murders are done with regret.

Good company.

I really enjoyed this cosy murder mystery. Like a catch up with an old friend it was easy listening with good conversations between what felt like familiar characters from an Agatha Christe novel.
I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Loved it!!!!!

Beautifully read. An intriguing murder story. It encompasses you in the layed back rural country life, which gives it a slight vintage feel, but still encapsulates modern day occurrences. Really enjoyed.
