Publisher's Summary

Egypt, 1926. Fiercely independent American Jane Wunderly has made up her mind: she won't be swept off her feet on a trip abroad. Despite her Aunt Millie's best efforts at meddling with her love life, the young widow would rather gaze at the Great Pyramids of Giza than into the eyes of a dashing stranger. Yet Jane's plans to remain cool and indifferent become ancient history in the company of Mr. Redvers, a roguish banker she can't quite figure out....

While the Mena House has its share of charming guests, Anna Stainton isn't one of them. The beautiful socialite makes it clear that she won't share the spotlight with anyone - especially Jane. But Jane soon becomes the center of attention when she's the one standing over her unintentional rival's dead body.

Now, with her innocence at stake in a foreign country, Jane must determine who can be trusted, and who had motive to commit a brutal murder. Between Aunt Millie's unusual new acquaintances, a smarmy playboy with an off-putting smile, and the enigmatic Mr. Redvers, someone has too many secrets. Can Jane excavate the horrible truth before her future falls to ruin in Cairo...and the body count rises like the desert heat?

Not what I was hoping

I love period stories, this one sounded good but I figured out who did it even falling asleep through half. The narrator is good, perhaps the best part. The worst is how horribly inaccurate it was. They did not use the word phoned, nor did a place like Cario have so many! Nor did any American or Brit know what a sports car convertible was!!! If the author bothered to look it up, any and all cars were able to remove tops. The only cars of that didn’t were the cheep Ford ones. So while she throws in misplaced phases of the time with not detailed color and fashion, it might has well been modern. If you want better try the Ginger Gold stories which are similar, or the Heathcliff Lennox books

The odd, sing songs narrative ruined the book enough that I could not listen

I have no idea whether the story, plot etc were good so gave them three stars. I simply could not listen to the actor any longer. Weird almost Siri like cadence. I think it was suppose to have a Nick and Nora like delivery...but it didn’t.

Double trouble

Loved how there was more than 1 plot working in this book. Very enjoyable book. Hoping for more books with the Characters

Awful Reader-No Agatha Christie

The reader kept the same tone throughout the book never changing even when someone died or was in danger. The setting was perfect but the author fell well short for an interesting read. I finished the book only because I started it.

Couldn't finish

I might have finished the book, but I found the narrator too annoying. Her sentences have a repetitive cadance usually ending slightly higher with the the last word in the sentence, almost sing-song sounding. The exception is when she does the voices of characters other than her own. In this book, she sounds much older than her character, making it hard to see the character as written. Other than that, the plot and characters just didn't intrique me enough to stick it out.

I loved it, all the rich details, descriptions, excitement, suspense, & romance. Will definitely listen again.
