Publisher's Summary

A little music, a little dancing, a little murder at the spring ball.

England, 1925. After years shut away from the world, former detective Lord Edgington of Cranley Hall plans a grand ball to celebrate his 75th birthday. But when someone starts bumping off members of his scheming family, the old man enlists his teenage grandson to help find the killer before one of them is next.

The mismatched duo must pick the culprit from a gaggle of preening playboys, scatter-brained spinsters, and irate inspectors in this Agatha-Christie-style whodunnit that will have you racing to spot the killer. With a cast of eccentric suspects (both upstairs and down) and an adorable golden retriever along for the ride, Murder at the Spring Ball is a warm-hearted murder mystery full of intrigue, humor, and adventure.

Narrated by George Blagden from the TV shows Vikings and Versailles and the Oscar-winning film Les Miserables.

Fantastic read!

You will totally fall in love with this book. As soon As I finished it, I turned around to listen to it all over again. The characters are delightful, and the writing is truly descriptive enough to visualize the story with all of its elements. I loved the narration, too. This book was everything I was looking for. I can't wait until the next book out by this author.

Not that great

I don't understand all the stellar reviews for this title. It's not terrible, but it's certainly not fantastic. The main character is incredibly stupid throughout the whole thing, making obvious blunder after blunder and the "humor" is all based on him being publicly embarrassed because of these mistakes (which doesn't then stop him from making the next obvious one). It made me cringe throughout, though I kept listening in hopes it would get better. It didn't.

What a Ball

The story started a little slow, but quickly changed pace. Many suspects and twist. Nice to see a grandfather interacting so well with his grandson, made it a truly fun read.

Superb writing and exquisite narrating!

I guessed the killer and Christopher convinced me I was wrong. When the audible version was published I decided to listen to the story for whatever clues I missed the first go around. The narrating blew me away! How can one person so perfectly be the voice of every character in the book?! I am so looking forward to the audible version of all the Lord Edgington books! They are perfect!!

Narrator was great, story moved along, lots of plot twists, the duo solving the mystery a bit different than other crime solvers

Very Enjoyable

Different , engaging and clever . That’s my verdict anyway . Not as predictable as I thought it would be and I hadn’t guessed the villain .
Characters interesting , twists plenty and humour too !
Looking forward to next instalment .

I am ready for the next book. The characters are rich and varied. A good story line. Great to read on a winter's day by a cosy fire.

Really well put together!

I have a confession:

I started reading a Christmas story of Lord E, and didn’t like it - I gave up after chapter 14 (I think). It was said that one need not have pre-read any of the series to enjoy the Christmas tale, but that turned out to be untrue. Now that I have read (& heartily enjoyed), this tale and discovered the personalities, I shall revisit that book. But…

I may actually wait until it comes out as an audiobook. I truly believe that 90% of my enjoyment of this book is the superb narration by George Blagden! The characters absolutely come to life under his skill and Great Aunt Clementine’s awful singing could not have been bettered! His narration made a lot more of the text than I believe my imagination would have done. Lord E has more vigour in him, than I bestowed on him in the Christmas tale.

The story was also engaging and enjoyable. With a good amount of credible alibis and no red herrings! There weren’t any characters whom one would immediately dislike (not really), of the kind who grate on one…

This was a thoroughly enjoyable book and I do hope that the next one is released very soon - followed immediately by the next.
